1. I'm convinced that leather is hotter than mesh/textile. I was wondering if it'd be so hot that it'd be unwearable in the Bangalore heat. I seem to have a strong preference for leather, but I guess I'll surely not go for unperforated leathers. Btw, **what is the difference between mesh and textile?**

2. I'll have a look at the scaphoid sliders you guys mentioned.. I've got some regular Scoyco gloves at the moment. I'll probably think of replacing them later.
Mesh jacket you will be able to use it in Bangalore heat...it provides good airflow while moving and also when you're struck in peak traffic.

Textile is suited more for cold climates...though textile jackets comes with air vent, but it's helpful only while moving... If got struck in peak traffic you sure gonna sweat a lot.

That's more of personal preference, I've no say; since I come from a fire place, I love being under the Sun all day, but hate to even see the sight of snow, but that's me

Before I jump in & answer, I'd suggest going through the below & let us know if you still seek answers

First off, which is a better fabric: textile, or mesh? I will be purchasing a jacket soon and have not decided which to go with. From what I have researched, Textile jackets offer great protection compared to mesh jackets; however, they do not have stellar ventilation (from what I have read). I have no clue either way. So,

Visited the store today. He has a good range of LS2 and Vega Helmets besides another brand called THH. The Vega Axor range was quite good with DOT & ISI certification. The Vega range was all below Rs.3000/-. The LS2 & THH was between Rs.4800/- & Rs.5800/-.
Also checked out a mesh jacket with back, shoulder and elbow protection for Rs.1500/-, a set of knee and elbow guards for Rs.3000/- and gloves for Rs. 1000/-.

Ron Syl,I have to say that the pricing is just vfm.sastec back armour alone costs 2.5k.an upgrade on my Helios.I wish these guys had some exchange offer just for the sake of it so that I could get the tgb jacket.
Well,introductory prices.
It won't be that far when we will start seeing full leather jackets under 15k.

Also post some pics of the removable elbow/shoulder armours. How is the fit of the elbow armor. Is it real snug?adjustability of the same.

Yes, worth an upgrade from nero. i am enjoying this jacket. I have already given feedback to LGU (TBG) about the pocket and the zip tab extension. they said they might fix it in new lots. The MRP is 7.7k i think.

i will try to take pics of the elbow and shoulder armours. they fit just right, also flexible. it seems they get very flexible when they get warm due to the hot weather. have tried bending the guards they way i want, it does work

Absolutely agree; RE will charge premium for their brand name + Helios is a super VFM product; my Helios (version 2) gave up at a little over 47000 Km because of the zipper, otherwise the jacket needs some minor fix at elbow strappers & will still be good for another few 10000 Km. Anyway, I gave up on Helios to try Rynox. Product wise, Rynox can only be compared with Icarus, but then, I decided to go with Rynox this time as I wanted to try out a different brand for experience. But for a daily use, more than Helios, Icarus would do good.

KNOX VS NON KNOX ARMOUR: Aspida vs aspida vs other brands
I've learnt from the forum that Knox is a reputed brand. But I was wondering if non knox armour is also CE approved, then would Knox really provide sufficiently higher protection compared to others to justify its price?
Pretty much any popular brand will charge it's extra premium. It's up to us to determine whether that premium is justified.

Take the case of Aspida Helios (Rs. 6800) vs Aspida Atlas (Rs. 4000) jackets. The following is a chart comparing their features. Should I really pay the extra Rs 2800 or instead spend this money elsewhere?

Also any other better options in this range (Rs. 4-7K)? What's the lowest for armoured leather jackets?

Brilliant comparison & well researched. From my 4 jackets owned so far, first thing that comes to my mind is the QUALITY; quality here, is not just the material, but the stitching, construction & engineering. Now one has to understand that the armors have a shelf life. This means, the armors have the ability to get into powdered blocks after few years. This has happened to me with my Joe Rocket & Power Trip (yet to happen with Knox Helios, which now found shelters with Rynox)

Next point is about, the extra features that Helios offers; trust me, I'm missing those 2 internal pockets on my Rynox now The waterproof zippered pocket with Helios has saved my phone & wallet countless times even when I was completely drenched from toe to foot, they remained functional.

Otherwise, the hook etc are something good to have, but I haven't used them so far, but yes, nice to have such features.

Going back to the question on are the armors really worth for that price? Well, yes, I own a knox knee guard as well despite they costed a bomb. And if you like to know why Knox is still worth, pls check out my post here - http://www.xbhp.com/talkies/universa...ml#post1135289

Hey, thanks for your reply TranquilRage. Actually there's a horizontal scrollbar at the bottom of the comparison. If you scroll right you'll see the Atlas too I just put the Icarus in there because I found that one too. I've tried on the Helios and I found it to be fairly nice, haven't yet seen the other two though.

Do you have any sources on knox armour scoring ~47% higher than CE. For what material, in what test, under what conditions?

Are there any academic sources for popular opinions about gear?
The reason I request them is because personal experience might not encompass the kind of rigorous testing that would actually be required to label a piece of gear as effective or not. Thus, without a scientific method critically questioning certain beliefs, unsubstantiated opinions might get enshrined as gospel.

For example, in the US, there were similar debates about BICYCLE helmets, where newer brands kept making taller and taller claims about the benefits of their new tech, and about the inadequacy of standard tech, till the Bicycle and Helmet safety institute (Helmets: Bicycle Helmets) published their results demonstrating that for cycles, $20 helmets offer just as much protection as $200 ones. I'm not aware of how much the figures change when we come to motorcycle level impact protection requirements.

I would be really grateful if anyone could point to such similar research, or primary sources, because I've been looking around and haven't found anything truly satisfactory.

PS: What led me to that page: http://bicycles.stackexchange.com/qu...ensive-helmets
_____

I found these studies demonstrating the effect of gear and Gear+body armour vs no gear. You guys might find it interesting.

But I haven't yet found anything talking about specific technologies like knox vs non knox. Or rubber/foam type armour vs rigid armour for shoulders/elbows/back.

Hey, does anyone have any idea about ADV Breed from TBG?
How do those compare to the Helios?
From what i noticed, ADVbreed had nice armor around the shoulders and elbows but they seemed uselessly thin around the rest of the body, so i don't know how good their abrasion resistance would be.
Having said that, they looked good and body hugging.

Any more information?

Hi all

I am looking for riding boots and all the big names (A*s, Dainese) boots are costly.. Anyways I would like to go ahead with purchasing them instead of opting for VFM boots. Here are my requirements
1. Should be usable for everyday ride.. I do not prefer the racing boots
2. Preferably waterproof and also should be comfortable for Bangalore temperatures (32-34 deg C)
3. Should have good ankle (both medial and lateral)/toe/heel protection.. Shin protection preferable (this adds to costs again )

Based on my above requirements I have shortlisted the below boots
1. AlpineStars SMX3 - 15K INR - My foot is a bit wide and I find size 43 okay. It doesn't have good lateral ankle protection or shin protection.. Otherwise its a great boot I feel
2. Dainese asphalt C2B - 17K INR - not waterproof but really comfortable has good ankle protection (lateral and medial). However no shin protection. Doesnt do much to arrest any lateral movement of feet.
3. Dainese nighthawk c2 goretex - 17K INR - I have not tried these but I heard these are waterproof, not good for temperatures above 90degF.. Heard it has nylon inserts at ankle(lateral and medial) and also has a shin protector

I am unable to choose between the above 3 products.. Suggestions on above products / alternate options will be really helpful ...
