    Dear Rachit

Congrats on your helmet. I own an Avenger 220 cruise and having a Studds Ninja 3G model. Its around 5 years old and I want to purchase a new helmet so that I can get used to it before my Leh trip in 2021.

My budget is around 4k and I saw the Shiro 821 model which is good but I still need suggestions from experts. Kindly do give your opinion.

I don't mind having dual visors. I prefer the visors to be scratch resistant and if it has pinlock it would be a real boon. Will I get one in the 4k range? Please guide.

So finally after a wait and want of 4 years, I finally got the courage to upgrade to my dream helmet. I bought my CBR 4.5 years back, and my research on better helmets started then. I was using a Bell Vortex at that time which was a perfectly fine helmet, matched perfectly with my bike's color scheme too, but I wanted something nicer.

I think roughly this was the time when Shoei launched their new flagship in the form of X-14. I read the reviews and really liked it. About 4 years back, I got an opportunity to travel to US, which I used very well to buy some good riding gear for me. During that time, I got to try a Shoei X-14 in one of the shops and absolutely fell in love with how it felt. My wait for a possible discount or a price drop started then.

Over the years, I tried many helmets but for some reason or the other never felt as good as that Shoei had felt on my head. Being a Rossi fan, the desire for an AGV was always there, I have huge respect for ARAI and I absolutely loved the interiors of my Bell. Tried many helmets, some at shops, some with friends but that Shoei was bloody stuck in my head.

To make matters worse, Marc is the ambassador for Shoei and he starts wining championships left right and center. The net result, any dream of mine of seeing a discount or a price drop on this helmet went down the drain.

I check this helmets price every week on Revzilla. Rather than going down, it actually went up. To make matters worse, Dollar became stronger by 10 Rs as compared to Rupee in the last 4 years. What was a 40ish K helmet was a 60ish K helmet today.

Then is the challenge of bringing it from the US. Helmet is one of the toughest things to carry in flights if its not your own. You would be sacrificing relations/friendships by asking anyone to bring your helmet. I tracked prices in Singapore, UK and USA. But could never gather the courage to pull the trigger mostly because of price and then didn't want to screw anybody else travel because of my helmet.

This year my Bell was almost touching 7 years now, which is generally the recommended end of serviceable life of a helmet. I was quite bored of it and it was starting to become a bit loose too. This particular color them is named Bring TC-1. This color scheme I think came around a couple of years back and ever since I saw it, I was a complete fan. Although I dont like very bright colorful things, but this theme just stole my heart. This year the want of the helmet was really big. Most websites in US and Singapore had this color theme as sold out and I really feared that it might be on its way out. However most UK websites had it in stock still.

The savior came in the form of bikegear.in. They had this helmet listed at 65K, which was exactly equal to its US price. The added benefit was I would get it in its box properly packed and wouldn't have to sacrifice any relation for it. I could convert the charges into EMI as well. I pinged bikegear and their entire communication and service was top notch. They gave me a discount of 2K. I ordered the extra dark smoke visor as well, which had a discount of 1K. So total 63+6K for the helmet and the extra visor.

They had initially committed me 3 weeks of delivery time, but the helmet was in my hands in flat 8 days from ordering. I think they get it directly from Shoei in Japan and the day they got the helmet in Pune, I had it the very next day. Overall an excellent experience with them and would highly recommend these guys.

    Now coming to the helmet:
Most reviews say it is one of the more comfortable and plush race helmets and I would agree. The quality of interior and feel on your cheeks is really likeable. I had become very fussy of how a helmet feels on your face maybe because my Bell was quite plush. It is tight fit helmet, but does not feel too tight. The quality of the thing is just top notch. You hold it and you know it is a premium helmet. The thickness of the shield, the tight indents that it goes through when opening and closing, the feel of the vents and switches is all very tight and well machined. In terms of features and headlines, I agree this helmet lacks a bit to the more modern competitors but in terms of fit and finish it is right up there.

I have only ridden in it 1 weekend, but the initial impressions are good. It feels snug and stable. The wind noise is fairly well controlled and the ventilation can really be felt. Fits true to size.

