  • re: Universal : Riding Gear Thread

I really don't need to put up an already reviewed product but I must drop my expression after riding through a few busy evenings across the traffic in Delhi.

There is no better option for a knee protection than a SPG Perseus at the 2.5k price point ........... super light and super dry fit beneath your jeans.

P.S. You will only realize that 2.5k is a reasonable amount for a good knee guard instead to bear the trouble of a swelled knee for a few months (under the prescription of a physio) even after healing of the wounds suffered during an accident.

You should first of all look out for a good and recommended helmet to make sure that you live with your crown for many days to come . After ensuring this point it is always appreciated to purchase a riding jacket, gloves, knee guards and riding boots to begin with.

The motorcycle riding jacket type which mostly suits the Indian climate is of "Mesh Type". Try picking the one which has better mesh vents and as I know a little of Nagpur it is seriously hot. Furthermore, the riding jackets, these days, have liners to keep you good through different temperatures.

For Summer, use the mesh jacket as it is.
For Winter, use the winter liner that comes along with the jacket.
For Rains, buy a plus size rain wear and wear it over you riding jacket.

Also do you guys have any experience with the KTM powerwear? The website has no mention of pricing, is it available at the KTM showrooms?
    These look good:
KTM STREET EVO JACKET 14 - Jackets - Street - Functional - PowerWear
KTM VENTED JACKET - Jackets - Street - Functional - PowerWear
    KTM RADICAL X GLOVES WHITE 14 - Gloves - Street - Functional - PowerWear
I have not yet come across any review of the items listed by you and thereby expect fellow bikers to drop their opinions.

P.S. @B7ACKTHORN Sir, have you put up that thread for newbies about basic riding terms, brands and all ?

Thanks for the reply. I already put in a query for a good helmet in the helmet thread but no replies so far. And yeah my budget of 15k is only for the rest of the gear excluding the helmet.

I would be glad to have some specific stuff recommended as I don't know what to look for when buying the jackets, gloves etc. I feel that pants, boots and knee guard would be and overkill now because I won't be doing any serious riding in the coming months until I can ride better and my bike is broken in as this is my first experience with a bike that is exclusively mine. I felt buying a good quality jacket and gloves with that 15k now and buy the rest of the stuff down the line as I can save cash for it.

As for this line mate.. There is no overkill in biking world.. Any speeding fool can you hit in foont of your gate or the bike can slip.. There is not way of knowing anything.. So better be safe and get as much as you can..
15k is enough.. A jacket for 6-7k.. Gloves for 2-3k.. And you can buy the rest gear with the money left..

I'm afraid not, pranav. It's not just the thread, but I have lots of reviews unanswered for many people, and I haven't started on anything as of yet. Pure laziness! But will start on them, plus quite busy these days, toggling between work and life. Phew!

But that being said the CRAMSTER TR2G full gauntlet glove is a choice to consider at 2600 bucks it's pretty good on the pocket

But the DSG Primal has been tried and tested and at 2750 it's a good deal.

But I'd suggest you go for DSG Primal, if you're inclined towards the budget stuff. Else look none other than Cramster, purely on your budget basis.

Can someone shed some light on the Keprotec fabric that is used in these gloves? They are giving up. My glove is just about 6-7 months old, and also I dont use these for daily commute. Only weekend rides, twice a month. Also, I remember reading here how it gave up only within a month's use on some riders' glove. Especially the part between thumb and Index finger.

Keptrotec is nothing but a blend of Kevlar and other space-age fibers that more or less equal to the performance of leather like abrasion and tear resistance, indeed Kevlar is crowned as the best synthetic material man has ever made and is used in almost heavy-duty stuffs from motorcycle apparel, military gear, shoes, bullet proof vests, astronaut suit you name anything that needs the strength and capability of a leather but which is easy to take care of and offers flexibility of a textile component. Well enough of introduction. Genuine Keprotec won't give away that easily. i.e. rip or tear, but if you have issues with stitching that may be of poor workmanship. But genuine Keprotec lasts *really* long.

