Ride 11: Mandharagiri (Basadi Betta)

Mandharagiri (Basadi Betta)

Another impromptu ride.

Last five days were extremely hectic. My mind and heart screamed for a ride to relax. I really wanted to go to a place where I could spend at least half an hour all alone.Time was at premium. I had around fours of free time and I just wanted to ride. Started at 11:30 AM. Decided to ride to this picturesque and peaceful hillock called Mandharagiri, also known as Basadi betta (Name since this happens to be a Jain shrine)

Took NICE road and then connected to NH4 and as one approaches Tumkur, on the right side one would see an arch and also the hillock with a white line on it. Once I took the deviation on to right,reached a Railway cross. Stopped as a train was croosing. After that crossed a village called Panditanahalli and rode through bit of country side and reached the base of the hill at 1 PM.

At the base of the hill, found a nomadic group drying their clothes on the railings of steps. The white line that is visible from the highway is nothing but flight of stairs. Started the climb. There are approximately 400 plus steps. Good cardio workout. There were hardly anybody. A group of guys were descending and one told me that temple at the top was closed.

Reached top and it was just breathtaking. This is supposed to be a pilgrim center for Jaininsm followers. However, did not find anyone there. As usual my pictures may not do full justice. The view was spectacular all around. There was just no one and was greeted by a beautiful painting done by an anonymous person on a rock. Went around temple. It was so peaceful and breeze was on a heavier side. I spent good 45 minutes there. I was joined by a romantic couple at the top of the hill. They settled quietly in the backside of temple. I thought it was time for me to leave.

Climbed down. Visited the newly built statue of Tirthankara. Statue looks similar to Baahubali Statue. I am not sure of the name of Tirthankara. One can also see the name Mandharagiri carved on the hillock. Resumed return leg at 1.50 PM and reached home at 3.15 PM.

I would recommend everyone around Bangalore to visit this place once and spend time for introspection and retrospection. I was thoroughly refreshed at the end of ride.

Ride 12: Antaragange

Just couple of days ago had a ride to Mandharagiri which was so relaxing, even though a very short ride. Another opportunity to ride, a short one, presented itself.I did not want to miss any opportunity to ride and explore. Longer the ride, better. But, I have to be content with short rides for quite some time. Today, I have to fly out of station in the evening. So, had free time till 10 AM in the morning as family gets up little late due to weekend. Last night informed the Benelli group that I would be riding to a nearby destination, probably Antaragange. Missed a Benelli group ride to this destination some time ago. A ride to this visit was on my wish list. More so for caves exploration. Two Benellians, Srinivas/ @ironmarine and Mayank, decided to join me. We decided to start by around 5.30 AM.

I started at 5.30 AM. Mayank joined me at 6 AM. We both caught up with Srinivas around 6.20 AM. We again regrouped after the Kolar toll plaza. Beautiful highway stretch. Kolar is famous for it's gold mine, KGF or Kolar Gold Fields. And by 7, it was clear blue sky with Lord Sun emitting his golden rays and at some parts literally everything turned gold in color. A little fog only multiplied the beauty.

We stopped at Vasudev Adigas which is a common meeting point for many bikers and groups from Kolar and Bangalore. After completing breakfast over a talk of our rides, we rode through small lanes of Kolar. Missed the route a bit. With help of locals guidance we got back on to the right track and reached Antaragange by 8.50 AM.

Mayank and Sri had visited this place before and they decided to stay at the base, talking about bikes and their experiences. I was under bit of pressure as we had taken longer than expected to reach the destination as per my calculation. I started the climb to temple. Around 200+ steps, climb was very easy. Lot of monkeys around. So, one has to be careful with their belongings. Stairs were flanked by tall trees on either side and it was chill with cool breeze. Sunny and quite peaceful too. Reached the top in like ten minutes. Good cardio. It's a special feeling to walk in such ambience. Spent some time in and around the holy pond. Pond has Lord Shree Ganapati's statue in the middle. Very nice. Paid my obeisance. Spent some time inside temple of Lord Shree Shiva and Goddess Sri Parvati accompanied by Lord Shree Ganesha. A man was playing Shehnai. It was a surreal feeling inside.

A kid outside temple asked me about wher I am from. I asked him about caves. He said one has to walk about two Km. If one has to go by motorcycle, it would be five Km. It was already 9.30 AM, and I had told my family that I would be home by 10 AM and I was definitely missing that. IKid offered his guiding services. I said some other time. Went to Lord Subrahmanya's temple. It was closed. Paid obeisance from outside and started to climb down.

Saw a huge group of school kids on their way to temple. Went to view point. Was there for some time looking at the rocky hills. Reached the base at 9.45 AM. This place was so calm and peaceful. How I wish I was here by sun rise. I also missed caves exploration which pinched me. I decided to revisit this pace very soon specially for caves exploration. We had a small talk and started our return ride.

We regrouped near Hoskote Toll Plaza. I had to rush as it was already 10.50. So, I bid good bye to both and reached home by 11.20 AM. Time well spent with fellow Benellians.
