You will need to change the gasket, clear any trace of coolant from the chamber, if you had no other damage reassemble and you will be good to go. As a precaution you should check your spark plug condition (most likely it will be unaffected) also you should check your oil for contamination, if it's ok you can reuse if you're not due a change, again most unlikely to be affected.
I have been suggesting for long to Joel to include a set of gaskets with the big bore. As Stefanm suggested, change your gasket with a new gasket. Use a standard gasket with no changes made to it. Do no run the bike further without changing the gasket.

    • yes the spark plug has given up. happned to run the bike for some 25 km. but it is now grounded. so will change gasket with original one without cutting or filing. i am running stock head. wont the piston hit the extra part of gasket? or the piston doesnt come that upward?

You will need to file the inside of the gasket where it sits over the bore, just enough to clear the piston and make sure the top of the cylinder and bottom of the head is clean and free of debris, for a tight joint.

had an opportunity to meet Abhimanyu31 yesterday as we wanted to take a third opinion regarding how to troubleshoot the problems we are facing with the R170.

So today we sent her to the Yamaha SVC and following parts were replaced:

            1) Fuel Pump
            2) Front Mag Wheel
            3) Rubber casings for the Headlight holder
            4) Gear Assembly
            5) Coneset
            6) Front Windshield
            7) 60W/55 bulb for lower beam

The moment we got the fuel pump replaced, immediately we noticed that the bike came to life with utmost ease. The Tacho needle which was vibrating like crazy has now settled and doesn't go back and forth when idling. Will do a test run tonight and confirm the result.

There was no issue with the speedo sensor or the cable. The groove inside the mag wheel where the speedo sensor sits was completely gone hence, the speedo was not able to read out anything. The front mag wheel was replaced.

The handling has improved considerably post cone set replacement. Earlier the handlebar used to shake if one took the bike through pothole. But now that's not the case.

The lower beam light has been replaced from 35 watt to 60W/50 watt bulb.

Had a word with Joel... we may have to reprogram the ECU once to match the sea level conditions in Mumbai to give out better performance results. Abhimanyu31, may need your help again on this one .

            Will keep everyone posted.

            Cheers

For some filing a little off the gasket wasn't required, for mine the clearance wasn't enough and had a ticking sound. You can manually turn the crank to bring the piston to it's highest point, if it's clear of the gasket then just reassemble, if it catches then you will need to file it a little. Gasket seal is not required if both surfaces are free of debris and in good condition, I guess it's your call if you want it or not.

                  Hi,

Please get in touch with Joel for the same. His Email ID: [email protected]

Abhimanyu31, me and my friend finally had done a thorough troubleshooting of the R170. It has to be mentioned that Joel was on phone throughout with us helping us out to pin point the problem even late at night. We have haggled the poor guy inundating him with phone calls and queries.

So he definitely deserves our sincere thanks and now commands more respect then ever!!

It turns out the PowerTronic ECU was the culprit. The ECU unit chip has some problem, may be a one off case, some manufacturing defect. However, There is a 2 year warranty on it and Joel immediately assured us that he would send the new ECU on this Monday. Thank you Joel and thank you Abhimanyu31 for helping us out. More report once, we get hold of the new ECU.

                  Cheers

                      1) Fuel Pump: Rs. 7800/- (Yamaha Factory Shop, Malad)
                      2) Front Mag Wheel: Rs. 3200/- (Yamaha Workshop, Lower Parel)
                      3) Rubber casings for the Headlight holder (don't remember should be under 150-200 bucks)
                      4) Gear Assembly (Rs. 250/-)
                      5) Coneset (Rs. 3200/-)
                      6) Front Windshield (250/-)
                      7) 60W/55 bulb for lower beam (Rs. 80/-, a subsidary brand of OSRAM)

All prices are based in Mumbai, may vary in different states as per the octroi and taxes applicable.

Fair warning though. The 60W 55 draws a lot of power from the battery so i usually switch it off when stuck on a traffic signal to avoid additional load to the battery. Never start the bike when the bulb is on. ALternative option is to go for a Maintenance Free Battery, 9 amps (AMARON or other well known brands.) They take a little bit time to charge but will take on all the load you throw at them.

                      Cheers

                      • New ECU is already sent as of evening today. You should recieve in a day or two, depending on our lowsy Indian courier system
Pratik will do the needful. Have guided him on what to do.

We have finally received the new ECU almost a week late thanks to the IST (Indian Stretchable Time) followed by the courier companies in India. Since, my friend is currently out of station, we will get the new replacement POWERTRONIC ECU mapped with Abhimanyu31 & Joel's help by this Saturday. We will also ship the faulty POWERTRONIC ECU back to Race Concepts so that Joel can do a thorough diagnostic test and initiate the quality check process. I am sure it is definitely a one off case though!

We still have a few more pending replacements/upgrades to be taken care of:

                          1) New Set of Tires. Will only go for Stock MRF only as they have the best grip ever.
                          2) As per Abhimanyu31's recommendation a 5/9 amp Maintenance Free Battery (Most likely AMARON/EXIDE) to take care of the additional load of 60W 55 bulb and any future electrical mods we intend to do with the R170.
                          3) A completely new custom camshaft courtesy Joel, Race Concepts to make the R170 even more devilshly fast.
                          4) Minute tweaks with removing one of the lower gaskets to bump up 20psi more compression in the combustion chamber as per Joel's recommendation, which will surely change the character of the bike and the compression ratio to even higher then the current set up. Expecting to generate more power!!
                          5) Since, this is a stage III souped up ride, we intend to use only Speed 97/higher octane fuel to get the max out of the R170.

Will keep everyone updated as we continue to make the R170 even more aggressive!!

                          • ECU Replacement & the Pending Tweaks

                            Hi all,

yesterday night me, Abhimany31 & my friend finally installed the new replacement POWERTRONIC ECU on the R170 and got the new engine map set on it. The Bike is now able to rev upto 12000 rpm flat. However, since, we have still not been able to remove the gasket as mentioned on earlier post, the bike is losing out compression on higher speed and refuses to go beyond 108 kmph. Hopefully in a week or two, all of us should be able to make some free time and get the rest of the tweaks done. We have to remove one of the lower gasket as suggested by Joel to increase compression and also install the new custom made Hotter Cam courtesy Race Concepts to make this ride even more aggressive then before..

For all those aspiring riders who intend to get Joelled, hear this out. Yesterday while doing test runs to get the correct map set, my friend unintentionally ticked off a Duke 200 rider. the Duke rider was waiting for the R170 to come on the road and there started a drag!! (mind you, all the roads were empty and without any traffic, we donot like/want to promote street racing!!). The R170 even at its current troubled state right from the start managed to stay ahead from the Duke 200 by over 4 bikes length all the way to 100+ kmph. My friend once, he realised what was happening immediately slowed down and allowed the Duke owner now with mangled ego to go ahead.

                            More reports coming up soon..

                            Cheers,

@Abhimanyu31: I was rather honestly surprised to witness the R170 taking on a Duke 200 and that too easily over 2-3 seconds according to my calculations. i am sure the Duke owner must have reached home cursing himself .

However, to be fair we have here a 27 bhp souped up ride while his was bone stock and the power to weight ratio of the R170 is way higher then the latter. Nevertheless, it does show the potential of turning one's ride into a monster courtesy performance modders like Joel, Race Concepts.

                                Cheers,
