I went to the showroom in Malad and checked the the dates on the R1's. The blue one had '07 on it and the black one had '06 on one rim and '07 on the other! I brought this to the notice of the service manager there and he didn't have an answer.

I went again a few weeks after that and there was a blue R1 going through PDI and that one also was an '07.

I didn't check the MT as its not my type. I'll do that next time.

Grey market dealers will say anything to sell their bikes. When the Yamaha's were just launched, a dealer in Bangalore told me that these R1's don't go above 180km/h because they are restricted! lol.

What's the difference between the 07 and the 08 R1?!

      Two things:

      1) If the model year on your RC Book says 2008, it's an 08. The manufacture year can be 07 for all I care. This is purely for resale and depreciation purposes.
FYI, Mine was manufactured in Sept 2007 according to the stamping on the chassis.

      2) There is no mechanical or functional difference between the 07 and 08 R1 world over. The colour schemes change according to the region, and we are getting the Aussie spec. It really doesn't make an difference at all.

Grey market dealers have been undermining the official CBUs saying all kinds of things. Unfortunately, people who don't know about the model year carry over changes, get taken in and fall prey to such stuff. I know of two people who later came to know just this, who would have otherwise bought the offical R1 and MT.

@Bladerunner: You saw the date/year of manufacture on the rims or on the chassis?

Holy Buffalo, the Rossiter thread is back in a an all new incarnation! It is different this time around, but it is nice nonetheless, with pictures taking a hot spot at the beginning and soon there will be numerous upgrades to this thread.

I think that there is the gold scheme in the 08 that differs it from the 07! Else, mechanically and electronically, they are the same thing, other than for depreciation purposes as cited by Rossiter.

The year of manufacture on the Registration book/papers is the one to go by for resale purposes. The stamping on the rims or other parts has no bearing on the year of manufacture of the bike. On the assembly line parts are picked up from a bin and thrown on; there may be older rims or levers or other stuff in there which doesn't matter.

I have got this info from one of the largest & best car manufacturers directly.

And thanks for your wishes and kind comments everyone. It feels good to have this thread back up. As Sunny said, unfortunate things have happened, but the important thing is we're rebuilding it piece by piece

Jodhpur was fine, thanks. No, I did not ride down. I was there on work. I do not always ride down you see !!! Right now I am at Gajner Palace, 33kms west of Bikaner.

Just asked you a question regarding warranties on the MT01 thread! Maybe you could answer it here and there as well. Thanks again.

Wont the company be shortchanging us if they sell 07 manufactured R1s? They will definitely get more bucks for an older machine selling them in India because most of the buyers here are illiterates when it comes to checking the manufacturing dates. AFAIK if you sell a 07 manufactured R1 late in 2008 then it will be sold at a discounted price. If this is indeed true then the Yamaha in India lacks serious moral values or they should sell it at a discounted price.

True Sunny. You made a very good point. This practice is prevalent in the West where older bikes are sold for a discount. But again, it's left to Yamaha what to do here.

PS: Did you check the Castrol Xbhp R1's manufacture dates? Just out of curiosity

They're usually dealer discounts, I don't think manufacturers offer these discounts themselves. The excess stock bought by the dealer is sold off at discounted prices.

Does not make business sense. Abroad, you can check out, prices drop by 1K to 2K US$ for year old products.

Rossiter: I saw the dates on the hoses and the rims. I'm pretty sure it will be '07 on the chassis as well.

I know there is no technical difference in the 2 years, but what it means is that they are selling the leftovers from '07.

If you were a buyer, if an '06 bike was registered in '08, would you pay the the same price even if they were technically the same. I don't think so.

Streetfighter: It could be the case with cars, but with bikes, no. A dealer of Kawasaki, Honda & Suzuki in the US is a good friend of mine and he has told me that the date on the rims & chassis is what you should go with. The hose could be a month or two older.

Actually, what SF says is true. The dealer usually discounts the excess stock to that level.

If it were 06, I'd think a lot. I do agree with what you say man. Sunny made a similar point. We cannot do much but leave it to the policies of the company. The company is quite clear that they won't offer any discounts as of now, and the dealer discount is well, up to the dealer.

In the case of an R1, if they'd be trying to sell the 06 R1 in 08 without a discount, I very much doubt it if anyone would buy it. But when parts like rims and hoses are older than the bike, then it's a bit more complex. Wouldn't buy it probably.
