A couple of friends and me are on a trip from Chennai to Calicut via Kodai where we will be vacationaing for a few days, so just wanted to ask you friendly people out there about the road conditions from Chennai to Kodai as well as from Kodai to Calicut.

    The Route

    Leg 1
Chennai - Chengalpattu - Perambur - Trichi BP - Dindigul BP - Batlagundu - Kodaikanal

Just want to know road conditions of above route

    Leg 2
    Kodaikanal - Palani - Pollachi - Palakkad - Malappuram - Calicut

For the 2nd Leg ride need some serious advice because we basically just connected dots on google maps and have no idea what we are getting ourselves into.

Any help would be much appreciated
    Thanks in advance
LEG1 will be very easy as they are four lane highway till dindugal .
Not sure about the current ghat road condition to the top but 6 months back it was slightly under construction (they were laying cement blocks where they might be mild water streams in rains ).
And ghat road is very wide and unscarry .
Also choose the time of riding in trichy highway wisely or else you will end up battling with notorious high speed traffic .

Don't miss to turn into trichy to get into the Dindukal highway as its easy to miss

Shiradi Ghats have deteriorated especially from Gundya to Sakleshpur side. I will not take this route from now on.

Sakleshpur-Hassan is also bad especially few kilometres before and after Sakleshpur town which is horrible! Roads inside Sakleshpur itself is no good.

This is for people commuting in chennai

Road from CAMP ROAD JN to AGARAM via Barath univ is being expand to 4 lane with little info on construction of small bridges and diversion.

3 or more people has lost their life in bikes in past two month and still with zero illumination and diversion warnings .

Chennai By-Pass from maduravayal to tambaram is in worst state ever so ride slow expect potholes and irregularities because of relaying in this toll road .

Roads in and around palani are assumed to be totally damaged .

                A massive landslip at Idivizhundhan
                Odai near Saverikadu blocked Palani-
                Kodaikanal highway, halting traffic
                for several hours. Oddanchatram-
Pachalur road was closed as a tree
                fell on it near Kadaisikadu.
                Bodi-Munnar highway was closed
again owing to another major landslip
                on Monday night.

                  Bangalore->C.R Patna->Holenarasipur->Arakalagud->Shanivarasanthe->Somwarpete->Madikeri->Sullia->Puttur

Bangalore-C.R Patna: Excellent four lane National Highway.
C.R Patna->Holenarasipur->Two lane road for most part. Odd potholes here and there and about one kilometer of pure torture just before one enters Holenarsipur.
Holenarasipur-> Arakalagud->Two lane road. Odd potholes and undulations.
Arakalagud->Shanivarasanthe-Two lane road. Odd potholes and undulations.
Shanivarasanthe->Somwarapete->Madikeri-> Land of curves! For people with motion sickness Somwarpet-Madikeri stretch maybe difficult. Else smooth two lane roads.
Madikeri-Sullia->Average roads with some nasty undulations after Kallugundi. But nothing drastic, manageable.
Sullia-Puttur-> Till Jalsoor roads are average and after that it is good all the way till Puttur.

After Mysore, take NH 212 till Gundlupet and then NH 67 via Bandipur, madhumalai and masinagudi to Ooty - Short and scenic. Road condition is a mixed bag. Initially bad, then highway is smooth - Narrow till ooty with only one lane, bandipur has a few bad patches in between. Hairpins in ooty climb is also bad in few places. But the joy of seeing the scenic vistas will make up for all the hardships (which is very less).

Had a drive in car from Bangalore to Kunnamkulam(Kerala) on Nov 8th. Went via Salem route as I heard the Nilambur route the roads are not in good condition.
From Bangalore to Avinashi the roads are a bliss to ride. Can easily maintain 100+ through out.
From Avinashi to coimbatore some work is in progress & they have mentioned to go in 30km/hr speed (in some locations esp. nearby flyovers) and there are speed-breaker humps which pops every now & then.
From Coimbatore to Palakkad the roads are single lane and also the road conditions are very bad and it becomes worse as we reach palakkad.
From Palakkad dont take the thrissur route as the road conditions are very bad with fly over construction in every nook and corner.
The roads were full of dust & it was like riding in a foggy condition where visibility is less.
                              Go via Alathur route.
                              Route: Palakkad --> Alathur --> Chelekara -->Marathencode --> Kunnamkulam
The above road conditions are superb even though its bit narrow. But less traffic and scenery is cool.
Saved a lot of time by avoiding Thrissur route.
The other options are via Shornoor & pattambi. But takes more time than the Alathur route.

Find local businesses, view maps and get driving directions in Google Maps.

Any updates on the Bankapur Ankola stretch ?
Last I went there was on 18th August 2014, road up until Mundgod was in a mess. I would be going further up and take the Hubli-ankola stretch otherwise.
