  • Engine Braking

Just my 2 cents on Engine Braking here:
Aargee: U wud have used this even in ur car(Inadvertently maybe). When u brake, u always down-shift. And engine braking is not necessarily harsh downshifts, say 5th to 3rd! As Sri said THIS will damage the engine. Not normal downshifts. Say, ur doing 80 in 6th, and u need to slow down, hitting brakes is an unnecessary waste. Downshift to 5th, then 4th and simultaneously start hitting the brakes. And once ur bike is out of the power band on that gear, downshift again. And during downshifts, blipping the throttle helps. A LOT!
Frankly, all of us wud be doing this without knowing it is engine braking. In our Desi-lawnmowers, we have a redline of 10K and a power band of around 3K rpm, hardly a band wide enough to practice and make effective use of Engine Braking. A 250/400/600/1000/1xxx has enough rpm to play with and so provides for more effective engine braking.

Ram: And regarding the run-in, I agree that u shud not abuse the engine, but am pretty sure its not going to be spoilt if u take it on a trip to the hills. There maybe controversy surrounding the motoman method, but I do find some logic in it!

    • @Apar - Tks very much for the comparison & that does help, especially this one...
ay, ur doing 80 in 6th, and u need to slow down, hitting brakes is an unnecessary waste. Downshift to 5th, then 4th and simultaneously start hitting the brakes
Yes, we do this, once the speed comes down from the PB, we once again shift down, I do it & agree with it.

But, as you said, from 80 on 6th, my point was, the regular brakes are sufficient to control for which Sunny was stating on the bike in a controllable speed & that's what I wanted to understand the depth.

but am pretty sure its not going to be spoilt if u take it on a trip to the hills
      +1 - Strongly agreed

Aargee - I used the words 'controllable speed' because its relative to the bike that you're riding. While Apar is spot on in his explanation, 80 on 6th is not common on the Ninja - at least not for me - I'm normally on 3rd or 4th at that speed to keep the bike in its power-band.

It's more like 100-120 in 6th and down-shifting quickly through the gears, blipping the throttle a fraction of a second before the downshift to enable the gears to mesh smoothly, while at the same time squeezing the front brakes in an even and slowly increasing pressure is the best way to shave off speed in the little Kwacker.

@ Apar on a funny note: During our kodai trip i will narrate a small story which revolves around Engine Breaking:
It was over 9 PM, Krish(P150), Badri(P150) and myself(P180) were in kodai. The plave we stayed was 12 Kms down the Kodai hill, and the roads were pretty bad, no Lightings though.
I was leading, Krish followed me, and badri was the last.
Roads were barely Visible, and nothing over 50 mts. I was finding it difficult to ride.
All of a sudden, i see an object next to me on the right side, and was shocked, did not know what it was. I looked properly, it was badri on his Red pulsar, no headlights.
I asked him " Dei what happ to the lights?"
His reply" I am on Economy mode"
I said" no man its dangerous at this time"
His Reply" no nothing. I am using Engine Breaking"
I stopped the bike, and Krish too did the same, Badri got some nice scoldings, and then he did turn to Non Economy mode.

Just a memory of our trip. Nothing to Deviate away from the topic.

            • @Sunny - We'll discuss that in person. Adding more posts here is only provoking different thoughts & questions to me.

I was using my R15 as a reference point.

                  - Precisely! Everyone tends to use their own bike as a reference point!

@ Apar - Looking forward to meeting you - have heard about you but not had the pleasure of meeting up.

                          Guys ,

I noticed an article in the papers about an old dutch settlement in a place called 'Sadras' somewhere after Mahabs. Does anyone know how to get there? Is it worth a visit?

                            • I'll be missing most of the G2G's organized this month due to poor finance & that includes the forth coming weekend

Here's the map to reach Sadras...

                              Looks like there're 2 routes, Chennai-ECR-Kalpakkam & Chennai-Chengalpet-Kalpakkam.
