  • Premix for Less Smoke in a Yam 135

    Hi Guys,
I just recently got my hands on a Yamaha rx 135(After a long long wait and a lot of convincing.....). Everything s fine with the bike except that i can see a lot of smoke from the emission. I got the engine oil changed just a few days back. I used 40ml oil for a litre of petrol. There was no difference. After reading a lot through this forum, i got to know about reducing the oil mix. So then i started using 20ml oil with a litre of petrol.... Still i dont see the smoke reducing... Any ideas on how to bring down the smoke... The main problem for me is in signals where i leave the bike idling and a lot of smoke comin out...

Also im new to two strokers, so pls bear with my questions

Raghu, first welcome to xBhp & consider posting about yourself & your ride in the "Who Are You" section.

Ideally the mix should be between 20-25%. But again, pls help us understand the following...
      1. Do you've a chance to rip your motorcycle atleast once a week (read RIP as speeds excessive of 80 Kmph for few second/minute)
      2. What's the general speed that you ride every time?
      3. What was the last time when you carried out a decarbonization on the exhaust & after that how many Kms have you clocked?
      4. What's the brand of 2T oil that you mix?
      5. Apart from mixing the oil in tank, do you have a side oil tank & a working oil pump?
      6. What's the carburettor you're using & what's the size of main & pilot jets?

@Raghu, there could some improper burning of fuel would also lead into smoking high. Apart from Aargee's pointers for you, also suggest to take a look at the spark plug i.e plug reading. There is a thread already present to check the plug color if the engine running good.

Ideally 3% of 2T oil to be mixed with 1 litre of petrol as advised by Yamaha. Offcourse, adding 10 ml extra to 30ml would not lead to any risk, but yes, might see bit smoking but not very irritating.

I ensure 30ml per litre is mixed and have stopped using side oil tank for sometime now. If I do some long rides, would add extra 10ml to the tank.

@Aargee and sriram: guys i always add 40ml of oil for every litre!! sometime even 60ml..as sriram said ,sometimes smoke is bit high ,particularly when i rip it in stretch (>80).other than that it is less only.!!! am i doing a correct thing??/ becoz once my mech told that adding a bit of high oil will make your engine life good though smoke is high !!!and i decarbonized only some 8 months back!!

Raghu, pls learn to use multi quotes, this way it becomes very easy to read & respond. When you use multi quote, this is how you see the posts...

This was asked because, wanted to know if you're spilling out the carbon out once a while. So when you rip do you see excessive smoke everytime & at the end does the white smoke stop?

Ok, are you planning of your own or take it to mech? But remember, either ways, you'll get lot more smoke after decarb for sometime.

This is the main source of issue!!! Stock up a litre of 2T premix oil from reputed fuel station such as Shell. Shell has 2 types of 2T oil, Shell Advance & Shell 2T. Both of them are good. Never, never use the oil sachet you get or the cheap green color oil that they sell in fuel station, especially with the PSU oil companies. It also saves your cost in long run. Normally the 2T oil costs about Rs 10 for 30 ml which means you end up paying Rs 330 for a litre, while it only costs about Rs 233 (max) for Shell Advance or Rs 213 for a litre of Shell 2T oil I don't suggest Shell, you can use Motul or whatever good 2T oil that you get in your locality. Make sure you get a good one.

Which means, you're mixing 20 ml from side tank as well as 20 ml as premix, which contributes to 40 ml. From my trial & errors, I learned that anything more than 25% is bound to smoke slightly & like Sriram says, read the plug, it should be oily WHICH IS NOT IDEAL!!!

It has just been an old and consistant dream to own a YAM and now i ve got a chance to fulfil it, so would want to know everything about it, rather than goin back to my mechanic for every small thing....
No issues Its all learning curve, had anyone asked me this question 3 months ago, I would answered much worse than you did If you're having Rx135 with 4 gears then the pilot (for stock carb) should be 165 mains & 17.5 pilot. Let me know if you've 5 gears.

Raghu, do this first, before anything else. If possible take a good quality of the pic of the spark plug & post it for us here.

Most mech's words are nonsense!!! You need to keep decarbing for every now & then if you use anything upto or more than 30%. Per the Yamaha workshop manual it is 20%. 25-30% is the safest because, you don't know when you might rip the bike & had there been an GOOD WORKING oil pump, it SHOULD do its job faithfully by mixing the right amount of oil. But for a premix, no matter you rip or not, the quantity is going to be the same. So on a safer side, 25-30% is fine. If one is sure to ride in the speed upto 70 Kmph, 20-25% is more than sufficient. I mix only 20-25 these days & cruise in 70 everyday & touch upto 90 religiously everyday. Every Friday & Sunday I rip to 110. Anyways, my mixture is rich too.

when i rip i do see excessive smoke, and the smoke doesnt die down until i switch off the bike ignition. it keeps spewing smoke even in idling

Ok, are you planning of your own or take it to mech? But remember, either ways, you'll get lot more smoke after decarb for sometime
Well... i have never done this, so will be taking it to the mech... may be i ll checkout how he goes about it and the next time i might give it a shot..

Well i ll try all that you guys just told and get back to you guys... Thanks a ton for all the valuable suggestions.. Will check out the spark plug.. will post a pic soon

^^^ Good luck, I hope you read my point on oil mixing way too above than normal level. Oh!!! and again, pls do post the pic of the rear end of your exhaust from where the smoke is spewed. Would like to see the oil content covered around it. Do you think there's oil dripping or something like that?

Anyways, post the pic of the plug & also check if there're oil leaks from the tranny & head.

Well you can even use 20 ml per litre, but ride not in excess of 60 Kmph. I experimented with 20 ml & rode in excess of 60, but still nothing happened.

Obviously because oil doesn't burn as good as petrol, so they'll be left over on the plug & causing too much maintenance on your piston & cylinder head, exhaust pipes in addition to plug

Yes, check them out, some of them would be MICO, but the later ones SHOULD be NGK with the model number. NGK is what Escorts/YMIS suggests & is available in OE packing. Personally I couldn't find any difference between OE & Mico.

Do post the pic of your plug before & after cleaning.
