Ethanol is nothing but Ethyl Alcohol (C2H5OH). Some classic examples of Ethanol are Vodka, Whiskey, Tequilla etc!
Well ethanol has a higher octane reading than petrol and adding even a littile amount of it in petrol increases it's octane reading. But there's a major catch. The calorific value of alcohol is very less when compared to petrol i.e around 1/3rd of that of petrol. Petrol has CV of 43120KJ/Kg so alcohol has around 14373.33KJ/kg. Calorific value means nothing but the amount of heat generated when the fuel is burnt. More heat means more work and more power. So adding alcohol to petrol can decrease its calorofic value, which means lesser power. However, thats only applicable if the mix contains alcohol of 10% or more. 5%, I don't think, will make much of a difference!

But if the Ethanol blend is E5 or more, and its used for engines that are not meant to be used with such fuels, it will affect the fuelling parts and engine. It causes corrosion. In cars some specify that their engines can use upto E10 petrol, but we don't have any such specification in bikes. Anyway, an E0 gasoline will provide much longer life to the engine than an E5 or E10.Originally posted by tusharsmoily View PostEthanol is nothing but Ethyl Alcohol (C2H5OH). Ethanol is also used as anti-knocking agent added to gasoline.
So, that means they will no longer use Tetra-ethyl lead or what??

i am no expert to comment but we all should look at brazil's ethanol program which has been running from past 37 years and the mix percentage in petrol is as high as 25%
however for our vehicles is it compliant or not we must contact our vehicle manufacturers directly
PS. i just happened to recollect tha when i read my honda activa's manual it said it can tolerate alcohol in petrol...the only requirement was it should match the octane rating of 87 or higher...so i do not think it will be that bad for us motorcyclists but if storing the bike for a long period it would be wise to empty the fuel from the carb and probably disconnect the fuel lines so it doesnt damage rubber parts....experts can share more lightPulsar 200NS parts list
