  • Re: Updates On Road Conditions in South India

    Hi guys,

I have planned for a trip to Madurai with my friends for this Thursday.
While I was looking for the route, I could see two routes from Trichy in google maps.
One is NH83(482 KMs), the one people usually tell us to take and the there is another one NH38(448 KMs), a shorter one which google map shows.
This is the first time we people are going for a long ride, so couple of us know only about the NH83 route.
It would be a great help if you guys could help me to know about NH38 and its conditions since it is the shortest route shown on maps which could reduce our ride time.
    Please advice. Thanks in advance.

      Update as on 05.12.2016

      Routte : Bangalore-Karur-Dindigul-Usilampatti -Theni -Bodimettu-Suryanelli- Kolukkumalai-Munnar-Kottakomboor-Munnar-Bison Valley-Usilampatti-Thirumangalam-Virudhnagar-Alagapuri-Rajapalayam-Coutrallam-Ravanasamudram-Papanasam-Kadeyar Dam-Servalar Dam-Manimuthar Dam-Pattamadai-Kalakkad-Vallioor-Kanyakumari-Manapad-Tiruchendur-Toothukudi-Vaipar-Sayalgudi-Kilakarai-Regunathapuram-Mandapam-Rameshwaram-Dhanushkodi-Ramanathapuram-Devipattinam-Mimisal-Muthupettai-Voimedu-Vedaranyam-Point Calimere-Velankanni-karaikal-Chidambaram-Cuddalore-Puducherry-Auroville-Mammallapuram-Chennai-Sriperumbadur-Vellore-Krishnagiri-Bangalore.

Bangalore-Dindigul : Good to Very good Roads.

Dindigul -Usilampatti : Good Two lane roads, Expect some senseless traffic around Usilampatti .

Usilampatti-Munthal: Good to very good Two lane roads.

Munthal-Bodimetu: the ghats are in brilliant condition, all thanks to less rains this year.

Bodimetu-BL Ram-Muthuvan Kudi-Suryanelli : Narrow roads, broken at few places, Sharp inclines/Declines Initially. The roads get better as you are closing in towards Chinnakanal/Suryanelli .

Suryanelli -Kolukkumalai: There are 2 routes from Suryanelli. First, the conventional Jeep Route, Second Proceed about 3-4 from where the Jeeps deviate(Towards Muthuvan Kudi) , a left turn takes you towards Shanmughavilasam Estate, which eventually connects to the jeep trail 4kms before Kolukkumalai. Trails on either stretches are Bad, the Shanmugam vilasam is narrower, Deserted traffic and marginally tougher than the Jeep trail. Apart from that, everything else is almost the same.

Chinnakanal-Munnar-Kottakomboor: Chinnakana to Munnar, as usual very narrow roads for two way traffic but road conditions are good. After munnar is such a relief. As much as possible start early from Munnar to Top Station to avoid traffic. Otherwise it will be like Bangalore traffic at certain sections.

Munnar-Bison Valley-Mangathotty-Pooppara-Chinnakannal : Good narrow roads for most part of it. The gap road decline is steep at many places.

Usilampatti- Checkanurani -Thirumangalam(Bypass)-Virudhnagar : Decent two lane roads till Tirumangalam by pass. Post Tirumangalam, its good four lane roads.

Virudhnagar-Alagapuri-Rajapalayam-Coutrallam-Ravanasamudram: Good two lane roads throughout, expect some traffic near Rajapalayam and Srivilluputhur. Apart from that , the entire stretch is a breeze.

Ravanasamudram-Papanasam-Mundanthurai-Kadeyar Dam-Servalar Dam: Ravanasamudram to Papanasam decent two lane roads. Papanasam to Mundanthurai, narrow ghat roads. Good roads to Kadeyar Dam. Mundanthurai Range office to Servalar Dam is broken.

Papanasam-Mundanthurai-Kalakkad-Nanguneri : Papanasam to Kallidaikuruchi Roads are broken for most parts of it. Post that its decent two lane roads all the way till Nanguneri.

Nanguneri-Vallioor-Kanyakumari : Good four lane roads.

Kanyakumari -Kundankulam-Manapad-Tiruchendur: Road widening under way at many places. wherever the work is done, it forms one beautiful stretch to ride through.

