Very nicely detailed regarding obstacles and handling...

    Others can contribute too...

Check for testing results regarding speeds shown at the end of the document, you can match them up with Indian Bike speeds too.

      • @Shrinath: It is very much possible to maneuver at 100kmph to avoid obstacles. But it depends on the rider's reflexes (read muscle memory). So the best way to learn is to do it, albeit at a slower speed. Start off at say...50kmph. Then go on increasing your speed by 10kmph as you gain experience of counter steering at these speeds. However, please do read up on counter steering as well as vision. It is your vision that will save ur ass in a situation where you have to swerve to avoid something rather than your riding skill. If you can "SEE" a way out clearly, it will be easier for you to take action and maneuver your bike out of trouble. And lastly, the R15 can take anything, any speed. In most cases its the rider that is a limiting factor. Hope this helps.

one of the MUST-DO items on my list every year -- but never materialises as long tour is done in nov-dec than jan becomes too early for leaves

last year was the best in terms of affordability I guess

True that. 16 grand for 3 days of fun on the track was well worth it. They just HAD to spoil the fun now

The first time I actually felt counter-steering doing its thing... I was doing 130+ on Mysore-Bangalore highway (And really didn't want to slow down for a lonnng sweeeping corner). Before that happened, all the time I used to wonder.. 'Yeh kya bawaal hai counter-steering jidhar handle modo udhar mudti hai.. usme naya kya hai?' even though I had read about it a thousand times(exaggeration used, kindly excuse).

Moral of the story: The basic thing about counter-steering is, to really feel it happen, you have to go fast. But as long as your conscious mind doesn't how it happens, you will never be able to go fast... Vicious cycle.

Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

              • @ Antz - are you suggesting that Shrinath should try contersteering at 130 kmph ?
Never argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and then beat you with experience.

                  My 2 cents..Since its a personal experience.

Counter-steering can also be experienced in turns which have wide exits, that is exactly when you entered a narrow turn which is banking inside but has an exit which is quite wide open ( this is the time where you pin the throttle) during this activity the handle will be pointing or rather aiming in the opposite direction of the turn. Speeds, the faster the better....

Apart from counter-steering I also work on the vision part when there is a sudden obstacle in between. I agree with Ritwik, if you seen an escape route then go for it in such scenarios. Rest leave it on the brain as it will automatically trace the path after your vision is locked on the escape route.
Sudden braking will send you flying, be it 130 or even 50-60 kmph (Since most of us do not have ABS, Atleast I dont)....

Also dont keep looking all the time at pin stripes which keep passing, look around too especially intersections and lane starts...These are areas where intrusion can be expected and have overall control of bike too.

                  • Take a Royal Enfield and try chase Sagar. Thats the easiest way to try all the steers!

CounterSteer - Happens in almost all turns if you can make it to come back and read this :P
Oversteer - Happens in some tight corners
Understeer- Happens in what looked like the everyday cake walk corner

Nice to to see sensible posts back on the thread!

I am doing it but at low speeds and its observed when i do consciously i brake a bit, but otherwise when i am doing unconsciously i downshift and do it and those times my bike makes me feel i am gonna touch my shoulder on ground its so fast.
