  • How to generate more torque at lower rpm on glady

My friend was looking for a 125cc bike and i suggested him ss125.He took my words and got it without giving any second thought but now he curse me for my suggestion and the sole reason is pathetic performance at lower speed. Most of the time he has to drive with pillow and in dense traffic.
So is there any way to make it a bit of better low and mid range performer. Can its engine be tuned for more torque.

Your friend should have done some research before buying the bike. If low end torque was so important to him, he could have gone for something like a Honda Stunner instead which has a good low end torque but poor top end performance (because of vibrations)

Low end torque has never been the Gladiator's forte. However, it compensates for this drawback remarkably in the top end department. The SS125 revs nicely and is absolutely vibration free at high speeds. One can comfortably cruise on the SS125 at 70 Kmph which is not so comfortable on other 125cc bikes due to the vibrations.

One can go for a sprocketing mod to improve the low end torque but don't expect too much. If he decides to go for it, look for either a smaller front sprocket or a larger rear sprocket. Both will help improve the low end torque. But one should be careful with the sprocketing mods as it might overload the engine. Also, there may be a slight increase in fuel efficiency (not mandatory). Finding a matching sprocket may be a challenge though.
Signals which are timed for 50 Kmph are also timed for 100 Kmph :)

Drive with pilliow??? I think You mean to say pillion.

To imrove low end torque You can get the bike joelled. Few pages back on this thread someone got his gladi tuned by joel and has mentioned that there was a tremendous boost in the torque and acceleration without sacrificing the mileage.

You can also try tweaking the head a little bit from someone who knows his stuff which will improve compression or You can try jetting as well. I would leave this to the seniors for them to comment.

PS: You can post Your query under help me section for better visibility and You can get inputs from everybody and not just from the owners.

          .
          Sorry for my bad english.
I dont think my friend will agree for any engine mod because it is new and will void warenty...so i think sprocketing is the option left...anyway thanks a lot guys for your response...

          • Hi guys.

my Gladiator (SS125 type) is 5 months old.. bought it on 4th june 2012.

everything is fine but just few problems i have observed with my bike.

3 services are done. nest service due in the month of November.

following are the problems i have observed from day one.

            1) My mileage is really very low. 42km/ltr(i checked it thrice). i daily ride for 20 km. 50% in cut to cut traffic and other 50 at normal speed. service centre guy say it will improve eventually. i dont think so.
            2) there is some problem with engine. when i keep it idling the engine is not running at a fixed speed. its continuously changing speed... running is not rhythmic. suppose if i hold it at particular rpm (Say 3000) there is a sound coming from engine as if engine has misses the beat. i mean to say is its not running at synchronised speed. theres sound of "thup thup" after some intervals when kept at constant rpm.

above two problems i have been observing from day one. no one knows anything about it at service centrer.

            3) this problem i have been experiencing since last two days. my throttle response has become really laggy.. earlier my bike was fun to drive...but since two days am not able to overtake anyone, engines response is not up to the mark as it used to be before. it worsens when riding with pillion. even when i put more throttle engine just makes noise as i dont see much improvement in the speed and torque.

kindly help me with this. sorry for bad english

              That someone is me .
Just an update about it. Recently I took the bike for testing on highway & was successful in attaining a speedo indicated top speed of 120 kmph . All this was in just a stretch of 4-5 kms with medium crosswinds & semi-crouched riding position. The bike easily revs till 10k rpm in every gear now.

              2) I guess that is phat phat sound & not thup thup. Its normal.

              3) Get your carburettor & spark plug cleaned. That should rectify your issue.

Mileage of 42-45 is normal for all Gladiators. Maximum that I have achieved till date is 48 in city and 52 on highways.
Check your AFR (Air-Fuel ratio) - fluctuating RPMs are usually an indicator on non-optimal AFR. If the AFR is correct, you may need to clean your carburettor.
As the case with many others, the thup-thup sound exists in my Gladiator too, and I really dont see it as a cause for concern.

Biking is not about how many Km/h you put on your Speedo. It's about how many miles you put on your Odo. Ride Safe, Ride Long!

                  hey guys thanks for replay.

                  questions.

                  1) how to check and keep setting at optimum air:fuel ratio? should i do it by outside mechanic other than yamaha guys?
                  2) can i clean carb myself? or do i need to check with yamaha guys.
                  3) most of the forums i have visited they say that mileage is around in the range of 50-55. i think mine is really low.

                    3) Yes that's true, I am using my SS125 from the last one year, i have nearly covered 14k KMs on it, I am getting a mileage of 52-54 KM mileage in Bangalore traffic and up to 57 KM on Highways.

the reason for your low mileage may be due to bad fuel, try filling petrol from some good petrol bunks like shell and see if the mileage increases.

and as for questions raised earlier in discussions, i have never had any difficulty in either slow or higher speed on my bike, the top speed i achieved on my bike is 109 in highway without vibrations( I chickened out and slowed after reaching that speed). I ride as slow 20 to 30 KM if the pillon rider is a lady without any problem. so no problem either even in slow speed.

If you have some prior experience in handling mechanicals, there are lots of Do-It-Yourself posts on this forum where you can learn step-by-step on tuning your AFR to the optimal mix / cleaning your carb at home. If you are a newbie, I'd suggest you to visit the service center or a trusted mechanic.

Have they improved the FE in newer Yamahas (SS125)? Most of the 2008-2009 Gladi's (SS/RS/JA/Graffiti) have a similar FE of 45-50. Ofcourse you can keep a lean mix and ride really softly to push the FE further.

Yes the newer version is more Fuel efficient, I am getting around 53-55 KMs in city conditions with a bit harsh riding, when i maintain speed in the range 40-60 i get mileage up to 57 KM/L

Guys how you get this kind of mileage, i am struggling with with 41-43, what can be done to improve the mileage without affecting performance? as am already facing performance issue.. my bike is relatively new.. its been just 5 months!

To be frank, I am getting this mileage right from the beginning, I haven't modified my bike or anything to get a higher mileage.

I think only this factors may be affecting your bike's mileage

Fuel: where do you regularly get your bike filled up
Road & Driving conditions: where are you located
Improper servicing done by the mechanic
Speed: whats your average speed on road

Hi, I have recently re-done my brother's Glady. Besides changing the valves, I have changed the piston block kit and carburretor. I too have experienced the irregular engine beat. After my mechanic's check he just removed the choke from the carburretor and refitted it. The engine beats with a regular rhythm now. I suggest you ask the mechanic to check the choke.
                              Regards,
                              Merv

I got my bike check from one of the local mechanic, he just retuned the carb so now the pickup and engine has become much better and peppier.
engine runs smooth now, and no lag in acceleration. drive is much better.

uneven engine beats are still there and mileage is same around 42kmpl.

Dont know what to do with mileage.