Tiruchendur -Toothukudi(By pass)-Vaippar : Average to good roads. Road Widening underway at Few places. The closer you get to tootukudi, truck traffic increases because of proximity to the port. Once you bypass Toothukudi its good roads after good roads. This stretch gets too windy at times.

Vaippar -Vembar-Sayalgudi-Kilakarai-Reghunathapuram-Rameshwaram-Dhanushkodi : Good Roads good roads good roads. Two laned roads throughout.

      Rameshwaram-Ramanathapuram: Good roads as usual.

Ramanathapuram- Thondi-Mimisal-Manamelkudi-Adirampattinam-Voimedu-Vedaranyam : Good scenic two lane Roads. Can spot a lot of birds enroute.

Vedaranyam-Velankanni: Newly laid two lane roads.

Velankanni-Chidambaram-Cuddalore-Puducherry: Good two lane roads overall. Traffic congestion(Due to Trucks mainly) can be seen on Cuddalore-Puducherry stretch.

Puducherry-Chennai: Mix or Narrow two lane to Wide four lane roads. Most of this stretch is scenic and good roads.

Chennai-Vellore-Krishnagiri-Bangalore : Good four lane throughout , with undulations in some sections from chennai to Ranipet Toll booth.

      • Updates on road conditions or alternate routes

        Hello XBhpian's,

I'll be travelling to Kerala (Cherai/Munambam) on the 5th or 6th of Jan, I'm very used to NH44 & NH544 road, which at times gets a little boring on the 4 lane highway, I was thinking of taking a different route say something like this Bangalore-Nanjanagudu-Bandipur-Gudalur-Nilambur-Pattambi-Guruvayur-Cherai, anyone who has any other routes or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

PS : I need to reach my destination by max 3:30PM - 4:00PM

PSS : I'm planning to leave Bangalore by 2:30 AM

        Regards,
        Jillton

I took Hyderabad - bhootpur-Raichur-Gangavathi-koppal-gadag-hubali-yellapur-gokarna route while going and took Gokarna-yellapur-hubali(bypas)-gadag-koppal-hospet-bellari-guntakal-gooty-NH7 to Hyderabad.
Roads are good I did gokarna-Hyderabad in 12-13 hrs with ample breaks, but beware of speed breakers in Karnataka( They are lot more and unmarked and at unexpected places), rest you will enjoy ghat roads ( very very beautiful roads), there are very cheap 300 rs hotels at Om beach but you have to park your bike at a place and go down by stairs and then on sand to reach those. There is a good 3 star hotel ( first one at OM beach) with parking you can go there and ask there are plenty hotels, but place is beautiful , secluded and peaceful.Have a safe and joyful ride mate.

                  • Chennai to Mangalore via Bangalore

                    Hi xBhpians,

I plan to ride from Chennai to Mangalore on the 23rd of March on my RE Bullet 500. I'm planning the ride over 2 days with a stop at Bangalore since I'd like to negotiate the western ghats during the day and also because I'd like to meet friends in Bangalore before proceeding to a family jamboree of sorts in Mangalore.

My main concern is the routing from Bangalore to Mangalore via Hassan. I've heard that the Shiradi Ghat isn't in the best of shape and that Sakleshpur now has a gang of sorts operating in the vicinity. It seems Shiradi Ghat has been on the mend for over a year now with no progress.

i would love any input from you'll regarding the same as well as any sort of knowledge, route prep you'll could impart me with or think is necessary.

                    Thanks in advance.

                      .
Had been on a ride to Sakleshpur and back recently. Road from Sakleshpur to about 3/4ths of the Shiradi Ghats is smooth and well marked. Thereafter, for the last 10-15 kilometers, it's in the worst possible condition that a road could be. After that bad stretch, the road is in decent shape until BC Road, from where the 4-laned road starts. You can do average speeds of 40-45kmph in the better part of the Ghats, 20-25kmph in the battered section, 60-70kmph thereafter upto Mangalore.

Regarding the 'gang', I've never heard of any such gang till date. It's pretty safe with a lot of vehicles around, 24 hours a day.

Here's the video that shows the battered section of the Shiradi Ghat.

You also have the Bangalore-Mysore- Madikeri-Mangalore route as an option ,if you don't mind the traffic on Bangalore- Mysore section ,the road condition is good ,specially the ghats are great ,may take slightly longer time than sakleshpur route.

I believe this route is just about 30km longer than the sakleshpur route. How is the traffic and the ghat section in general? Tricky Ghat section??
