Yes, it would start raining in mid July or so. Earlier, there used to be one measly pitter-patter 10 drop drizzle to pass off as rain but nowadays, due to climatic change, even Ladakh sees rain.Originally posted by chicmagnet View PostBeen following the thread but one thing I ain't sure of is the weather..Will it be raining (in north, shimla, manali, J&K - silly question I think!) especially in July - since this is the only month I have in hand and I might just make a trip in this month.
You could slot into the last week of June to first week of July period to just about escape the main monsoon.

Dear Vicky...leaving the bike at the railway parcel office is a pain...the more number of days you leave it there you will have to pay moreOriginally posted by vicky316 View PostThanks for the info icemang
Well I am Planning to book the tickets of June 13 th.. It passes through mangalore at 8 30 pm and Reaches Amritsar on June 15th 23:55. It runs on every wednesday.
So 1 week before that is wednesday June 7th. Same time 8 30 pm We will load our bikes on train. and it will reach Amritsar on June 9th 23:55.. And we will be going to railway parcel office on June 16th at Amritsar.
.
Will this plan go proper ? Here the only problem is no daily train to these places.
after 3 days of recieving the bike at the designated station if you dont pick the bike, from the 4th day they will start charging Rs. 10/- every hour. this is as per the rule only, they will give you proper reciept.
also if you leave your bike for more than 2 days, they dont give respect for anything there...your bike keeps taking loads and it keeps moving the other direction with more luggage coming in...(think about amount of parcel which comes in daily and the same keeps dumped in)..its going to be a task if its late by a week to get it out & also there would be quite a lot of damages, you need to spend time in getting those fixed.
I had left mine for more than a week and I had to pay huge penalty for it and also my handle bar had a bend, indicators were well packed but still damaged. rear light damaged. the mirror pipe bent.
take care of your bike and ensure it is in best of the condition before the Leh ride
cheers & happy rideNever Give up on something that you can't go a day without thinking about.
Cheers

Budget about Rs 40K for everything. It depends upon the level of comfort that you want en-route.Originally posted by yuviall4u View Posthey! i know its type of silly question?

@Ramesh. May I request you to quote correct information only, which can be corroborated from official sources, especially when it comes to money matters. About the charges. The window for free collection is open for 6 hours after the bike reaches the station, not 4 days. After that, the charges are Rs 10/- per hour, no hanky panky, receipts are give.
As to the condition of the bike. This is India. 'Nuff said.Last edited by icemang; 04-19-2012, 10:27 AM.

Then it seems that someone forgot about your bike or they did not know the rules themselves.Originally posted by rameshmadhavan View PostThat was my experience, I had sent my bike from Chennai to Jaipur on 22nd & the same reached Jaipur on 24th, I was not charged till 27th and from 28th onwards they charged me Rs. 240/- per day, i took it on 10th of next month, I was charged for 14 days. and I have a reciept from the Railways for the same
I am quoting the 6 hr window and Rs 10/- per hour from the railways website. I have lost the link and will put it up once I find it again. This issue was confirmed by the authorities at Pune railway station too.
Still, lucky you

Hi Icemang!
Followed this thread for some while now, your interest & preparations on the subject are the best i came across, amongst many similar forums.
Like more than a lot of our fellow riders, its a dream for me too, to ride to Leh & back.
Would be thankful if you can suggest on distance/time, pros & cons of
1) Delhi-Manali-Leh & back via same route
2) Delhi-Manali-Leh & Leh-Jammu-Amritsar-Delhi
I am short of time but will make for the trip by all means, besides I might be doing it solo so far, unless i catch up like minded bugs enroute.

Regards
ParryEvery time i am able to change my bike's engine oil, i feel like passing another semester amongst thousands, of being a proficient rider.
