First understand this - For the kind of money that you're spending here, none of the brands/products here can offer a truly waterproof boot. All these brands contract their manufacturing, so you will get very similar looking products because many originate from the same factories. So look for a type differentiation rather than the brand. The Tourmaster/JR look very similar don't they? I've used (and still have) a pair that is very similar and can tell you that these are awesome medium duty touring boots, but definitely not waterproof. I'd call them rainproof, if your riding in rain and careful not to let water in over the top of the boot from your pants. The review about the toes getting damp is spot on until I took the boots to a local cobbler and he simply used some glue to reseal the sole and upper. And voila! Dampness gone!

Very good value if you ask me for a hundred dollar consumer boot. Durable and very comfortable in dry weather. If you want professional performance, be prepared to shell out much more ($400-600) and buy only from dedicated boot companies like SIDI. My regular touring boot is a $500+ SIDI Adventure GoreTex that is both indestructible and completely waterproof even in 1 foot of water but comes at an insane price point.

Waterproof boots unless lined with GoreTex will not be wearable in our steamy climate anyway, unless you like sweat soaked socks. A much cheaper solution is to use boot gaiters which are like waterproof covers for boots that can be purchased separately. These are much cheaper, and will protect your boot from heavy rain but cannot be used for wading in water. Rather ugly too which is why they are not very popular but quite practical.

Also in the description of the product it is mentioned like this.

    "- PVC Free
    - Premium Leather Upper

    - All-encompassing ankle protection cockpit made from TPU and inner foam inserts

    - TPU inserts on the medial and lateral forefoot provides impact protection.

    - Dual Strap Closure

    - Advanced Air Mesh Inner

    btw, Made in Italy."

Can you please explain about this TPU thingy ? I googled it and found out its several uses, it was written it has resistance to abrasion ? any idea how well it fairs in impact resistance ? I mean is it any good ?

    Cheers

Read between the lines. The TPU is thermoplastic polyurethane - basically plastic - bits used inside the shoe to provide some stiffness. As I said, a good pair of ankle high basketball shoes from Adidas will serve the same protection purpose. The only addition is the TPU piece on the top of the shoe to protect it against the gear shifter, which will enhance the life of the shoe. Definitely okay for city riding, and stylish for college but pretty pointless for anything else. For the same money, you can get a dedicated boot from RJays or even spend a bit more for the AStars shorties.

Sure, just needed a bit more understanding about the TPU, so i guess, i will look into Rjays, like you said at this price they have the touring based riding boots which makes more sense i guess, a* shorties meaning the short length ones? Will have a look into them too.

Guys, so whats the review on the A* SM-X 5 riding boots ?

On the Alpinestar website, i am able to see 2 rates the SM-X 5 waterproof to $270 and the ordinary SM-X 5 for $240
And in the Planet DSG website, it is 13,000 and 17,500 for the RS Carbon version, which I can't find in the Alpinestar website.

The ordinary SM-x 5 price comes into range of the one in Planet DSG website, but can't find the waterproof option in the DSG site. Any ideas about this ??

Though to my bad luck ( i suppose ) i got such a pair of gloves, but the service of Rynox is damn good. After i sent them a mail with the pics, i got a call from them and i was told that this chipping off of the layer at some portions shouldn't cause any problem. And they told me to check it for 2 more weeks and revert back to them if the wear is getting increased and they agreed to replace the gloves if it happens. I haven't seen such a service from other sellers.

In all honesty I have not come across this brand before. The generic "type" though is familiar and I have a good guess as to their origin factory, so I'm guessing that for the money they should offer adequate performance. Do not expect SIDI performance though!

With the advent of so many online resellers, I guess this is the good old Aussies, from the very name ozmotorcyclegear, and their Draggin jeans confirms the same. Absolutely no idea about the Xtreme. As many of my friends say, Aussie is a land of bargain, what's sold for $500 for today will be sold for less than $200 the next day. So I can't reiterate about individual brands, as Aussies have lots of self-established motorcycle apparel brands. But if you aren't 100% confident with the product you're intending to purchase, I'd say refrain from it.

Once upon a time, a guy asked a girl 'Will you marry me?'
                    The girl said, 'NO!'

And the guy lived happily ever after and rode motorcycles and watched sport on a big screen TV, went fishing and surfing, and played golf a lot, and drank beer and scotch and had tons of money in the bank and left the toilet seat up and farted whenever he wanted.

I had a fellow biker check them out and he seemed very pleased with it's build quality and comfort, he also said couple of local bikers vouch for the product to be true vfm, however the store that has these on clearance also has the Dainese scout gore tex gloves too for a little over half the price, and now I am more inclined on these as I have been on the lookout for the same

At almost 10.5k after conversion, dont you think you have better/equally good jackets available locally such as SPG Hyperion , RJAYS jetstream 2 or even RJAYS octane 2, AGV jackets are pretty good too.

                          Just my thoughts...

Although I don't have extensive experience with riding gears, I have been using REV'IT Airwave Jacket for about an year. It's almost similar to the Tarmac Air (except Tarmac Air's specification mentions cowhide in impact protection areas). The jacket's mesh is excellent (for chennai weather) and I only sweat when stationary for more than a few minutes. The Knox elbow & shoulder armour fit snugly (with the right sizing). I had upgraded to Knox TP2 back protector and it covers my upper back (owing to a Size S jacket). I love the Airwave jacket (the white/grey colour requires frequent wash) and pleased with it. The quality is impeccable.

Now, if I were to go back and buy a jacket, I would definitely look at the local offerings (SPG or their RS Taichi import, RJays,et al.) like snehith says, simply because they offer more for the same amount of money you plan to spend. For eg, getting a Helios/Hyperion and upgrade to CE back protection. And if you're close to any of the outlets, you also get to try them out for sizing & fit. It certainly eliminates the tension awaiting the gear you ordered online & hoping it fits you.

That being said, you won't regret getting the REV'IT, but you definitely get more for the money here without compromising on the quality. Hope that helps.
