  • My Z ........ My JOY

    Introduction:

Hi everyone, this is Atul and I live in Port Blair, Andamans. I have grown up with a lot of two strokes around, beginning with my Dad's Rajdoot 175 which he had for 22years, followed by RXG, Bajaj Priya and Kinetic Honda. I only got to ride my dad's rajdoot in the early days which i felt lacked joy. It was Rx-100 which used to see zooming thosedays, i liked its sound and swiftness. Only after getting to ride my dad's RXG, i realised what Rajdoot was missing! It was that day when i wished to have one for myself, but being too small and the bike being too powerful, i could only get to ride it occassionally, that too with dad!

Then came the Z, the bike I wanted to have from the day I saw it first. I loved the styling, the Headlamp, tail lamp, the silencer almost everything . In a few months time, the building next to mine had two rxz's which i used to see everyday, this used to give me some kind of joy But unfortunately my Dad never liked the bike.

Years passed by and i got an Apache for myself. I was very happy with it and the longing for RX-Z kept diminishing slowly and slowly as i couldnt see too many of Z's on roads in the past few years.

Its around July, last year when i returned to port blair after completing my graduation from chennai and all of a sudden i could see a few two strokes, mostly RX100 and 135 in showroom condition or even better and this is when the Z-bug reached heights!! I started wandering everywhere, kept visiting many garages asking around for RXZ with clear papers as people here are very careless about the documents, my dad being one Saw about 5 RX-Zs, each had some noise from the engine and none had a decent tank. Finally after a month decided to go for this Z as it had a pretty decent silencer and the frame was good. To my surprise both the meters were working fine. Got the bike for 12k and i was a happy man for quite sometime

The bike had two previous owners, is a 98 model and the RC was valid till feb 2013.

As the RC was to expire in feb, which was just a few months away from my purchase, i had to plan its restoration.

    Restoration Plan:

I have been on xbhp for quite sometime and had come accross many restoration threads, where i got to read many a times that RXZ spares are rare and restoring a Z is very tough job. These statements are very discouraging i must say, made me and many others lose hope of restoring a Z to their desired levels. Moreover me being from a place where parts are extinct, i didnt have much hope either! Initially had plans just to repaint the bike and fix the engine problems.

But still i had a hope, started visiting all the local spares shops and the lone Yamaha Showroom here asking for all the available RXZ and RX-135 spares that were available. The Showroom's owner is another hopeless fellow who wasnt ready to take orders at all! He just seems interseted in the FZs and R15s. The hunt continued and to my surprise i found a local shop which had the fibre body kits, not OE but decent ones and many other spares, moreover he was ready to take orders as well this turned the restoration spark to fire!

Then i started following many 2-stroke restoration threads, came to know a few very good seniors who were very happy to help and source me many parts as well. I randomly started make list of spares was surprised to see that almost each of of them could be sourced! I started talking to a few seniors and got a lot of vauable tips and suggestions which helped me plan the restoration. Made priority lists, started planning the time frame for the restoration, spent a lot of time tbinking about the spares to be procured, works to be done etc.

Slowly and slowly in the past few months i have been collecting spares, some from my place, only about 25-30% could be arranged here. I find myself very lucky to be getting help and sparss from various parts of the country, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Kochi, and Chattisgarh and now the list is about 90% complete, thanks to Nitesh Bhaiya, Sriram sir, Vijay anna, Ram anna, Rishi bhaiya, Akhil, Raj, and a few local friends here for taking me so close to my dream.

I was in a dilemma to start a thread or not as and this is the reason why I have started the thread when the bike is already deimantled.

Go ahead, with so many good people out here in this forum you can get all the help you need.
Even I like the RXZ than the RX and the only reason I didn't buy one was the lack of spares.
Good luck with your rebuild !!

The bike was stripped down about ten days back and the chasis was sent out for repairs. A few spots were eaten up by rust, luckily no bends!

the chasis, engine casings, clutch and magnet covers, wheel hubs, bore, head a few clamps and headlight stays have already been sent to the paintshop.

I wanted to make it a 5 Speed Z, hence bought a RX-135 5-Speed as well, which is to be used as the Organs Donor! The gearbox, bore and head will be borrowed ffrom it. The clutch cover needs to be drilled for rpm gear provision, which i dont think can be done right at my place, so it has been kept aside for now.

I will upload the spares pics and pics from the paint booth tonight

thanks satish anna, yes the bike was total paisa vasool for the price. I never thought colour selection would be so tough :O since there are no plating centers here, am not getting the silencer plated for now, i will be polishing it and using it as it is. Front mudguard i have bought the SS125's as i liked its design.

The place where the seat placed is the most rust prone area in case of Rx , not sure about Z though.

Please post the pictures of the 5 speed RXZ..
RXZ came with a tachometer right from the factory, how come you have to drill the tachometer hole??

yes, rxz 5-speed comes with tachometer from the factory, but i got a rx135 5-speed rx dude, not rxz 5-speed.

the engine has been removed from the frame and has been dis-assembled

will also use the main stand from the 5-speeder

Are you planning to keep the clutch cover of 5 speed??? . I like the 5 speed clutch cover but couldn't get a new one so bought the 4 speed one.

Atul - Nice to see a restoration thread opened up. Your attention to detail will make you learn more and understand it's importance. I guess by now you almost got all the parts to start the restoration. All the best and you just can't go wrong when seniors and Z restoration experts are present to guide you.

FYI.. While restoring, never throw the old parts i.e even nut bolt, screws, washers, etc. All all these, as you never know the new ones might throw a surprise anytime. Ask the mech to tighten the engine bolt (while mounting on the frame) in equal pressure if not the torque wrench available. Plonk Rubbers parts duly and have couple of them extra just incase.
Ask the mech to be extra careful while placing the body parts and tank. Infact, you can even ask him to wear gloves and request him to take time while fixing the body parts.

thanks a lot sir, your suggestions have helped me a lot and eased the process a bit. I am paying a lot of attention to detail, hope it turns out well Ande yes sir, almost all the parts are with me except the rims, engine bearings set, yokes, levers and tank(on the way). All the seniors whom i have interacted with have guided me very well so far

I have the habit of keeping old stuffs as i have been changing a lot of things in my apache so the old things will not be thrown away, i know their importance sir
most of the dismantling was carried out by me, and even while assembling, i will try to do the most of it sir, so i will make sure everything is tightened to the right pressure and body parts are handled well
