Re: How do people react seeing you Geared Up?

I found only two aspects when people find you riding in gears, either they think that you are a bike racer/stunter or you are mad or came from another planet.....

I can bet none of the person those who seen me on road while riding fully geared for safety.....

When here at my place....where you would see a few of only 10 geared riders all around the city...because traffic here is scarce.......when I get ready geared up....people especially crazy riders wearing short trousers and half sleeve tees with ofcourse no helmets and with slippers on their feet.....come near you....give an aggressive look and race their engines....as if challenging you for a race....and then they fly away.....thinking you would race them :P
But I never do....hehe...sane riding is safe

nice thread .......... I only wonder how did I miss !!

here in New Delhi ........ you get relatively less stare if you are all geared up on an Indian Bike ......... although the case turns different with a SBK

        Warm Regards,

Re: How do people react seeing you Geared Up?

Since buying a M795 I also made it a point to buy armoured riding pants and armoured fabric jacket (with removable liner) I also have 2 prs of gauntlets (longer than gloves and cover my watch) Komine brand and also a pr of Draggin Jeans with kevlar lining. I don't have biking boosts as yet but I wear steel cap work boots if I'm going on a bit of a cruise.

I get stares a plenty by the other scooter riders, Usual dress for a scooter/bike is tee-shirt, shorts-jeans and sandals/jogging shoes.
I live in Saigon Vietnam so this protective gear is expensive compared to their salary. Its worth 3-4 months salary.
Because the Monster is a lot faster than my 200cc FZS I will need the protection incase something happens.
My (vietnamese) wife thinks I'm crazy because its too hot, which is true, until I get going then I start to cool down.

With the average of 29 deaths on the road per day in Vietnam it makes sense to give yourself a chance to survive even on slow speeds accidents.
I had a friend who had a accident and needs reconstructive surgery on his nose and forehead (poor fitting helmet) and his knuckles are all grazed and cut up from the asphalt.

More than my gears I get weird stares/gazes everyday when they see my Balaclava as my visor is transparent.

Re: How do people react seeing you Geared Up?

My Hyperion jacket is quite subtle so doesnt attract much attention. When office folks observe me in the elevator (coming from the parking lot with jacket on and lid in hand), 1st thing they ask, "Kaunsa bike?" and before I open my mouth it's followed by "…Bullet??" Anything other than a Yes leaves them disappointed. So when they hear "Pulsar", they just sigh…and"…200" doesnt impress them either :P

Though I admit I don't go ATGATT on city rides, I wear my Airoh Speedfire One even if it's fetching milk from 2 blocks away.
Owing to it's distinctive bright graphics, it gets a LOT of attention. The pesky uncle from upstairs said "You look like astronaut!". And this when I was not wearing any other gear!! He asks me the price and I lie that it's 4k (Another colony uncle almost had a stroke when I made the mistake of tellin him 8k) He grabs it and starts checking like he's searching for gold biscuits or diamonds. I shudder to think what he'll do if he spots me with all the gear.…

I too have the Speed Fire lid. Collegues could not believe the 7k price, saying it must be of rs 700! , they started looking at it intriguingly and said what was in the helmet worth of such a high price. Some think Rs3000 is mighty high when I lie about the numbers. The fact that the speedfire is an entry level model, I wonder whether they would run amok hearing the prices of other upmarket helmets..

Re: How do people react seeing you Geared Up?

Its about educating the younger generation about road safety.
The older generation are not riding the latest high tech bikes with more power and tq than the previous older generation bikes, Not to mention the faster speeds people ride compared to 20-40yrs ago.

I also have to tell little white lies about the price of my riding gear or my wife will yap yap and call her sisters up and tell them that her crazy Australian husband spent $XXX on riding gear.
I've worked out when people ask you how much it costs, Just tell them what they want to hear, When others you don't know ask then you can tell them the actual price.
Still what is the price of safety? My gloves cost me $200. Is that too much to protect my hands and fingers in the event of a fall? If it means my hands come out of an accident unscathed and not badly damaged then I say yes they are worth it. Same with riding jacket and pants.

Had a rather funny incident this Sunday. I am at a signal, all geared up for a long tour when this guy pulls in alongside me. He was wearing a short-sleeve cotton tee, a pair of jeans, chappals and helmet, of course. Had a pillion behind him and I could see him gesturing at his arms and shoulders... probably trying to explain what a riding jacket was...though he wasnt wearing one himself.

Oh...and that dude was on a Hayabusa, nothing less, mind you. Never thought sbk owners would be that callous about gear

Uncle asking for riding gloves as he had to do some electrical work in his house, he thinks this are shock proof! So next time you are going for a new gloves you have a new parameter

We have a lot of superbikes here at Nasik. You name it and then have it. Starting from Harley 883 to Ducati 848. The guy you mentioned was actually overgeared by Nasik standards! The proper gear while riding a superbike according to these people are goggles[no helmet- how chicks are gonna know whos astride the bike?], tees, shorts and chappals..

Over here it's very rare to see guys on proper bikes wearing any gear, though most do have the gear, I guess they just reserve it for the good old Sunday rides.
When I ride out fully geared up, I get a few stares, not really too much, more if my pants are tucked into my boots. Most people do ask if I'm going for a race, so I inform them that it's just for survival and I prefer to suffer melting underneath all this, than have road rash, busted bones and silly hospital bills.
Beware of Bread, don't say I didn't warn you!
More than 98 percent of convicted criminals are bread eaters !
Statistics show that more than 75 % of violent crimes are committed within 24 hours of eating bread !
Bread is known to be extremely addictive. Subjects deprived of bread and given only water, actually begged for bread after just two days !
Bread has been proven to kill. Scientists have now uncovered alarming evidence that 100% of the people who eat bread will eventually die !

Way back in 2005, I 'spied' R1-riding guy. Spotting a SBK at a place like Bhubaneswar was a great deal back then, and I instantly clicked him on my measly cellphone cam. He was the proper poser, with only sunglasses, jeans and chappals. Still have that pic lying around on my lappy, will upload it later today.

I have never seen anyone at Goa wearing even a basic helmet...except for a couple of westerners on a RE with bucket helmets (what exactly are they called?) When I took an Avenger on hire, I was offered a bicycle helmet with a broken strap!!! When I asked for a proper helmet, the guy tells me, "Sir, you are at Goa. If you wear a helmet and block your vision, what will you enjoy?" DaFaQ!!!!
