  • Hey Friends,

I am facing a small issue with my rtr 160 (not FI). My bike was almost unused for about 2 years as I was out of country and as you can imagine it was in a terrible condition when I picked it up. The first thing I did was give it a pretty good servicing. Changed engine oil (Motul 300V), Adjusted clutch cable, changed oil filter, air filter, break pads scraping and break oil change the lot... After servicing I had checked idle rpms at 1100 which is what it should be. I had been driving it tame for a few days post the servicing and faced no problems, engine purred beautifully, gear shifts became smooth all was well. Today I let loose on the highway and my bike started acting funny -
    1. Idle rpms now vary from 1400 to 2000
    2. 0-60 kmph is blistering fast, faster than I remember it ever went (Maybe in around 3 secs - Not complaining about it one bit). But it has a very hard time going over 70 and reaches a max of 80 odd kmph. Previously my bike could go over 110 kmph.
    3. She just wont rev over 8000 rpm. And this has me puzzled.

Have any of you come across similar problems before. Could this be an issue with the carburettor? Could cleaning the carburettor solve these issues? What has me baffled is incredibly fast 0-60 pickup and really laboured 70 - 80+ pull.
Will I need to get the compression pressure checked at a svc for correcting the rev limit hitting at 8K? This is the one thing I cant do on my own. If you guys know how to, please let me know.

Any suggestions, any more ideas or gut feelings are very welcome. Am really worried about my bike.

    Regards,
    Amit

The tuning is not done perfectly. Those issues will pop out when you have travelled for long distance or your engine has got heated up due to high revving.
Normally SVC guys tamper the tuning stuff. Every time I give for servicing they screw it. Idealy tuning should be done once the engine reached optimum temperature.
But SVC guys are too carless or lazy or time stricken that they dont do it @ the right time.
Secondly clean your air filter & carburettor.
Also check if any issue in TPS & carburetor diaphragm.
Once all this is solved everything is fine.

        Hi Susheel,

Thanks a million for your suggestions man. Btw, It was I who serviced my bike. And I had made sure that the bike was run for 3-4 kms before setting the idle to 1100 -1200 rpm. Air filter had been cleaned. Will clean the carburetor today, but have least idea what I would do if the diaphragm is cracked. Is there a cheap fix you know of? And also another question, how do I check the TPS (Its throttle position sensor, right?). Thanks again for your inputs.

        Regards,
        Amit

Sounds like issue with diaphragm, it may have hardened/cracked or might have a pin hole.
if it has a pin hole, you can patch it but its a temp fix.
Get the diaphragm checked/changed. Costs around 650/-

            • Apache RTR 160 problems. Please help me out!

Hey experts i have some problems with my Apache RTR 160 Hyper Edge.
              Model : June 2012.
              Kms done : 5900kms.
Last service done : December 2012.
              The following are my problems,

1.When i am at a speed of 60kmph,and when the hands are off from the handle bars,it starts wobbling(problem persist from a month).
And when i am at the speed of below and above 60kmph,this problem doesn't exist. Its only at 60kmph.

2.The front fork sounds "tak" when it goes on a pathole or humps. Its annoying me a lot.

3.There is a ticking sound in the spark plug(Don't know exactly from where the sound comes from). But its around the spark plug only.

4.There is a cheeing sound both in front disc and rear drum breaks when i take the bike in reverse.

So the experts over here please help me solve the problems.

              Thank You.

              • Wobbling problem in my Apache RTR160

                Hello everyone,

My bike has some serious problem I guess, wobbling at 45-65kmph eventually it decreases. I went to a local mechanic. He had changed the cone set and then fork oil. Still no improvement. So he asked me to change the tyres. And I had changed the tyres as well as tubes(both front and rear). Still problem exists. So I rushed into TVS service center and I requested them to change the wheel set from another bike. And they did it for front wheel alone. Now they are saying the problem is with RIM.
But I don't feel the RIM is bad.

What could be the problem? Please help me out guys/experts!!

                Thanks in Advance!!!

POst your query in apache 180 thread as that is more active & have members having newer version of apache..
Engine-wise there is no much difference between old & new apache..
Test ride one before you make a decision..

Wobbling issue can occur due to improper tire pressure & if wheel balancing is not correct...regarding tak sound while going on potholes check if the chain is loose & also the forks..

Check your wheel balancing by going to some SVC..
Opt for some other SVC...Tell them the issue & they will rectify the same.

FI models are stopped. Only carb versions are available right now.
                        Your Hyperedge is carbed one..
I'm also using the same model..
Till first servicing never increase your speed above 60..Also dont ride in constant speed for long..city riding will be the best for better run-in...
Mileage depends how sanely you drive the bike...If you keep within 5k rpm & no fast fast accelerations you will get better mileage..

I'm not sure what exactly is that ticking sound in spark plug.
When do you notice this sound exactly?
I hope you are not talking about the tick sound you hear after turning of the engine & parking it after a ride.
The cheeking sound from disc brakes are common if there are dirt particles between the disc pads.
It can be resolved by flushing water with force on to disc pads.

Does this noise increase after you ride 10-15 km compared to colder engine? Does the frequency of noise increase as you rev it up?
