AGPS means, I will be assisted through a voice, right.?
And will it work thru Google Maps only, which I have by default or can I get any offline maps too
It will be assisted by the triangulation provided using the network towers of your operator (Vodafone/Airtel/BSNL etc.) + satellite data it will download weekly from the internet (it probably wont let you know about the download). I guess Samsung provides Route 66 application on GPS phones but I am not very sure. AGPS will work on any GPS application worth its salt.

Offline maps are always better while touring as you may not find network everywhere to download maps.
Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

        +1

        The GPS thingy is crap.
Nothing beats a good old map and some directions from locals.

I guess that you have never used MapMyIndia Maps on a GPS device/ Smartphone along with turn-by-turn voice navigation. (They are currently available for all major platforms, i.e. Windows, Android, iphone/ipod touch, symbian, BADA[under construction]) Google maps is rubbish in comparison. I feel even directions from locals are crap in comparison. And besides. Imagine when you are touring in an area where you dont know the local language. Its better + faster than stopping and struggling everywhere.

+1, infact sometimes stopping at a place in itself is a challenge. At other times with the kind of riding you would be doing (for which you need the map) its quite posisble that you will not find people or have problems understanding language to know the route.
I have tried asking route to the cows, but it didnt work!

Google Maps is a basic map software.... load the maps while you have good connectivity and it will pull it up from cache when you need it.

PS: New Google maps has turn by turn navigation as well.

PPS: There is a difference between the GPS map, and a navigator.
The GPS map at best logs your trip or usually is limited to plot where you are.
The naviagator helps plot the best route and suggests them via voice and or plotting them on the screen.

Google Maps in its current - globally avilable form is somewhere in the middle

I happen to have that particular Google maps software. Its nowhere as good as the MapMyIndia iNav for Windows mobile on my earlier phone. On the last trip i was LOST! no locals, no network. I was stuck with Google Maps for Android.

Google Maps for Froyo also has voice navigation. But that feature is only available in US / UK(maybe)

P.S.: Maybe I am about to make my previous phone a dedicated GPS device and use a different device for calling + music+ P&S camera.

                    • There are light 6.5 kernel ROMs out there.... use them, get a cheap lifetime VSNL SIM and go ahead.
Get map my India OR the *cough* freewares out there and you are set! If using google maps, then load the entire map at different zoom levels via wi fi etc

                          • Samsung Wave is 17.5k which is out of my budget. My budget is 12.5k and X6 is affordable as it has 8GB inbuilt storage @13.5k other reason is Symbian OS which supports tons of applications.

                            Please suggest me other options.
