Thanks so much for typing such a long explaination brother. However, I must clarify that my bike smokes more like a auto rikshaw than a nice steamy kettle of chai in the starts. Now it has become frequesnt in the day, like every start it smokes. And it has increased after the service. Along with that I can here a sharp screech during the first crank of the starter motor. This screech or whistle can be hered under hard accelation too and its coming from under the tank. Fuelling is sometimes good and sometimes erratic while riding but the smoke has increased and its not subjected to the first start of the day. Its hapeni g on everystart. It goes away once the engine warms. Its not the faulty piston ring wala continuous white smoke throughout the day with engine running wala smoke though. Its grey and it comes out for a min or 30 secs of the first start. Please clarify. Once again, thank you so much.
P.s - Bike has run 5550 kms in total and 250 kms in my hand since the problem develoved and I took the ownership of the motorcycle.
There you have it. If you observe smoke each time you stop after parking irrespective of the engine temperature, your valve oil seals are bust. Once the engine warms up again, the valves expand and provide a good seal, and hence no smoke. Get all your valve seals replaced along with new valves and shims. If you continue to ride like this, eventually you will end up burning all the oil in the engine and eventually would lead to engine seizure with even an expensive bill. Erratic RPM can be solved by replacing the AF box.
Cheers!

Re: KTM Duke 390 - Ownership Reviews and Experiences
Hi fellow riders,
My duke390 2014 is having a strange sound at morning starting up. It is like a tan tan tan sound which lasts for around first 4 5 minutes. I have checked it is not from exhaus but couldn't figure out where it is coming from. Just thought to ask if anyone else faced the same and possible cause.
Another issue is rampant which is tank vibration which is a buzzing sound coming from near tank lid. If it has to be replaced then can I know what all do I have to replace?
Thanks in advance.

For the engine sound, it can mean different things. If you can share an audio clip from YouTube it'd be helpful in analyzing the issue. Secondly, the buzz that you observe on the tank is from the fuel tank key cover flap. It's what causes that frequency buzz. The fuel cap itself is fine, no need of replacing it. If you can find a round washer like magnet that can cover inner portion of the key flap and stick it, it would arrest the noise, by preventing the flap from vibrating.

Hi, guys I did change the battery and I am still facing the cold start issues. Now what should be the course of action, when I got the bike serviced svc mechanic mentioned that this type of issue could be because of shims clearance.
I have made a video of the starting issue I am facing, I can only get the bike started if I give some throttle and hold it for about 2 mins. If I leave the throttle before the engine the engine is warmed up, then the bike just dies.

Check your throttle body for carbon accumulation, spark plug and stepper motor. A gummed up throttle body would cause the exact same thing and so is a faulty stepper motor, which isn't allowing enough air to the engine. Clean the throttle body thoroughly first and observe if it solves the issue, if it doesn't, then check your stepper motor. Make sure your plugs are not gummed up either. If you haven't replaced your spark plug, it's the time to do so.

did u try to the diagnostics on their tool to check if it showed up any errors/abnormal values ?
try to clean the throttle-body, idle control stepper motor and see how it goes. or maybe swap with a known good or new idle control motor.
if these don't fix it, then maybe dig in to the valve clearances.

Yes, the mechanic did hook up the diagnostic tool to the bike but it did not throw any errors when I got it serviced recently. But I will be visiting the svc again specially to get this issue checked, this issue only happens with the cold starts so they may keep the bike to check what's wrong. I hope its only the idle control motor and not the messed up valve clearances, as I do not want to get my engine opened up. Will post the findings after I visit svc.

It would be cam chain tensioner as well. Mine had similar sound and got it replaced, costs 250rs. Check this video for more details.

See, it's better to get your valve clearances inspected now rather than later, and no they don't require opening up the complete engine. It requires removal of the fuel tank and valve cover that's it. Poor shim clearances would cause poor performance, poor mileage and stalling and unwanted noises from the engine. Get your throttle body checked/cleaned, along with spark plug cleaned or replaced depending on the kays run.
Cheers!

Thanks for the detailed suggestions. Yes, this is what I am thinking of doing. Will get the bike checked and share the observations.
Re: KTM Duke 390 - Ownership Reviews and Experiences
I ordered foam grips (sold by the name of "Anti vibration grips") from aliexpress. Installed them and they have to an extent, maybe by 30-40% reduced vibrations felt on handle grips. Next I am thinking of installing similar grips on foot pegs and brake pedal. Meanwhile, hating the machine for its city behavior. I can very rarely go above 2nd gear due to traffic, engine heat makes the situation worse. This mad machine is meant to be a highway mile-eater rather being a city commuter.

Hi abhi, thank you for the anti vibration grips information. Can you differentiate it between the normal foam ones we get locally or is it any materially different? Because the ones sold in AXPRS seems to be normal foam, only slightly thicker. Secondly, yes, the bike hate B2B traffic and crawling. She sings on her own, on the highway, and highway is where she is supposed to be.

Hi, Quality aspect will have tobe tested over a period of time, I am saying this because I had installed similar foam grips on my P180 and they lasted not more than 6 months. Though the foam of this one is thicker, but I paid around 100 including shipping for this, so I suspect the quality would be any better over time than the ones available locally. I have also ordered radiator guard for 950 Rs which is yet to be delivered. Will update once I receive it.
Btw, anybody knows good wind deflector for our 390's.
Also, can we install old Pulsar type horns without additional relay setup?

This post is important hence plz pardon for back to back posts.
Someone on FB Duke 390 group posted that if your mobile has OIS (optical image stabilized) Camera then you should not use the mobile holders available for bikes as the OIS system gets screwed due to the continuous vibrations from mobile holder and bike. The one who posted owned iPhone .
