75rs per liter for petrol is not possible, don't worry. Congress has to win elections in future too, so don't worry about so much increase. I think the strategy here is to frighten people about a 25rs hike, then give 5rs hike and say 'see, because of me the hike was only 5rs'! common tactic to fool common public.

Relax guys. As expected, deregulation has met with widespread opposition. The government is not trying to bring down the margin subsidy by hiking prices by Rs.3 or so a litre.

i think this time petroleum prices will be based on market prices of crude oil...what will happen if crude jumps to 120 dollars per barrel?

Petroleum Minister Murli Deora, holding a press conference on Friday afternoon (June 25), shortly after the end of the meeting of the Empowered Group of Ministers (EGoM)said the Government had been forced to deregulate petrol prices "in the larger interests of the nation."
"The underrecovery (subsidisation) for this year is expected to be 7,000 cr. It was felt that an increase in price of petrol can be easily accomodated by the user in the country. It was estimated that if the price of petrol was market driver the average user of the motorcar would not be spending more than Rs 190 extra every month, while the user of the two-wheeler would not spend more than Rs 30-35 every month, so since the price is reasonable being market determined, it can be easily be accomodated by the petrol users."
"The second decision is on diesel - the EGoM decided price of Diesel would also be market drven. However for the present the diesel price wil be increased only by Rs 2 - even though ultimatey the price of diesel will be market-driven. If the EGoM had not done this, underrecovery would have been in the order of Rs 23,000 cr, a burden which upstream oil companies and and the Government cannot bear. However, to ease the burden of the full impact the EgoM has decided that the price will increase only be by Rs 2."
