Good roads good roads and good roads throughout. Just be a tad careful around Harihar where it becomes two lane for some distance, apart from that its good, but can be a bit boring.

Narrow roads, can be painful for a drive. Buses come full on with full throttle on blind curves. Have to be tad careful.

            Thank You Phanikar.

Narrow roads I can manage somehow but how is the road surface? Pot-holed or smooth?

Sorry forgot to mention that. Its potholed, not smooth.

                Update:

Only put up updates for specific sections, others have been more or less the same so no updates.

                Bangalore-Mysore-Gundulpet-Sultan Bathery - Muttil - Sultan Bathery - Gudalur - Mysore - Bangalore

Nanjangud - Gudulpet: This whole stretch is being widened and there are plenty of diversions forcing you to get off the road and go bumpy mud roads. If it rains these become big slush pits.

Gundulpet -Sultan Bathery : After the turn at Gundulpet the similar road widening work delays progress quite a bit, but its not so much in number yet.

Sultan Bathery - Noolpuzha - Gudalur: Sultan Bathery till Noolphuzha is slightly bumpy and narrow. After crossing into the TN border roads are butter smooth all the way till Gudalur.

Gudalur - Theppekadu: Plenty of potholes and missing road sections. Its gets even more "fun" once its starts raining as the potholes become invisible and the missing road sections just become long slush pits.

                    Route taken : Bangalore-Mysore-Bandipur-Gudalur-Vazhikkadavu-Edakkara-Karulai-Karuvarakundu-Melattur-mannarkkad-Karimba-Mundur(turn right and first left) Parali -Kuzhalmannam-Erimayur-Nemmara-Nelliyampatty-Seetharagundu-Nemmara-Vadakkencherry-Pattikkad-Nadathara-Chalakudy-Angamaly-Kalady-Perumbavoor-Kodanad-Kombanad-Mekkappala -Pindimana-Kothamangalam- Punekkad-Bhoothathankettu-Thattekkad-Kuttampuzha-Pooyamkutty-Urulanthanni-Mamalakandam-Mankulam-Munnar-vattavada-munnar-Chittirapuram-Anachal-Selliyampara-Chelachuvadu-Krimbam-Vazhathope-Idukki dam-Kalavari mount-Kattappana-KakkattuKada-Elappara-kuttikannan-Mundakayam-Erumely-Ranny-Parhanamthitta-Punalur-Chenkottai-Coutralam-Ravanasamudram-Agastiyar Falls-Servalar- Kariyar Dam-kadayam-Tenkasi-Rajapalayam-Salem-Bangalore

Bangalore-Mysore-Bandipur-Gudalur: Construction underway on Nanjangud Gundlupet Stretch and bad roads from theppakkadu to Gudalur.Apart from that decent roads.

Gudalur-Vazhikkadavu-Edappara-Karulai- Karuvarakundu-Melattur-mannarkkad-Karimba-Mundur(turn right and first left) Parali -Kuzhalmannam-Erimayur-Nemmara-Nelliyampatty: Once you take left after edappara bridge its narrow roads throughout. lack of signboards. Locals are the best GPS. From melattur its palakkad highway so no issues. In case you want to by pass palakkad you can turn right at mundur junction and the first left to parali. You would pass by parali railway station and get to the main road. Take the first right after the bridge to kuzhalmannan erumaiyur to connect to nenmara. Once you decaite from mundur its good country rods.if riding/driving at night please be careful as there are one or two unbarricated bridges. From nenmara to nelliyampatty good roads. Forest CP open from 6AM to 6PM. Once past nelliyampatty town one can head to seetharagund and chadramalai estate. Roads are just about average .

Nemmara-Vadakkencherry-Pattikkad-Nadathara-Chalakudy-Angamaly: Horrible traffic NH47 till deviation for Thrissur. After that its four lane roads till Angamaly.

Angamaly-kalady-Perumbavoor-Kodanad-Kombanad-Mekkappala -Pindimana-Kothamangalam: two lane roads starts once you devaite towards munnar highway. From perumbavoor u can deviate to kodand. Kodanad-kombanad-Mekkappala-Pindimana is one crystal maze stretch. After a point of time even your GPS gets confused [emoji14] bad roads after bad roads till Mekkapala. Post mekkappala roads are good till Kothamangalam.

