I doubt that one. The journo goofed up is more likely.

        • Duke 390: Long Test Ride Review

Took another longish test-ride today, this time from KTM-Indiranagar where I have booked.

Route: KTM-Indiranagar to Sony-centre signal and back
Time: Totally took around 30 mins

Today for the first time I rode it in various conditions to get accustomed to the machine and set my expectations right.

Goof-up is improbable to my mind.

At least a couple (if not more) reports cover this.

LB's KTM Dave Checks Out The KTM 390 Launch

First ride: 2013 KTM Duke 390 - Road Tests: First Rides - Visordown

It is not as illogical as it seems, since apparently only Europe bound bikes are mentioned as taking the scenic route via the European town of Matinghofen (for the checks). KTM has not been quoted as saying that bikes for other places (Australia, or Asia) also go via Matinghofen.

To my mind, the 'quality check' is more from a European customer assurance perspective: to give comfort that these 'high-er' performance, 'India made' bikes have been checked and measured against European standards.

I would be surprised if in reality, KTM believes that these quality checks are really needed (beyond the customer assurance objective mentioned above). This is because in my view, if they had genuinely perceived quality issues, they would probably have taken the more logical / sensible option of deputing a few KTM Austria checkers to India, and try to resolve the issues at source, instead the wasteful option of identifying issues at a subsequent point after shipping.

I was referring to the part of the report which says "all the KTM 390 bikes". This part,

KTM sold 1.07 lakh bikes last year globally. Nandi said all the*KTM 390*bikes produced so far have been shipped to KTM headquarters in Austria, from where they will go to the dealers.*

                Noted.

Then we can probably conclude that all the 390s produced till now, were primarily for Europe (via Matinghofen).

Of course, heads of organisations would make broad statements, so he probably didn't get down to the nuts and bolts of the numbers, and think about the few dozen or so units consumed in India (mostly by dealers), and was probably only meaning the hundreds (I guess) shipped for Europe.
