Saying thank you to the month of March for giving us BMW

Because, why should sportsbikes have all the fun? That thing eating up corners is a BMW K1600 GTL Exclusive which we rode to INTERMOT in 2014!

March 1916 was the month when the BMW marquee was founded. When it comes to motorheads, BMW is a brand synonymous with explosive performance, case in point the BMW M3 or… the OG S1000RR when it comes to motorcycles.

BMW stands for Bayerische Motoren Werke or Bavarian Motor Works and the company was founded in 1916 as Bayerische Flugzeugwerke AG. But the origins of the company go back to 1913 when it was known as Rapp Motorenwerke.

BMW’s first product was a straight-six aircraft engine. Many consider this to the origin of the famous BMW logo and that it portrays propellers of an aircraft. The Blue-White colour scheme is said to be derived from the Bavarian flag.

BMW started manufacturing motorcycles after World War 1 and R32 was what really put BMW Motorrad on the motorcycling map and guess what propelled this awesome motorcycle? A ‘Boxer’ twin! BMW Motorrad still uses this particular engine configuration with models like the R 1250 GS…