SMK is a genuinely worth competitor and gives a run for most of the similar or higher priced helmets. Wind noise is negligible and fit and finish is excellent for a helmet of this budget. Hope you have the clear visor with the pinlock on.

Good helmets. Are ECE certified and whatever helmets you buy from abroad, make sure you get two plain visors as stock. Visors can be pretty expensive when purchased individually.

Rest assured, they're a good helmet, on par with HJC and the likes.

    Cheers!

From both of your opinions, I have come to the following conclusions.
MT if I want a lid immediately (which I don't)
SMK titan if I can wait. (Which I am going to)

However, do you know the timeline for its availability? (Has it released? SMK's Instagram page makes it look like it's released)

Also most if not all SMK dealers in Chennai know only of SMK twister, one guy even asked me if there was something called SMK force. I don't know why.

Also does anyone know where to find the manufacturing date on an LS2? I have been calculating it's its age since I bought it in 2017 and not from when it was manufactured. So I maybe wrong.

    Edit:
To find the manufacturing date on a LS2:
It can be found under the red mesh lining which itself is under the top padding of the helmet. To access it you have to remove the top padding and a part of the red mesh lining(be very careful) you can re stick the red mesh if you want to.
Atleast this is how it is on my model (FF320)

    Thanks for your help guys.

Availability of spares and better aftersales - SMK

Better fit and finish - MT (very slightly), infact SMK Force has a beautiful carbon-like finish on inner plastics.

Pinlock - Both support Pinlock 70, SMK comes with Pin30 pre-installed. (you need to buy a new visor for SMK to fit pin70)

Safety - Both are ECE certified. There is no bonus in DOT and it's not needed either.

Chinstrap - Both get a micrometric ratcheting buckle now. Older MT lids used to get a double D ring closure.

Inner sunvisor - Best on SMK Force.

Visor and padding prices - SMK is priced lesser, infact half or lesser, same for Pinlock sheet pricing, ratchets and so on.

Availability of chin vent, top vents etc (important for a daily, long term user) - SMK sells these, MT doesn't.

My advice - You can wait for SMK Titan if the purchase is not very urgent.

    Goodluck.

Users of Sena/vnet and the like, which has the battery on the outside of the helmet.
In case of a crash, how safe would the battery be? All of these use Lithium technology batteries and they are prone for fires if mishandled.
Have you ever had a crash(god forbid) with something that has a battery on the outside of the helmet?
    What happened then?
I'm building a DIY light setup for the helmet and using a li-ion battery and that's why this question.

Now why I don't include action cameras here is, because they have these shockproof cases.

Also, I'm trying to select a new helmet.
I read a lot on the SMK twister and almost decided on it, but now am confused between 4 models:
    SMK twister
    SMK force/force steel
    MT thunder 3
    MT blade 2

I can stretch my budget to 8k.

    My requirements are:
    Speaker pockets
    Internal sun visor
Comfortable for touring (say 3-4 hours without removing the helmet)
    Mounting an action cam
Either the d ring or the ratchet is okay.
Also ECE certified is enough I feel. DoT/SHARP is an added bonus.
The pinlock offered by SMK is VFM. But I dont mind spending another 1300-1500 for a pinlock insert to give it up for protection of my head.
    Graphics don't matter either.
    Please help me choose.
Been breaking my head over this last few hours.
I use an LS2 FF320. (As mentioned earlier)
So would the SMK be a downgrade?

Smk force is upper model than twister, both the mts are better than smk twister blade is good but i need pinlock 70 over the helmet as antifog. Smk comes fitted with pinlock 30.
And ECE is any day better than DOT , dot is like isi it is a honor certification like a self certification following the guide lines. Ece is more stringent and sharp is also good and better than dot.
Smk twister has some wind noise entering from left side particularly the are of the inner visor mechanism.

Try the SMK website, various models show bluetooth compatibility.

I tried in amazon and also online but couldn’t find any with the provision to fix my intercom. I am looking to primarily use it in city and Chennai gets really hot during the day. For the summers i ll really need those half face helmets and i plan to switch my intercoms whenever i need to.
    Thanks