Kothamangalam- Punekkad-Bhoothathankettu-Thattekkad-Kuttampuzha-Pooyamkutty-Urulanthanni-Mamalakandam-Mankulam-Munnar-vattavada. Beautiful winding roads all the way till Pooyamkutty.the old Aluva Munnar route from pooyamkutty is closed completely. As per the locals, if you have a four wheel drive then u can take the vehicle till come distance but not 100% sure since i could not get a concrete info from FRO as it was a sunday when i visited. the alternative to the old aluva Munnar stretch is -Urulanthanni-Mamalakandam-Mankulam-Munnar. Locals are the best to guide as the maps are of negligible help. Bad roads start from once you deviate from mamalagandam. "Do not try this route on a two wheel drive vehicle. Its typical 4X4 country". The trails are so narrow that its difficult to even turn a two wheeler completely, cars are out of question. The stretch is infested with elephants and very dense forest, probably the densest I have ridden through so far. The nearest help in case of emergency is Mankulam which is about 35 kms away. From mankulam its good narrow roads to munnar.

                    Munnar-Vattavada-Koviloor-Munnar:
From the deviation at top station, tree felling is in progress, so the patch is a bit messy with slush and branches and also the last 2-3 KMs to top station are bad. Apart from that its good roads.

Munnar-Chittirapuram-Anachal-Selliyampara-Chelachuvadu-Krimbam-Vazhathope-Idukki dam-Kalavari mount-Kattappana-KakkattuKada-Elappara: Apart from few rough patches because of rains rest of it is in the range of good to very good.

Elappara-kuttikannan-Mundakayam-Erumely-Ranny-Parhanamthitta-Punalur-Chenkottai-Coutralam-Ravanasamudram: overall very good roads. Once you deviate from senkottai the roads are pretty average.

Ravanasamudram-Agastiyar Falls-Servalar- Kariyar Dam-kadayam: Averge country roads. Once you cross papanasam and enter forest limits, the roads are very narrow ghats stretch with two way bus traffic.the local jeeps and mini buses take you off the road. This stretch is worthy only in rains.

Dam-Kadayam-Tenkasi-Rajapalayam-Salem-Bangalore: odd deep potholes pop out of nowhere. Also around the tenkasi-rajapalayam stretch road widening is in progress so they are felling big trees by the side of the road. So you can expect some delay in the process. Once you get to tirumangalam its good roads throughout till Bangalore.

Sorry if its a late reply. Roads are overall good. A small section just before you meet NH209 was being patched. In all probability that should be completed too

                      • Re: Updates On Road Conditions in South India

                        Route: Bangalore-Mysore ORR-Hunsur-Madikeri-Abbi Falls-Mandalpatti-Kotebetta-Suntikoppa-Chetthalli-Siddapura-Pollibetta-Gonikoppal-Hunsur-Bangalore.

Bangalore -Madikeri: ORR(the under construction stretch) is finally "Complete". most unwanted road humps are eliminated on Mysore-Hunsur stretch.

Hunsur-Madikeri- Same old story, good roads overall.

Madikeri -Mandalpatti: Roads are well laid on both Madikeri and Mukkodlu Side, till the point where they stop for asking entry tickets. Except for one point soon after you enter the trail one trail is open for parking and all. Apart from that, all other trails which were earlier open have been closed or trenches are dug open in a way that even 4X4 cant get it. This comes as a fall out of the death of a group of boys who had taken one of the trails and lost control after getting drunk. So its basically one common trail all the way till the view point.

Madikeri-Madapur-Kotebetta: Good roads from Madikeri to Madapur on Somwarpet stretch. At Madapur before the bridge, need to deviate left towards Garvale. Or just keep following the Montrose Resorts Board which is in Garvale. Roads are very narrow even for two hatches to pass through without either of them getting off the road. From Garvale,, less than a Km there is a Arch which reads the direction to Kotebetta. After about 5 kms , you will find one more arch towards the temple.

Madapur-Suntikoppa : new (Wider)roads are being laid, and its almost complete. So good bye to all the potholes in that stretch.

Suntikoppa-Siddapur-Pollibetta-Gonikoppa: Except for few patches or below average roads around Pollibetta, rest of it is good, but narrow.

