I was stopped today at a routine nakabandi near my college. Unfortunately I was carrying last year's insurance copy (mistaking it for present year's, which was left at home). I was asked to pay a fine of Rs. 2000/-, to which I declined saying it's much more. According to them, the reason for such a high amount given was that they were mumbai police (not traffic police). Hearing this I accepted to pay the fine of 2000, even removed my wallet for the same, but they told me I will have to go with them to the nearest police station, meet their senior officer then pay the fine and tomorrow I should be present in the court with all the documents. I agreed to all their conditions, later they gave a few examples where a judge had put a man in drunk and drive case behind bars for a week and other similar cases where the driver/rider was sent to jail. I replied "Since my offence is not of high severity, I won't receive such harsh punishment, so let us go to the police station, where I will pay the fine and all that I will ask for is a receipt of the payment". They doubted whether I had that much money, to which I assured them that in case of insufficient cash I will go to ATM and then make the payment. Further, they inquired about my residence and what I was doing at that place, to which I pointed towards my college. When being asked for an I-card, I presented the same. Once they confirmed that I am a student, they said they feel bad to fine students and let me go asking to take care from next time.

There is no such fine of Rs 2000/- for failing to produce a document. They wanted to take me for a ride and there was no point in arguing with them, hence I played it their way.

Well well well, let me tell you something that happened few days back. I was travelling in car with my mom and was stopped by cops (traffic guys) on the road which is behind hypercity (malad). I pulled down the windows and the cop comes and tells me to roll up the windows. Half way up he asks me stop and says "tinted glass hai, SC ka order hai ye sab nahi chalta" i replied "nikal do". He asked for my license, PUC & insurance. Handed over the license to him. My bad that, the insurance and PUC was not there in the car as my dad uses the car often. After searching for about 15-20 mins, i go to the cops and tell them it is not with me and my dad has it. So, he says fine will be Rs. 1600 for not carrying PUC and Insurance. I told them i will pay the fine. He starts scribbling on the fine receipt, the other cop comes and tells me "kidhar rehta hai, kam kya karta hai, papers sathme kyu nahi hai, kal papers lekar aa police station and fine bhar dena". I told them "all is ok, ab jurm kiya hai to fine bharna padega". The cop who waa scribbling on the receipt was being constantly told by other cop "ruk re baba, puchto sahi pehle". I was giggling in mind. So, in the end they ask me "kitna hai abhi" i told him kuch nahi hai and removed my wallet (which was literally empty ). They were like, "1600 ka aadha to de". Gave them 200 bucks and left.

When they told me Rs. 1600 is the fine, that is when i understood they are fooling around and wanted to fool me. Also, only the traffic cops have the authority to fine offenders and not the regular police guys. Regular guys can stop us for checking and not fine us.

                            Cheerz!!
The real beauty lies in throttle's twist!!

It would be nice if someone puts up a list of fines against traffic offenses, so that we may know when we are being taken for a ride by the cops. Can the more knowledgable guys on this topic point us to some place where we can see such a list?
