        • About helmets

As some incidents have been mentioned about accidents due to helmet disuse, let me tell my friends, especially the young and less mature ones about not one but two.

The first was circa 1999. I was at the Infantry School, Mhow when I heard of a young officer having died of severe head injuries. Apparently, two officers were riding at night from from the Infantry School to the Army War College. The time was 0130h. The rider WAS wearing a lid, his pillion was not. Both officers had had more than adequate alcohol. When close to the War College gates, the rider braked suddenly, the bike, then at about 80 kmph, fishtailed and threw off both riders. The helmeted chap hit his head on the road, the helmet fractured and he suffered bruising of the shoulders and knees. THAT'S ALL. But... the naked guy hit his head on the gate (as he had been thrown off higher), his skull split open like a walnut and he was dead BEFORE HIS BODY TOUCHED THE GROUND. There was so much blood on the road that the particular spot had to dug up and the road resurfaced. This patch is still there, about 25 odd metres from the gate. This man had been engaged on that very day, had been a regimental officer and a good friend... RIP.

The second was circa 2001 when I had been admitted to the Command Hospital in Chandigarh to undergo a knee surgery.

I was walking down the corridor using my crutches when I saw a youngster chatting with his friend. Now, I had been approaching the scene from the left side of this young man. When I reached the spot and carried on, I heard the friend laugh so I turned around. What I saw was not a pretty sight. The entire right side of the youngster's face was missing - the top part of the skull, the right eye, cheek, part of the nose. As if someone had cut it off clean. He told me the story over a cup of tea (hospitals have nothing stronger for patients...) Again, he had been riding WITH a helmet but with a difference - the said helmet was firmly secured in a helmet clasp on the pillion grab rail. Approaching a turn, the bike skidded, the rider was thrown off onto a truck which dragged him for just about 20 odd metres with his head hammering against a tall divider between the two lanes (similar to what one sees in Mumbai, only taller). One side of his head was reduced to a pulpy jelly. Readers can deduce the scene more graphically. He has suffered permanent brain damage, lost an eye, has had to undergo (at the time I met him) 15 reconstructive surgeries just to make him appear more human and is a shadow of his former self.

I have NEVER, EVER ridden a two wheeler (from my dad's Vespa 150 in the late '70s till my CBR 250 of today) without a helmet more to retain my sentience as a human being than any fear of regulations or Death.

          Helmets protect lives. "Nuff said.

Wanted to share an incidient which happened to me last night. Was returning from Burger Barn at NIBM road last night it was 10:15 pm was just approaching the NIBM junction when all of a sudden my bike hit a stone which was lying carelessly in the middle of the moderately lit road. Didnt realised what exactly happened in that moment was cruising at 40-50 kmph & the bike suddenly hit something & next thing I remember was my face hitting the the front fairing of the bike & hitting the ground hard. Got up in that very moment & realised that I was bleeding profusely from the nose & chin & mouth (yeah I was not wearing a helmet). People came in to help me stay up as the fall was quiet hard. They also offered to take me to the hospital but I politely declined & rode to my friends place who stays few meters away from the accident spot. They took me to the Inamdar hospital where I had a total of 10 stitches on the upper part of my nose, chin & lost 4 teeth in the front coz of this incident. Fortunately the CT scan showed no serious internal & external injury. Phew Gods Grace

1st Lesson Learnt: Always wear a helmet.

Yes it is because of my idioicy that I have learnt a lesson the hard way. From now one I will always carry a helmet even if I am driving for a short distance & not just for a long ride.

2nd Lesson Learnt: Prevention is better than cure.

No matter how careful & a good rider you just cant be sure of the other road users or the hazards on the road itself.

Hope those who read about my incident be extra careful while riding next time so that no one goes through the pain & trouble which I am going through right now.

Ride safe & ALWAYS WEAR A HELMET!! Cause any one else including me may not be as luck as I was yesterday.

              Drive Safe.

              Cheers,
              Samuel
You are so lucky to be alive and still in possession of your senses, my friend. I do hope and trust that you are sadder but wiser after this accident. This was a hint from the Almighty as also a second chance. IIt is not in His habit to give a third... Get well soon and get an excellent helmet to protect the earlier foolish now wiser brain of yours

My brother-in-law also met with an accident last month when a 16 year old dashed him from the front. The guy was busy talking on his cell phone and riding at high speed when he hit my brother-in-law. He is under aged and doesn't have a license to ride. Both were rushed to a nearby doctor's clinic where both started bleeding from the nose and puking blood. The other guy was okay but my brother-in-law wasn't responding. We had to rush him to Inamdar hospital where the doctor said he has severe injuries in his head after having a CT scan. He had developed a blood clot and fractured his skull bone on the left side. He also has multiple fractures in his nose bone which will be treated later. He was operated within a few hours and the clot removed. He was on life support and in ICCU for few days and the doctor said that the surgery is a risky one and nothing can be said till he gets conscious. Miraculously he recovered within 2 weeks and was discharged from the hospital after 20 days. He still has to have his second surgery after 3 months to get cementing done in the skull since the bone has been removed deforming the shape of the skull. He had to go through all this without any fault of his

The point is IF he would have been wearing a helmet, all this pain could have been avoided. There are many idiots out there who can make your life miserable. So be careful and prepared for the worst on the roads.

Its just the precaution that we can take that cold hedge your risks of getting into any such mess.
We had a quite a productive and elaborated discussion on a similar subject a few days back and I again urge all of my fellow riders to just not leave anything on chance to strike you. be cautious and atleast take care of your think tank...