Gonikoppa-Hunsur: Gooood roads, with unmarked road humps(Unmarked if travelling at nigh only, absence of reflectors) at village crossings.

                          Route updates: Bangalore - Maddur - Mysore(ring road) - Heggadadevanakote - Nisna - Bavali - Kattikulam - Payyampally - Pulpally - Irulam - Sulthan Bathery - Muthanga - (same route) - Bangalore

                          Bangalore - Maddur
:- phenomenal fast roads with some deadly speed breakers. Some speed breakers are missing with sign boards so be cautious in night. Speed breakers inside Maddur as usual.

                          Maddur - Mysore(columbia hospital) :-
After Maddur almost all speed breakers have been removed on both sides of road except those inside Mandya town. Speed breakers are replaced by reflecting barricades which just adds to traffic pile ups.

                          Mysore(columbia hospital) - Heggadadevanakote - Nisna - Bavali - Kattikulam :-
From Mysore took ring road to go towards HD Kotte. Ring road is again phenomenal with unfinished patches under the railway bridge. On ring road took right from Parasayinahundi towards HD Kotte. Next 44 kms is 2 lane roads of good quality tarmac were one can maintain good double digits speed if there isnt any local traffic.
No petrol bunks and no food options until till HD Kotte circle named as Handpost. One Indian Oil petrol bunk at this circle.
From hand post till next 10kms is windy 2 laned roads where one can easily maintain triple digit speeds also. here the road splits in 2 portions, one goes towards kabini and other goes to internal village roads which is single lane infested with potholes and gravel. It is all part of SH33.
Nagarhole entrance comes 6kms ahead on the road and all vehicles are allowed inside it. Wider and fine 2 lane roads converts into narrow 2 lane roads with lot of speed breakers which continues uptill Bavali inside the Nagarhole.
Bavali to Kattikulam is like a race track with lots of turn and fresh greenery after rains. Beaware of locals and animals which cross the road and one cannot see them due to thickness of greenery beside the road.
Only food options are at Bavali and Kattikulam. After HD Kotte petrol bunk is at Kattikulam, so get refilled on either of 2 places before crossing the stretch.

                          Kattikulam - Payyampally - Pulpally - Irulam :-
Just after crossing Kattikulam there is a small road goes off to left from the usual SH54 avoiding the Manathavady road and traffic. Starting 3 kms roads are very narrow single lane roads with broken tarmac and potholes but saw even 4 wheelers and bigger vehicles were crossing this stretch.
Later roads are only wide single lane, but the good tarmac quality helps in maintaining good speed uptill Irulam crossing Payyampally and Pulpally.
Again mere food options uptil Irulam without any petrol bunks.

                          Irulam - Sulthan Bathery - Muthanga :-
Irulam onwards 2 lane roads continues uptil Sulthan bathery with very good quality tarmac and windy roads. Sulthan Bathery to Muthanga is again fast roads but lot unual police checking.
Lot of food options within the perimeter of these places and petrol bunks on both sides.

We were 28 bikers on 23 bikes and took this route to reach Wayanad just to avoid the 45 kms of pathetic stretch in between Gundulpet and Nanjangoodu that too in rains.
yes we encountered good rains, but easy to ride and lesser traffic as compared to usual Mysore - Wayanad route via Gundulpet.
Though bit longer but one can easily cover this stretch in same time with lesser hassles and more fun.
                          Returned via same route.

Hi there! I was planning on a road trip from Chennai to Munnar on the 2nd of July. Seems there's been heavy rains there and a couple of landslides too, and the risk seems to be tottering on the higher side! Any update regarding this?

And is there any suggestions for any other destination in South India? We're planning a 3 day ride. TIA!

                              Bangalore-Malavalli: Good Two lane roads.

Malavalli-Kollegala: From Malavalli you have 2 routes, infact 3:
1.One Head to Talakadu and take the road to Talakadu and connect to Kollegal route.
                              2. Turn right just before the bridge and get to Belakwadi, After about 4 kms turn left. You have ferries Which Transport Bikes, Autos and Small Cars too.
                              3. Right beside the Bridge Where its closed, you have few boats who carry mostly bikes.

