• When the mean becomes meaner, the RTR190

I request you to please go through this thread http://www.xbhp.com/talkies/general-...ouse-fz18.html instead of reading this one. It has all the facts and figures one needs to know and the dark side of RC!

I thought there was no separate thread for reviews on Race Concepts kit for Apache Series RTR.. but if something similar already exists, mods, please merge it..

This is the story on how I got the Race Concepts kit for my RTR180 ie Big bore + Headwork + FFE. If you want to skip the droning & boring part, skip the next few lines

Since I first heard about Race Concepts (sometime last year), I looked a bit more at that time about it in its website & xbhp & after reading all the reviews, it was always running around in the back of my head, unable to shut it down . But I was afraid of getting it done, dont know why, might be because of warranty, or how to convince my parents, or wondering if I really needed it??

Days passed, then months, the reviews on xbhp kept flowing more & more FFEs & big bores.. & one fine day (in March) I made up my mind & shot a mail to Joel, asking details about everything. After some discussions online, I met him personally & got to know about all the mods in detail. For some reason (busy office schedule i guess) I somehow dropped the idea of getting it done anytime soon & just got carried away in the daily chores of corporate life..

And another fine day, in June, the online discussion with Joel began & let me cut to the chase, finally on July 21st (One week before her bday ), I got the Big bore, Headwork and FFE done in Joel's workshop itself. That week was one of the busiest week in office & this was the most awaited moment! And there I was, acting like a small kid in excitement, dont know what to say.. turned on the ignition & oh the sound! (this was with dB killer ) & after some more discussions & after getting the dB killer removed, bid him goodbye & now again oh the sound! I never expected it to be anything like this you have to hear it live to know what it feels like.. not even on video..

And so here are the first impressions after riding it for a week..

First thing you ask is where the hell are the vibes?? Joel was saying it becomes like a Honda engine, & I am not exaggerating, it has!

Secondly there is massive difference with & without dB killer.. without it, the engine becomes a total beast, feels more smooth, revs easily & there is significant power gain in low & mid range rpm (Can't test the high rpms before run in ) & its really hard to resist to go beyond 5k rpm .. & did I say loud?? The idling has an enfield like thump & if you want to be safe in city, you dont cross 4k rpm or just let go of throttle if you see a cop (just to be safe).. when u let go of throttle, it sounds like a slowly building thunder, which in my opinion is the best sounding part.. Other thing is the attention you get.. most people give second looks as to what is causing that sound, one guy actually asked me if I cut the stock silencer!!! Only drawback of this is, you also attract attention of street hooligans who try to race with you & ride rashly even if you dont bother to look at them (One guy did a wheelie in front of me & let go of both hands for sometime in some narrow road in a proper residential area... Heights of craziness!!!)

Plug in the dB killer, the sound comes down a lot, sounds more like amplified version of stock.. there is quite noticeable reduction in power gain.. bottomline, less fun to ride .. Was not able to test mileage as of now, but it will definitely be more than stock.. Currently, I am riding everywhere with dB killer because of the sole reason that I wont be able to resist revving if i remove it & also to avoid unnecessary attention! Waiting for the weekend rides for proper mileage tests

Joel, thanks a lot man! Needless to say, you have made my office commute really fun!

And all other RC kit owners, please pitch in your reviews...

    UPDATE!!
    Here are a few pics.

Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

even i picked up the free flow from joel last month for my p220 and have only ridden it with the db killer for 5 mins.

i feel the bass drastically reduces with the db killer on and the exhaust sounds flat

whenever i see cops all i do is depress the clutch, never been caught till now. Been over 1000kms

Update : Checked the mileage yesterday on a small ride & found it to be 47kmpl! (mostly highway) The bike was running a little lean, so did a DIY for carburettor needle adjustment (took really long for a newbie like me ) & now the response is perfect with the dB killer & still a little lean without it.

I too have Joel's kit. But mine is RTR170 ( 63.5mm bigbore and stock 52.9mm storke crankshaft) with RC ffe. Very awesome midrange! Bike doesn't knock on 5th at 2k rpm even with a pillion ; it just pulls! Pull from 5-8k rpm is very strong. Ive also fitted Pulsar 200's Mikuni BS29mm carburetor.

Although I personally want my bike to go crazy from midrange to redline, just like the R15 and Ninja (not same but similar types). Stock head and camshaft simply doesn't give that. I guess the high-lift cams will do the trick!

@tushar : Thanks for your review I feel there is already a good enough punch from midrange to redline But in case you try cams and valves, do let me know

@Shahbaz : Was a bit busy lately, so havent been able test it properly on highways.. anyways, I recently tried to do a 0-60 test, but every time I start it above 5000rpms it just pops a wheelie! I couldnt avoid it no matter what, tried even crouching.. So since I am uncomfortable with wheelies (Never tried a wheelie before ) I thought of letting it go for now.. In stock, my best was 3.8s (Gravity also played a part in it ) As to testing top speed, I am currently running on Motul mineral oil, which might limit the rev to some extent & thus limit the top end.. and also some fine tuning of carb is required (Too lazy to do it ).. I also had a micropuncture on my rear tyre which I didnt know about for quite sometime (It was causing my mileage to drop & a visit to petrol bunk to fill air every other day & the puncture was barely visible!).. I will be changing oil soon, & will tune it up properly, then a proper review of performance will come up, & a video on exhaust note comparison too
