I see Dovi really well this year, his speed and consistency on the new Duc might pay dividends in the end especially if MM93 and VR46 at the front push each other into mistakes.
Crutchlow had such a sudden boost in performance recently -- I think after Pedrosa'a problems Honda quietly gave him the real factory kit. They could not put him on Pedrosa'a bike because of sponsors incompatibility (Cal is a Monster rider, HRC is Red Bull), but they can give LCR the good parts for him. I'm convinced he's riding a full spec factory bike now.
Smith is doing well. His Yamaha is last year's model I believe, which means it doesn't have the seamless gearbox yet. But that's only part of the reason why he can't keep Rossi's (or Lorenzo's) pace for the entire race: all those MotoGP riders can be fast for one lap, or a few laps, with a good bike; but managing the entire race is where the rider's talent and experience and also the skill of his team and crew chief come into full play. So many things to tune, and everything got to be near perfect to keep a fast pace until the last lap of the race and end on the podium. As you rightly say it takes also a lot of mental concentration. And stamina, because to be a real contender one has to repeat the same process almost perfectly, for most of 18 weekends aroun d the world...
Thinking that Rossi is in his 20th year of this circus and still going strong, is what really amazes me about that guy.