BTW which glove brand are you using and if you can take a snap of it perhaps we can help.

I disagree ............. it will be real sad when they do not acknowledge your complain and avoid a reply/explanation. A product/machine may fail anytime, even immediately after purchase as it may had missed through the quality checking at the factory

I will reply in several points in order:

                        Jackets

                        1. Dedicating a budget of 15k for a riding Jacket and a pair of gloves is good with a honest promise to buy the rest gears is super-good.

                        2. Next thing that my inner self always speaks to me when buying "any" product is "buy from the expert". By "expert" it means the guys who are dedicatedly in the business. If I am in the business of a making a motor-bike then I will offer riding gears developed according to it (keeping the bike as priority and gears as the followers).

                        3. With that said I would recommend you to put your earnest money on a brand which makes gears seriously without worrying about any bike. It will offer relatively better features and the product will have a lot of users across the biking community.

                        4. So my choice in order is (click to catch the link): SPG HYPERION upgraded to Sas-Tec back protector (all black color), SPG HELIOS upgraded to Sas-Tec back protector (Orange theme), DSG RAGE JACKET in orange.

                        5. Make sure that if you are buying a SPG Jacket you choose a winter liner over the rain liner (yes, you can make a choice for SPG Jackets). Why ? because the rain liner are good only for light drizzle. For rains you may use a size bigger rainwear over the jacket.

                        6. DSG Rage in orange is missing on the website of DSG so click here to contact them if they can make it available to you. I have listed the names of jackets in order of priority purely based upon the armor and material used + the super positive reviews received from users.

                        7. This one http://shop.ktm.com/in_en/powerwear/...ed-jacket.html looked good but they have not given much details about the product. I suggest you should request some fellow xBhp-ian in Nagpur to go with you to check out this product at the shop. Find someone here http://www.xbhp.com/talkies/xbhp-off...2g-thread.html

                        Gloves

                        8. Gloves are generally in three form-types, namely short cuff, semi-gauntlet and full-gauntlet. For City use you may get short cuff as well as semi-gauntlet. In short Cuff you may choose from SPG Pegasus, Cramster Blaster & Cramster Flux ........... all these are good choose as per your liking and all. Again for sizing you should contact them.

                        9. For semi gauntlet you have some really wonderful options: (there is no order again, all are good) RJays Canyon, RYNOX Kombat, SPG Centaur, Cramster Twister & DSG Revive

                        Knee Guards and some more

                        10. As per my calculation you will have some savings in your stated budget of helmet and then you may fo ahead to afford a few more things mostly knee guards. This space is alone dominated by SPG Perseus and is a super cool product to live with.

                        11. Buy a balaclava too here's one link for easy reference

Please feel free to quote me back for any point and keep fueling that biker-spirit arising in you

                        Warm Regards,

For the riding jackets i checked out the ones you mentioned. I will also check out the KTM ones. I had one more question how do the jackets and gloves from alpinestars on the DSG website compare to the ones you mentioned?
Alpinestars Viper Air Jacket: Black - 14,499.00Rs
Alpinestars SMX-2 Air Carbon Glove: Orange - 4,499.00Rs

I can extend my budget here a bit as i had set side around 8k for the helmet but the SOL helmets seem decent and cost around 5k, so is the alpinestars stuff worth the money or i am better off with the SPG stuff? I ask this because i have heard that the alpinestars makes great riding gear.

@ayu135 - Bro, A* is no doubt a good brand & the quality is top notch. If you have the money, go right ahead & buy it (you do not need to think twice actually). On the other hand, DSG, SPG, Cramster are Indian made by Indian Bikers for the Indian buyers. Let's not take the quality discussion to a different level but be assured, for the money you pay for these brands, it is extremely worth it. And trust me, considering the Indian population, there are many satisfied users of these brands.
