the total distance via the coastal route is about 600 km, so you can do it in 2 days as well if you want.
but 3 days gives you plenty of time to go clickety click

    one route option could be:
Vashi - Seawoods - turn right at the end of palm beach road - wahal - jambhulpada - join NH17 at the toll - Pen - Wadkhal - Alibaug - Kashid - Rajapuri (ferry to Dighi) - Diveagar - Harihareshwar (first halt)

Harihareshwar - Bagmandala (ferry) - Velas - Kelshi (ferry) - Anjarle - Karde (Dapoli) - Dabhol (ferry) - Guhaghar - Tavasal (ferry) - Ganpatipule - Ratnagiri - continue south on NH 4 - Malvan/Tarkarli (second halt)

Tarkarli - Continue on SH4 - enter Goa

All points have been picked up from google maps for easy reference.

since it is two guys going on bikes, i suggest you do not make any advance bookings, and stop wherever u feel like, or once the sun goes down.

good night halt points are : diveagar, harihareshwar, velas, anjarle, karde, guhaghar, ganpatipule, ratnagiri, tarkarli.

there are many scenic points you can check out, like the birla temple near revdanda. there is also a national park around that, which has leopards in it, if you want, you can stay there for the night, but you will have to do an advance booking.
Man! This is Awesome!!! Thanks a lot I'll definitely share my experience with the xBhpians after the trip.

    EDIT: Typo!

I'm planning to visit Goa from Ahmedabad during the last days of December.

I have Thunderbird 500 and my friend who is going to accompany, has a Classic 350.

I've gone through a lot of online articles and now frankly speaking, I'm confused.

The return is definitely going to be via Pune, in 2 days with a halt in Mumbai. But, we're just wondering if we could go to Goa via the coastal route which includes a couple of fantastic ferry rides. I fathom that this route will take 2 days from Mumbai to reach Goa. But I want to make this ride a fantastic one, with scenic beauty.

Can someone suggest my a good route? Along with where we can take the halt in between?

      Thanks in advance
      Hi.

Follow what KOS said. Brilliant way to explore the coast.

If your halt plan includes Tarkarli, make sure you book SAGAR KINARA HOTEL online. Its awesome and worth every penny. Check in time is 12 pm and check out is 11 am. It has private parking with fencing, gates and security as well. Its right beside the Malwan Beach and just 5 kms away from Tarkarli beach. Dont miss Scuba Diving and Sindhdurg Fort tour.

In Goa, after multiple stays here and there, I found Calangute Residency Annexe (not Calangute Residency) the best in budget. Placed right in the centre of North Goa(near candolim, baga beaches and about 15 kms away from south goa). Make sure you do the Ferry at the Santa Monica Jetty. It starts at about 6 pm.

If you are planning to return via Pune, Then from Goa, move towards Rajapur on NH17 and after that near a village called Pali(some 10 kms before Ratnagiri Junction), take a right towards Amba Ghat road. Use Karad exit to touch NH4 towards Pune. This is the only road which has the least potholes as of Nov 2015 and the least aggressive ghats. All other exits(Chiplun, Mahad, Poladpur) are real pain. However, if you wish to come via Mahabaleshwar, then take poladpur exit. You will average at 30-40 kmph from Poladpur to Mahabaleshwar.

On NH17, mind you, if you are new on these roads, do not challenge your self on the ghats. They turn quick and sharply without any notice. Rajapur and Chiplun ghats are heavily prone to accidents(not the collision type, but "loose control due to excessive speed while turning on ghat and go off road" type.) I request you to be patient on these ghats unless you are masters of cornering .

You will love driving on the highway portion between MAH and Goa border. Also, when you see the checkpost at the border, slow down(50-60 kmph is good) just as precaution. Nothing to worry about though.

You will have to rely on google maps anyways.

Note: If time is constraint and you wanna go from point X to Y(where X and Y are more than 50 kms) fast, dont even think about internal coastal roads after Chiplun. Head straight for NH17. Longer but faster. This is from my personal experience. Night driving is not a problem on any of the roads, but be ultra careful in GHAT sections.

      Hi.

