I bought this only after going through 130+ pages of this thread and already felt like owning this bike before even I bought it.
Booked this bike on March 17 2012 and got it a week later. Loving it ever since. Done 8000+ Kms at an average of 53 Kmpl (153 litres so far
). Finished my 5th scheduled service. But there are some issues as with any other bike.
1) Loud at low speeds - but love it when cruising
2) Stuttering when wet - during rains or after water wash
3) Not as good with a pillion
Only that much I could say negative about.
Now the positives
1) Great weight distribution, great to drive single
2) Good comfort for long drives
3) Good control in traffic (handling and brakes)
4) Good mileage
5) Good looks err.. Great looks
I rode this bike :
From Chennai to Vellore last month at a steady 60 (65 while over taking) and got a mileage of 71.4 kpl !
From Chennai to Vellore three months ago at 40-50 (with pillion) and got a mileage of 65 kpl !
From Chennai to Vellore four months ago at 80-85 (with pillion) and got a mileage of 39 kpl
!
All the returns from Vellore to Chennai @ 65-70 with a mileage of 54-56 kmpl
. Good enough.
The new Discover may be better in performance and mileage, but certainly not in comfort, at least for me.
Thanks guys. You were all very helpful and honest in me choosing this bike. I knew exactly what I was going to get, and that is what I got.Last edited by lywyre; 12-25-2012, 06:30 PM.

Congratulations. Being in Chennai, just keep a check on rusting. Other than that, I don't think you have to worry about much.Originally posted by lywyre View PostI bought this only after going through 130+ pages of this thread and already felt like owning this bike before even I bought it.

Pretty much a no nonsense bike, will keep going despite abuse and harsh riding.

Awesum.... Agree with all your points. But I never got 60 kmpl ever in my 20 months and more than 24K kms of riding.Originally posted by lywyre View PostI bought this only after going through 130+ pages of this thread and already felt like owning this bike before even I bought it.

. Avg was around 55 kmpl. And yes, as Prasanth said.... take care of your silencer especially, which is very prone to rusting.

Rode my friend's Honda Yuga to Vellore on Monday evening, and straight away missed my bike. The bike was good, but only upto 60kph. The seat was wide, but not as comfortable. Only a 110cc bike, but really missed the 5th gear. On the upside the headlight was way better than my SS125.

Battery dead
My bike's battery is half dead. It doesn't self-start and I have to kick start every time.
The horn and indicators work but the battery is not strong enough to start the bike. I took it to the Yamaha service center and apparently they "charged" it but all in vain.
They also said that riding the bike for some time will further charge the battery and it should return to normal. That didn't happen. I ride the bike daily for about 30 Km and it has not been left unattended since the time I bought it in March 2011. The battery didn't last even for 1 year.
Good thing is that the battery is still under warranty and I am planning to claim a replacememt.
Can someone let me know the steps to claim a new battery under warranty?
Also, did someone else also face a problem with the SS125's battery?Signals which are timed for 50 Kmph are also timed for 100 Kmph :)

You must have got the Warranty card of the battery with other documents, while purchasing the bike. Call on the phone no. mentioned on the card. They will attend to your battery.Originally posted by cmahajan View PostMy bike's battery is half dead. It doesn't self-start and I have to kick start every time.

Went to the dealer to complain about the battery. Pearl Yamaha, Kondapur, Hyderabad.Originally posted by cmahajan View PostHmm...let me do that...thanks
They gave me a letter with the dealer's stamp on it and asked me to follow up with Exide myself. This is stupid.
Why should a customer be asked to follow up with the battery manufacturer? Isn't that the dealer's responsibility? I immediately sent a mail to the dealership managing director and also copied the same mail to the yamaha official backoffice mail address.
Got a reply from the dealer, they will look into the matter and apologized for the trouble caused.
Let's see if they actually take some action to replace the useless battery.Signals which are timed for 50 Kmph are also timed for 100 Kmph :)

After a little follow up with the service center, got the faulty battery replaced with a new AMCO battery. Also got a call from Yamaha Motors India confirming if the problem was resolved or not.Originally posted by cmahajan View PostWent to the dealer to complain about the battery. Overall, decent service by Yamaha although I had to do a little follow up and had to go to the service center 3-4 times. Seems all service centers in India need this kind of follow up and no company is able to resolve the warranty issues in a single visit.Signals which are timed for 50 Kmph are also timed for 100 Kmph :)

From my P.O.V, this was actually the way I would have preferred. When my brother's SZ-R ran into battery issues last year, we were made to wait over 8 days for a replacement, and that too, after shooting a mail to the backoffice. I do appreciate the fact that they did come down to our residence to replace the dead battery as the SZR was immobilized (the SZ-R doesn't have KS) and replaced it F.O.C - but the delay caused by logistics was way too long. If we had a letter from Yamaha acknowledging the issue, we could have taken a rick straight to the Exide distributors and we could have replaced that battery in a days' (or max 2 days') time.Biking is not about how many Km/h you put on your Speedo. It's about how many miles you put on your Odo. Ride Safe, Ride Long!

Thankfully, my SS125 does have a kick so I was not stranded when the battery died.Originally posted by bbsrailfan View Post@cmahajan

I was willing to wait for some days to get a replacement battery rather that to visit Exide factory myself (which is located far away from where I live).
Finally managed to get a new battery free of cost. I was happy with the response from Yamaha company (not the dealer) since they kept track of things and verified that the battery was indeed replaced by calling me directly.Signals which are timed for 50 Kmph are also timed for 100 Kmph :)

Please tell me what are the things I need to take care.
Also Run in period how I need to handle it.
Few things which you must look after:
1. Inspect your bike thoroughly before delivery. Make sure there are no scratches etc and all electricals are working correctly.
2. Make sure that the engine number and chassis number on the actual bike match with those on the documentation and the owner's manual.
3. Make sure you do get the warranty card duly stamped and signed by the dealer.
4. Make sure you understand properly about the free and paid service intervals.
5. Make sure you get some fuel in the tank when leaving the dealership.
6. Do get the contact number of the dealer's service center and spare parts shop. This comes in handy later.
7. Make sure you get the contact number/email id of the dealership manager/owner. This is useful in case you run into issues later and service center guys do not respond properly. You can always escalate the matter to the dealership manager/owner. The Yamaha company contact details will be printed on your user's manual.
8. Make sure you get all accessories as promised by the dealer. If something is not available at the time of delivery, get a written note from the dealer saying that they will provide it free of cost when it becomes available (e.g. seat cover, handle grips etc)
Some other things:
1. Make sure you keep the warranty card/pollution card/service manual safe as this is absolutely essential later.
2. Make sure you NEVER ride the bike without a helmet at least. You should get as much safety gear as you can and wear it always
3. Make sure you don't ride the bike without getting it properly registered with the RTO office. As soon as you get the registration, put it up on your number plates.
Regarding run in, you can go through the numerous threads on xBhp which will explain the concept of run-in as best as possible.
Enjoy your ride and ride safe !!!
Cheers !!
