• Re: Helmets

Been following this thread for a while now.
I've decided to get myself a new lid after using an AXOR(Vega) helmet for almost an year. I ride an RC 390 and for some reason I cheaped out on a helmet.
I'm looking for a helmet around Rs. 5000-6000, I know it's still low, but I'm on a budget.
Safety and Durability are my primary requirements. Would love a helmet with less wind noise but that may be too much to ask at this price range.
I've shortlisted HJC CS-R2, SOL SF5, SOL 68S/68SII. I've tried these on and XL just fits me. It's snug.
Can someone please help me pick up one of these?
Thank You.

Are the SOLs not heavy !!! Also the MT Blade series for that money are lighter (not cheaper). Just my opinion ....
I rode around with a Studds Scorpion for almost 4 years now. It has been a good companion on all my long rides.

But it was never my size ... it was two sizes bigger. And yes I bought it that way as I was naive and only cared about the design.

It did serve its purpose well. But the incessant nag to get a helmet of my size was ... getting irritating to be honest.

Bike O Pedia, Hyderbad had MTs in stock and was very close to my home and work. They are also official Spartan Dist for Hyd.

The visit was for one very special helmet ... Kranos Imola Born2Win. It is ECE R.22.05 and DOT Dual homologated and weights in at 1350-1450.

Rode for 3

Let the pictures speak for themselves on the design front.

Hey guys,

After reading this thread for quite sometime, I find that everyone seems to want a helmet that is DOT certified. This is really surprising. Although I'm no expert at helmets or safety, after simple searching about DOT on the internet, I found that DOT is possibly one of the worst certifications to rely on. DOT is honor based which means that any manufacturer can sell their products with a DOT certification without actually getting a certification before-hand. In other words, if I manufacture a helmet and I "feel" that this confirms to DOT standards, I can use the DOT certification sticker on my helmet. So, banking on that DOT certification is one of the biggest blunders any one purchasing a helmet can do.

"DOT stands for Department of Transportation. The standard is FMVSS 218 for Motorcycle Helmets. The DOT/FMVSS218 standard is considered an honor based system as the manufacturer decides whether or not their helmets meet the certification requirements. Helmets with DOT certification may not be actively tested for compliance to the standards as it is up to the manufacturer to decide whether a helmet is safe enough to be sold as DOT certified." - from here.

Guys, when you are spending money on a safety equipment, please be advised that not all DOT helmets will protect you. If you are really looking to be safe, look for the following international standards which actually care about safety:

:: Europe - ECE
:: Japan - JIS
:: USA - Snell

Please stop running behind DOT. It makes no sense.

Do NOT go for a cheap chinese wire, it goes out in days / weeks or if lucky might last 2-3 months! As it is a permanent modification to your helmet, i suggest go with Lightfury Mod Kit, cheaper than Lightmode, but excellent quality, been using it for quite a while now

I would suggest MT helmet, starts at 4150 - Made in Spain - excellent quality for that price

I find that lightfury is way too expensive. I wouldn't mind paying around a thousand bucks but in 4k you get a brand new helmet.

.

Yes and no.

For every helmet sold in the USA, the manufacturer can be fined us $ 5000 per helmet, if they mislabel their product. And DOT does carry out random tests, by buying a lid from the market, so that the manufacturer involvement is limited. So this acts as a deterrent to various manufacturers.

However, lets say that there are two helmets, say Brand X's model Y and Brand X Model Z.

Model X = Conforms to DOT, sold in USA
Model Y = Does not conform, sold in India.

In this case, the USA govt can take no action, and it clearly amounts to spreading false information, which is clearly what Vega Helmets is doing. >still waiting for the guy who said his Boolean is DOT to give me evidence<

But say, a helmet, like say, Brand A Model B, which is sold in USA and is DOT. And the SAME helmet is sold in India, there is little reason to suspect it. Ofcourse it is an altogether different issue whether or not the helmets sold are the same >for example the LS2 controversy, on which I incidentally, have ABSOLUTELY NO OPINION to give<

So yes, to dismiss a standard as worthless is taking things a little too far.

No offence guys, but you people are talking like why one should buy an Arai or AGV when a chinese LS2 is available
maddiemaster How did you stick the wire to your Helmet, can you please tell?
bikerahul The wires are fixed on the helmet using a special helmet adhesive made my lightmode and lightfury, which does not harm or burn the helmet and compromise on its integrity! On the other hand you can but this 250bucks and fix it with feviquick and it will burn your helmet and compromise on safety, I am sure you wouldnt want that.

Apart from the main point, these things are CE FC & RoHS compliant, makes them quality product. Both brands provide 1 year parts replacement warranty. Both brands have done good amount of R&D and developed their own systems, so lets give them some credit! Afterall 'QUALITY' is something and it comes at a price.
Though everything will look same to one's eye, but you cannot compare a 60K iPhone with a 6K Intex Aqua they are not the same

Frankly I feel weird when people spend 60K on a iPhone then start looking for a chinese rs.100 cover to safeguard their 60K investment.

Do not take this as a show-off item, it greatly increases one's visibility and safety on night rides. Thats all the info I got you can of course do as you please
