Our Public Distribution System (PDS) is inefficient at best. Isn't PDS what triggered Mr. Rajiv Gandhi's statement of only 1p reaching for every Rs.100 or something to that effect?Originally posted by rakowli View PostI think fuel should be sold like a ration to everybody, say like 50litres a month for about 40rs/lit for everybody, after that next 25-30litres for about 50rs/litre and after that directly to 80rs./litre. Most of us would not be using more that 100 litres in a month, This would allow us to control our travel and also make our travel arrangements as per our necessity.
This way a common man can get the benefit of subsidy and rich person pays the premium. i know there will be loop holes in this also, but atleast a common man or lets say in govt's words the vote bank would benefit.
Other thing for car owners, would be they would think of Car pooling for dividing the fuel expenses, which would make less traffic on roads and again better riding or driving conditions. This way even Govt. would be happy and even people would be satisfied. Maybe the oil companies will have to bear some losses at the start but will start making profits in long term.
Think over it, it not only to blame the Govt. maybe we can give them some ideas to control this.
This is majorly for private car or bike owners, but for public transport or lorries we can have some different policy similar to this.
Besides, Petrol is not viewed as mango man's commodity, which is why you see this enthusiasm from Govt to raise petrol prices and tax it mercilessly.
And who is getting subsidy? I see this opinion floating around in newspapers and online forums. I just don't get it
The basic price of petrol even today is ~Rs.40. It is taxed to death!
Free up the fuel pricing, tax it reasonably, disinvest in Oil PSUs and let badami, kharjur and such other aadmis also live alongside mango man!A lone amateur built the ark. A large group of professionals built the Titanic...

Why not introduce a tax on the basis of type and cost of vehicle? Carbon tax is already there in Europe. Collect tax from people who ride/drive sports/luxury vehicles and use that money to subsidize the fuel.Originally posted by liionheart View Post....can not it be like fuel prices related to vehicle owned or Like different price for different vehicle...

PLEASE FOE THE LOVE OF GOD NO MORE TAXES!!!Originally posted by ksameer View PostWhy not introduce a tax on the basis of type and cost of vehicle? Carbon tax is already there in Europe. Collect tax from people who ride/drive sports/luxury vehicles and use that money to subsidize the fuel.
Jokes apart i feel whatever steps have been taken by the govt. is reducing the overall purchasing power of the indian population thus leading to a major meltdown of the system. we are already slowly but steadily getting burdened by hike on taxes on everything. Indian taxation system is not uniform. Everyone is charged differently. The way i see it is more or less encouraging people to resort to containing more black money than white..
I guess the current regime has realised that with the no. of scams that have taken place, they will not last longer so grab all you can while you can and make sure that the new team in the coming years has nothing but problems lined up for them and push us to middle ages.
coming back to fuel hike... indeed it is something that will pinch us all hard especially for a middle class family where every drop of fuel for commute makes a difference. if it has touched 80... 100 is not far behind!

FYI, crude oil price as of today $90.79/gallon (source: CRUDE OIL PRICE: Oil | Energy | Petroleum | Oil Price | Crude Oil Charts | Oil Price Forecast) compaed to ~$120/gl during the last hikeOriginally posted by vipin_s View PostEducated people should understand that
1. Govt is run by taxes
2. Poor are taken care by taxes
3. Infra is built on taxes.
4. Petrol is DE-regulated, majority have passed bill in parliament classifying petrol as de-regulated commodity.
5. Govt. did not increase petrol price, but PSU did it else they may have to shut down, b'cos they cannot procure oil for India, b'cos of high crude price and stronger dollar and impending Euro crisis.
So at least educated should stop ranting about petrol hike, we will use our bikes even if it is Rs.200/litre, so far no one has abandoned their bikes b'cos of petrol hike, so let's stand by our nation's decision.karizmatic

Well carbon fibre would be overkill......but chro-moly steel construction, though the costs will still be higher, might probably be worth it in the long run due to weight savings and higher durability.Originally posted by rx100.7050 View Postyes... lighter vehicle. An alternative to Carbon fibre (much lighter than metal but hell expensive)

This is complete rubbish. Its all already planned, to shut everyones mouth. First hike it by 7.5rs then reduce it by 1.5rs to show how good the govt. is.

Petrol could cost Rs 15 less if Delhi follows Goa's lead
Finance minister Pranab Mukherjee said as much in Parliament on Tuesday. "Price without tax - I am taking Delhi city - per litre of petrol price would be Rs 39, diesel would be Rs 33.51, kerosene would be Rs 14.12. For kerosene, there is hardly any tax. The Central government does not have any tax. Some states have some tax, that is 4.8%; but Centre has no tax. If the excise duty, customs duty and state VAT taken together, it comes to Rs 26.55," he said while replying in the debate on the Finance Bill.
State governments levy VAT on petrol ranging from 15% in Puducherry to 33% in Andhra Pradesh, making it a major source of income.Got a $5 head? Get a $5 helmet.

I will not be replying on your other points as its just a rant.Originally posted by Nithesh View Post4) If Petrol is deregulated, how on God's earth are we paying 21 bucks more per litre than what Pakistan is paying for the same fuel?
Remember there are more vehicles in India than people in the neighboring countries.
5) Have you ever wondered, that if Oil companies are suffering from losses how on god's earth would they be functioning all this while?
They say govt increasing fuel prices does very little to no difference to their losses in hundreds to thousands of crores.
And you still believe that?
Regarding #4: While the petrol in pakistan is currently cheaper by 13 Rs compared to the latest price in Delhi (which corroborates your data more or less if your reference point is bangalore), the price of diesel in pakistan is a whopping 64Rs - i think 21 Rs more than Delhi (I wont dwell on the consequences of such a hike in diesel prices in India)
The price of LPG in Pakistan for a 11.8 kg cylinder is 875 Rs.
The price in India for a 14.x kg cylinder is 450 approx naa..(I might be off by a few rupees and grams
)
The price of kerosene in pakistan is 59.xx Rs(Data of 29 feb - could be more or less now - this i got from another site) while in India its 14.xx (i hope across the country) - again i won't dwell on such a steep increase in kerosene prices in India and what it would do to the poor.
All this data is from official sources and not some stupid fb or blog link.
Welcome to Pakistan State Oil
Prices adjusted to INR. I am not quoting PKR
Regarding #5: Go over the balances sheets of these petrol companies. For example - iocl. Check three columns of special interest. The profit the company is making(Yes they declare a profit to keep stakeholders happy), the grant govt of India is giving and the subsidy the govt of India is giving.
You will get this data on iocl.com Please don't form your opinion from the fb forward going around which conveniently deleted the grant + subsidy columns while showing the balance sheet. The number of "educated" people who liked that photo is amazing
-- I have been dealing with data (real data -- not some fb image which i would take as gospel of truth :P ) so kindly don't brand me a congressi, pro hike.. pro italy -- whatever -- keep that mudslinging going if you think that the forum is for that only.
Also, if my Indian data for kerosene and LPG is off by a few rupees, kindly ignore.Last edited by Mik; 05-25-2012, 09:02 AM.
