              • Back from Leh

Our team of Maneesh Joshi, Neville Shroff, Vaibhav Modak and Fakhruddin Dahodwalla returned from Delhi to Mumbai and Pune on 23 June. We had to scrap our plans to ride from Delhi to Mumbai/Pune due to extreme heat wave conditions in North India. The financial implications too were somewhat similar so it made better sense to fly down rather than subject bike and rider to 5 punishing days in the heat and dust of North India.

It was a fantastic trip and I shall put up the log shortly. Queries, questions, let 'em fly!

Congrats to both of you. I am sure you had loads of fun and adventure. Few questions for you:
                    1) Please advice regarding the weather conditions in and around Leh.
                    2) Is it advisable to visit Pahalgam at this point since Amarnath yatra has started?
                    3) Out of Nubra valley and Tso Moriri, which place would you advice us to visit? We can only make it to one of them including Pangong & Khardung La due to time constraints.
                    4) Check points where we need to register ourselves enroute Srinagar - Leh and the permits process in Leh (time taken, documents required etc)

For your information, we are leaving on 27th night from Delhi and need to return home max by July 8th night (have to join office on 9th). Now, we are going via Srinagar and returning via Manali so it would be very helpful of you to provide some important tips for our trip since it's our first and we are just going by whatever info we have gathered from web.

And yes, waiting for the travelogue and loads of pics

                    Thanks

                      Hi,

I am planning for a Leh lone ride on my FZ16 (Odo: 35K) this August. The plan as of now is to start from Kalka to Manali to Leh and back the sam way in 7 days. please help me in my queries below:

                      1. Is there any risk in planning the trip for 7 days
                      2. Is it really time consuming/ difficult to get the permit for visiting "the highest motorable road" When, where and how to get?
                      3. Should i change the stock tubeless radial tyres of FZ16 with the tubed ones?
                      4. Is there anyone else planning for the ride in August so that i can join them?

we had many plan modification during the ride due to permit reasons and our time constraints but in total it took us 14 days for a well sighted tour of leh...
you need to apply for the permits in DC office..the earlier you go, the better it is...less people rush..
it might be rainy in july so just check for the weather updates n all...though more or less its pretty useless as weather changes randomly...we got snow shower when weather forecast said clear sky...

                        1. weather is amazing...cold in leh and cold n chilly wind in khardung La n pangong tso..surrounding regions...
                        2. after leh it was hard for us to adore the beauty of dal lake and srinagar...rest its once own preference..
                        3. i would refer tso moriri as i have heard that its one of the most beautiful places...the road for nubra are not that good too...
                        4. you need permissions only when you are in leh...you need to get them from DC office..its a 3hr.s job..carry photocopy of your id with you...id that have a address proof...

the Srinagar-Manali route would be easier to drive as there are almost 60-70% roads...but on leh to manali the road conditions are bad...10-12days are good enough and you are traveling by car so you will cover more distance per day on you run to leh...

                        1. personally i feel that leh is to feel and enjoy not to reach and rush back..7 days is the bare min. time you can be there to see beauty..
                        2. 3 hr.s is the max. time you need to collect the pass...but be sure that you are reaching on a weekday and going DC office early as soon as it opens..
                        3. fz radial are puncture prone that's what i have heard...i went hard compound and got punctured...will suggest a good new off roading hard or alteast medium compound,,,

Thanks Scilent killer. I know that 7 days is not enough to enjoy Leh. My leave is very less thats why i had to cut the ride to 7 days. . I have also read of the high altitude sickness of bikes. My FZ16 is fitted with K&N RC1060 air filter, will this help in any means or should i change it back to the stock?
Also, do i need to do any fuel jet adjustments from Manali before i start to Leh?

7 days is too short a period to actually complete this ride.

K&N or stock air filter. . . both won't help. You do not need to get the jet adjustment in manali. You can get it done in Leh. Bike suffers the problem mainly in Chang La and Khardung La i.e. above 15000 ft height.

Thanks Vishwas. I understand from your travelogue that there is a mechanic in airport road where i can get my jet adjusted in Leh.

My bike is FZ16 (ODO 35K) can you please advise on the ideal tyres (rear and front) which i should select for Manali -Leh.

How did you carry extra petrol from Tandi (and howmuch). My plan is to ride to Khardung La.

How can i fix the saddle bags and tank bags properly because when i did some off road trials i found it very difficult to avoid slipping of my package.

As of now i am riding alone, i would be very helpful if you knows anyone who is making Leh in Mid August.

Any studded tire is ok. I had fitted Eurogrip on rear rim and stock on front.

I did not travel Manali - Leh stretch as the roads were closed. My advice is to carry couple of empty engine oil cans. They are quite small and fit in saddle bag pockets and good for carrying fuel. You won't need more than 2 litres in any case.

Saddle bags can be fitted without any issue. Just tie the straps properly.

Tank bag does not stick properly to the plastic tank. The remedy for that is to get velcro straps (available at any upholstery shop), thread them through the brackets provided on tank bag and then fix them. Check photos in my thread.
