  • 5% Ethanol to be mixed in petrol from December

New Delhi: Mandatory mixing of five percent ethanol in petrol will be implemented across the country from next month, Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs decided Thursday, a step which will help the country save around 100 crore litres of fuel every year.

In 2009, the CCEA had decided to mix five percent ethanol in petrol but it could not be implemented due to opposition by some sections in the chemical and petroleum sectors.

"The five percent mandatory ethanol blending with petrol should be implemented across the country, for which the Petroleum Ministry will issue a gazette notification in a next few days, for oil companies to implement from 2012-13 sugar season, effective from December 1, 2012," an official release said.

"The CCEA also decided that the price of bio-ethanol, to be mixed with petrol, would be decided by oil-marketing companies and its suppliers," it said.

The ethanol-blending programme is presently being implemented in a total of 13 states with blending level of about two percent against a mandatory target of 5 percent.

In the backdrop of reservations against the proposal that domestic suppliers would not be able to meet the supply requirements, the government has also allowed import of ethanol in case of shortfalls.

The proposal moved by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy is expected to help the country in cutting down the oil bill for 100 crore litres of petrol and also help in reducing carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide emissions by around 15 percent.

Ethanol is a by-product of sugarcane.

States such as Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra are the largest producers and can be developed as major suppliers of it, officials said.

just read that bioethanol has a rating of 105 octane!!! would that mean that we can get more performance from our engines by increasing compression if using bioethanol?

This article might help understand the risks associated.

            Yorkshire MAG - Ethanol Campaign

According to the article, there is not much issue as long as it is a 5% blend(Also known as E5). But if it is increased to a 10% Ethanol blend (Also known as E10), it will have major issues associated with its usage in non E10 compliant vehicles.

5% ethanol is not going make any difference in the way engines are performing. The whole thing is based on the concept 'renewable' energy. Quite frankly it is whole load of **it. The benefits of adding ethanol to fuel are highly debated and controversial. The statement claims that 100 crore liters of petrol will be saved due to adding of 5% ethanol. What is not being factored into the equation is the land that needs to be cultivated (deforestation), the irrigation (strain on water resources that are already becoming scarce) and the energy required (there are load shedding problems across the country due inadequate power generation) to produce, convert and create ethanol.

The ethanol is going to come from sugarcane, one of the most notoriously natural resource hungry plant/grass. The demand ethanol will fuel demand for more agricultural land, fresh water, and energy. All of which are going to be a huge challenges for the country in the coming decades as we struggle to provide for more than a billion people.

A bad idea that has become a monster that most people are not even willing to question. Only ones who are going benefit are the sugar lobby.

is the govt. in their right senses serious about this?? E5 means the end consumer vehicle life would be reduced to half. A Very bad news for bullet and vintage bike owners, this blending ain't at all compatible with metal and expect heavy corrosion! Ethanol mixed fuel deposits lot of trash and one can expect very frequent blockages.

In short, Indian biking scene ki toh abb lag gayi! (Its a very bad news for the Indian Biking scene )

                    EDIT:

Well this also means, we can expect a reduced petrol E5 costs.

and after a few years ethanol cost will increase to the point where it will not be economical anymore.

and btw, who will benefit in all this, petrol companies & sugar mill owners, what is the benefit to nation or mango man..??

                        petrol cost will be lowered...???

Some manufacturers say their cars are ready for E5, Honda even says E10, but bike manufacturers dont mention it.Will motorcycles tolerate ethyl alcohol?

My question is whether this rule to mix 5% ethanol is applicable to all Petroleum industries in India or just those that are subsidised by the government. More specifically, I would like to know whether Shell will also be forced to use this blend. I usually fill up with Shell Unleaded and I don't think they blend Ethanol as their petrol helps prevent corrosion. Using ethanol would actually cause corrosion instead of preventing it.