Kollegala-Kowdahalli-MM hills: There are few broken patches here and there, but nothing to worry. Once the Ghats start roads are just wonderful.

MM hills-Palar-Gopinatham-Mettur-Mecheri-Thoppur : Brilliant roads till Palar, except for the 3Kms for which the road work is going on. Palar Gopinatham Average to below Average roads. From Palar to Thoppur, roads are overall good

                              Thoppur-Bangalore: Goood 4-6 laned roads.

Did a monsoon ride last to last weekend.

                                Route Update: Bangalore-Hassan-Belur-Devaramane-Kudahalli - Kottigehara - Magundi - Balehonnur - Sringeri - Agumbe - Kundadri - Mulubagilu - Mani Dam - Mulubagilu - Tirthahalli - Kuppali - Koppa - Bhadravati - Tarikere - Kadur - Arsikere - Channarayapatna - Bangalore.

Bangalore - Hassan - Belur: NH48 is as usual smooth and fast uptill Hassan with divider work going on near Hirisave because of which lot of construction material is on road narrowing it down to single lane for a km or 2.
We entered Hassan to exit for Belur. Hassan To Belur is not smooth with lot of patches and uneven roads at many points.

Belur - Devaramane- Continued on Belur to Mudigere route and just before entering Mudigere, there is Mudigere MW Tower and took a left turn for Devaramane which is a village road comprised of well laid smooth narrow 2 lane roads uptil Navimane Homestay. From there take right and it is single lane road uptill Sri Kailbhairav Temple Devaramane.
Road quality is very good. But no food or petrol bunks on this route after MW Tower.

Devaramane-Kudahalli - Kottigehara : we didnt wanted to come back from the same route and thus continued on the route from the temple and it ended a in offroad forest route. Offroad was not bad and smooth and can be easily seen that some 4 wheeler would had come in recent days. We continued on this offroad till Kudahalli village from there tarmac was back again and one can easily speed upto Kottigehara.
                                No food option.
Once after reaching Kudahalli one joins back on SH64(Villupuram Mangalore Highway) and there is a petrol bunk on the right on main highway.

Kottigehara - Magundi - Balehonnur - Sringeri - Agumbe: complete route is in very good condition and lot of greenery around with the ongoing monsoon.
                                Agumbe - Kundadri - Mulubagilu - Mani Dam - Mulubagilu - Tirthahalli:
Agumbe to Jogi gundi and Barkan is as usual forest roads with unusual patches and gravel on the single lane road.
Agumbe to Kundadri route is in top condition and one can easily keep good speeds upto Kundadri foothill. Uphill ride is tricky because of narrow single lane roads upto the temple parking.
Back on Agumbe Tirthahalli highway is again in top condition and one can easily maintain triple digits upto Mulubagilu.
Mulubagilu to Mani dam is mixed 2 lane and 1 lane road but to utter amazement this route is also in proper shape and one can easily cruze along in good speeds for next 28 kms all along to Mani dam. We were not allowed to Mani dam by the guard. On the other side of entrance gate there is small road on top of the reservoir wall. One can go to this road to enjoy the scenic beauty of the place.
No food options in this route and no petrol bunks also.

Mulubagilu to Tirthahalli is again as usual described above with next petrol bunk in Tirthahalli.
Tirthahalli - Kuppali - Koppa - Bhadravati - Tarikere - Kadur - Arsikere - Channarayapatna - Bangalore: We wanted to go to Kuppali so took Tirthahalli - Kuppali which is wide 2 lane roads and again one can maintain good high speeds.
Entry road of Kuppali is built and there is new tarmac with broken sign board.
in order to join the NH206 we didnt come back and took Koppa Bhadravati route. This proved out helpful as there was very less traffic in evening and we were able to maintain high speeds to reach Hunasekatte circle. This route is wider 2 lane roads and after Hunasekatte the condition of the road was not good as compared to former part.
After by passing Bhadravati bypass there was heavy traffic as there is road construction work going on after IO petrol bunk and traffic continues uptil Kadur,
Food options only at tarikere and Kadur and petrol bunks all along the way.
From Kadur the road widens up all along Arsikere to Channayarapatna and is in very good condition. One can even maintain triple digits speed on this section even in night.

Overall good ride with heavy rainfall in Malnad and Western Ghats.
