I too would suggest the ECR. Traffic is quite less, and its a lot more scenic route. You can take plenty of pictures. It will be a lot more relaxed ride, without pushing yourself.

I haven't taken the NH 45, but its a 4 lane highway compared to the 2 lane ECR. ECR is a scenic route though. Also if you are going to take NH 45, better do it before night because this route has a huge volume of traffic, especially trucks, it will be a real pain to get out of Chennai through NH 45 at night.

I don't really buy that argument. I would anyday prefer going via NH45 because its lot more safer than mad drivers(car, buses, truck) missing bikers narrowly in ECR. In NH45, Traffic is only till say Gooduvancheri, after that it's not difficult to navigate is my experience. Infact, the state highway connecting from Tindivanam till Pondy is a broad 6lane track kind of smooth lay out.

Yes, for a tourist, ECR should do, but would definitely caution about the challenges. Chennai to Pondy is under 150kms either route so he could decide to pass anytime he wishes. If it is night ride, then one must avoid ECR as it's highly accident prone route.

        Ride safe.

Yes.. you are right.. thats the reason i suggested the ECR.. since he is coming for a visit

at the same time.. being cautious is more important as it is a 2 lane 2 way traffic Highway.. All the vehicles come insanely fast.. but that is what I love riding on the ECR about.. Just my Opinion.. been to Pondicherry many a times via ECR.. both car and bike.. I just love the scenic sea view..

Totally agree to this one. Also, are the cops still disturbing peace loving armored riders? If yes, its another reason to avoid ECR.

And the guy lived happily ever after and rode motorcycles and watched sport on a big screen TV, went fishing and surfing, and played golf a lot, and drank beer and scotch and had tons of money in the bank and left the toilet seat up and farted whenever he wanted.

My personal suggestion... Take ecr in early morning like 6am reach pondy, have fun and return to chennai via thindivanam- NH..
Kindly avoid night riding.. Try to reach chennai before it gets dark so that u can avoid mad trucks, fast and furious travel buses, know the condition of road!

Yes the ECR is a bit dangerous because its a 2 lane road. If he wants to get to Pondy more quickly, he can try the NH 45, only that he has to see he exits Chennai before night falls. Once you pass Chennai there shouldn't be much trouble. I am thinking about trying this route sometime soon. Is it 6 lane all the way till Tindivanam?

No... I clearly mentioned from Tindivanam till outer Pondy ( I forgot the name). Yes, one must be looking for the board which directs to exit the NH45 to a bye/service lane to reach under the bridge and take left.

It's a 4 lane till tindivanam, after the diversion we take before Tindivanam - it is a 2 lane for the majority of the distance with barely any traffic.

Nh 45 is one of the best roads in chennai.... it is far safer then ecr... I understand ecr is a bit senric... but with nh 45 one can enjoy the ride a lot better.... you will not even find a single pothole.... you can trust the roads and ride on.... I prefer NH 45 always while going to pondy if I am alone.... as well as u don't have the fear of crazy drivers from the opposite direction....
