  • BTW - I had a wonderful ride to Pratapgad yesterday with cousins, 4 Bajaj Avengers and 1 R15. The roads are perfect, from Mahabi to Pratapgad roads have been resurfaced... I had to literally ride the avenger for sometime as i was actually tired munching those corners, they just don't end somehow ( i wasn't actually tired but it was raining like someone let open the Dam Gates..Firm posture and wet clothes kinda made me shift for sometime, got drenched again in waterfall)

Expect zero visibility on roads after Mahabi to pratapgad, its all in clouds. I had taken my DSLR but dint click much as it was raining very heavily. This wasn't tiring at all just for one reason being the roads were good. Expect lots of waterfalls atleast 10 in between the route, just park and have a bath just in case you got up early for the ride, mountain water at its best. The R15 was quite easy on wet roads, had 4 Bajaj Avengers so i was actually eased out during the ride.

Atop Pratapgad, pithla bhakri has to be the perfect one along with kanda bhaji. One good thing about this fort is that you can ride all the way near the main entrance of the fort, and then walk 40-50 steps till the eating place. So if you are visiting this fort with all your safety gears then it isn't much to trek, i mean walk, there is actually no trek here.

Good dhabas on the Poladpur highway which requires a diversion on the left towards Pratapgad. Yummy chicken stuff.

The ride totaled to 310kms completely, perfect for a Saturday because my body is actually hurting now as I type this.

Stopped at Mapro for ice cream and chocolate brownie, Gulped one sandwich too with coffee.

Something better than Amby i feel for corners and rains and from everything, the cloud ride is still fresh in my mind and it wasnt for some 2 or 3 kms or so, it was for almost 15-20kms after Mahabi to Pratapgad.

PS - Sorry i couldnt make it for the last moment g2g at tmc followed by dhaba stuff. I reached home around 9pm, thaklo vait, direct zhoplo.

        Poladpur - Ok

        Pratapgad - Yummy

Mahabi - Ok, trafficy fter 11

Tamhini - Please avoid, rains have F*&^%D up the roads bad, you actually wont enjoy and then back from Poladpur would be tiring cz of the rains.

My 2cents - Stick to the routes mentioned or else

CC- Khambatki - Panchgani - Mahabi - Pratapgad (only if you are interested) - (Lunch)- Poladpur - NH-17 - Pen - Khopoli - Lonavala - CC

If you are going towards Poldapur side in the ride then avoid potholed road in the ride cz the rains are bad trust me on this, and being on a higher altitude gusty winds are present, we were doing 10-20kmph speeds when going up towards the fort, it was that bad.

Or else the first mentioned route in the previous post is fine too.

Good to hear from you again. I am still writing the travelogue.

Pune to Hyd is ok; I had been on this road in Diwali 2009. There are a few unmade/ dug-up patches short of Solapur but on an average, the road is not all that bad at all. If it has improved in the past 3 years, then you can make it to Hyd in a day. But if not, then I recommend staying overnight in Solapur which is almost exactly midway.

You will be starting now so will be in Hyd at nightfall.
          Thanks for your immediate reply!
We did complete the Hyd-Pune-Hyd ride in 2 days.

We left Chinchwad by about 0830, but it was 0930 by the time we cleared Hadapsar etc, and got past Manjri. Solapur was at 1400 hrs and after lunch, Hyd was by 2030 hrs.

For the return ride we left by 0630 from Hyd and with similar riding times, made it to Pune by 1830 hrs.

This NH 9 was one of the most scary roads I've ridden on. Esp, the stretch from Pune-Solapur. The goddamn oncoming truck drivers who decided to overtake had a "GET OUT OF THE WAY OR DIE" attitude , and with the road width accommodative of exactly 2 trucks and not an inch more, we had to take evasive action regularly. No amount of headlight-work or even waving would help. We just had to slow right down, get off the road onto the gravel and almost stop 4 laning is in progress, and I hope it gets done soon. We ran into the Project Engineer of the 4 laning project during lunch at Solapur, and he told us that the Pune-Solapur stretch is apparently infamous for being the road that contributes the highest number of road-deaths yearly.

With respect to surface quality, about 60-70% of the total lenth is totally rip-worthy, whereas the remaining parts are deceptively pot-holed
In any case, it was a fun ride. The plains on either side are extremely beautiful after the rains, and there are lots of spots for some bike modelling.

          Overall, a good trip.
The more you know, the more you know how less you know.
The less you know, the more you think you really know!

Pune to Payyanur and back! 3 days on the road!

Good to hear that you are back in one piece.Yes, the traffic is bad on the road but I had gone in a car so perhaps was better off.

I had experienced this type of truck behaviour in UP back in 1998. My trick was to halt on the road and wait for the truck to descend the shoulder. Yes, time was wasted but my car (a Zen then) was not

Must have been a tiring ride, Hyd and back in two days.