That would be NH 17. Should be a typo.

this has happened to me some time ago. i was driving down (not biking) and i had just finished a lunch stop, and the roads were completely empty, but zigzaging like crazy. i was a lot younger, more risky behaviour, the road crested on top of a hill and turned sharply right, which i realized only after reaching the top. i was doing 70-80 and by reflex i turned the wheel to the right, but it was not enough and my front left tyre went off the road. as a result of that i braked harder and the entire car skidded 180 degrees, ABS notwithstanding... i figuratively shit my pants that day. damn lucky nobody was coming behind me, else it would have been a head on collision for sure...

          feels scary even today!!!!

Very practical, though Day one will be endurance tester.

I suggest you do scuba diving and snorkelling in the first batch(Thats 7-8 am I think, but you can do a quick interogation there a night before. The Scuba diving office is right near the beach. Its not a office as a matter of fact, the scuba diving guys home. Dont hestitate to shout "Koi hai kya". ). Doing in first batch gives you the advantage of clear water. The more people go, the sand is disturbed and the water starts getting murky. Bargaining wont work, fixed GOVT charges, but try anyway. Also go around Malwan market in evening, nothing special but gives u different feeling.

Have a shower and then go to Sinddhudurg. All the best.

              Regards.

P.S: If you are coming back via Pune, trust me...do not take any other route except Amba Ghat-Karad unless you are planning to explore the other ghats. You will curse the potholes.

OFF THE TOPIC: I am doing Rann of Kutch on motorbike. I plan to leave mumbai by 4 am and will reach Ankaleshwar by 8 am. Do I need to worry about traffic jam at golden bridge/Sardar PAtel Bridge this time? Any suggesstions to get out fast?

                Thanks for your prompt response.

Don't worry about golden bridge. In the mornings, it usually doesn't get jammed up. Also, the trick is (if you are on motorbike, and even if the road is jammed) to drive swiftly on the leftmost lane. There's a lane, as small as a bike's width which is always kept unused by the car/truck drivers (unless they are not maniacs).

Rann of Kutch is a fantastic trip, I hope you'll enjoy a lot! Also, don't forget to catch the glimpse of Rann on a full moon night. It looks ammmmaaaazzziiing! And if you get time, visit Dholavira for sure.

Yes. Bang on. However, you are turning for Kolhapur Highway at WATUL. I had turned at Pali. But I dont think 15-20 kms will any difference.

well, considering you guys will be on bullets, plus the heavy traffic between ahmedabad and baroda and near the bridge on the narmada, plus the pathetic road condition between wahal and pen, your plan for doing ahmedabad to anjarle in 1 day is unrealistic. i have done panvel to ahmedabad in 12 hours riding with a bullet rider, so i have some experience with this stretch. i suggest you guys break it into 2 days (ahmedabad - anjarle). alternatively, go how much ever you can every day till dusk.

i say this because the road after wahal is an unlit 2 lane highway with heavy traffic of ST buses, trucks and whatnot, AND it is under construction.

for any help anytime, just contact me, i stay in panvel.

when are you planning to start?

Thank you for the guidance, kos!

We are planning to reach Anjarle in Day 1, as we want to reach Malvan till Day 2, EOD.

We are planning to start tomorrow morning 5 am.

I've recently been to the renovated NH8 and it's now an awesome road from Ahmedabad till Mumbai.

Your contact number can be of a great help.

A week back I had made a Nashik-Mumbai one day trip on my bike and was utterly disappointed at the road conditions. There are quite a few potholes along the way and the repair job on them is pretty poor. Moreover, the new rumblers introduced on the stretch at multiple points are huge and unending. Saw almost all cars except big SUVs struggling and jiggling over these rumblers let alone smaller bikes.

The road is not that bad per se but definitely not what it used to be. Cruising at high speeds requires a lot of concentration. This news article bears testimony to these facts.

The entire expressway. As I said before, the surface is not what it was.

Seconded. I did Pune-Mumbai-Bhopal-Pune in Nov 2015. I did not get much potholes. But yes, those rumblers are annoying. Technically, they are not rumblers as the road sign says. They are a series of 4-5 mini spead breakers. At first I thought it must be "rumbler" when I read sign "Rumbler ahead" only to get freaked out at 100+ kmph.
