  • [Ownership Thread]: Pulsar NS 160

My cousin has bought a new pulsar NS 160 2 days ago. The bike looks stunning just like it's elder sibling NS 200. Switchgear is just awesome with the backlight switches. Headlight is very powerful along with the DRLs. Clutch operation is smooth and gears shift incredibly. Front brake is cool and has that sharp bite. Suspension is simply superb. Moreover the ride quality is very good.

          Re: Pulsar NS 160

After taking it from the delivery, we were riding few hours during night time. On the next day, after riding it for quite sometime, engine heats up quite a lot. This issue is normal for a new bike or else is there any problem regarding the cooling system of the engine ??

                Hi,

Since it is a new engine, the metal to metal contact will be more in the first few runs and it will definitely heat up. There will be a small sort of burning smell when you are so close to it. There is nothing to worry about and when the engine sets in you will get rid of this extra heat.

                Hi,

I know this will be a late reply, because by now you may have finished your running in period. Running in period is really a important thing for any engine. Some say that now a days the engine finishes a small sort of running period in the manufacturing process itself. True or not, it is better for us to follow it in a proper way. According to NS160 you should not cross 3500 RPM for the first 1000 Kms and 5000 RPM for the next 1000 Kms. Afterwards there is no limit specified but it is better to increase RPM gradually.

                I bought a NS160 last month 18th,
Completed first service in 475 km,
And finished the first half of running period. Now in the second half & ODO reads 1400 Kms. It was really difficult to keep this beast under 44 kmph (under 3500 RPM). But i like to maintain a proper running in to set the engine properly. I have followed it always, from the first bike i owned. Now i take it in around 50 kmph and will gradually move to 55 & then 60 kmph as the ODO moves towards 2000 km. It really runs butter smooth until 45 and a small sort of "ttrrrr" tend to arise when it is beyond 50. Hope that is changes to a smooth "rrrr" afterwards. Can anyone post new updates regarding the smoothness & engine sound ?

Yes my running in period is almost done i have ridden 1200km so far for first 1000km i tried soft break in and for next 500 i'm going to do hard break in.. Bike is performing well so far but i found that if u ride over 80kmph for long period mileage is horrible it return around 30km per lit but if u stay below 80kmph mileage is decent around 42-43km P lit in city overall for now im happy with the bike.

You are taking it to a horrible 80 at just 1200km in ODO. I wish that you dont continue it. You must be running bajaj dtsi oil in it & have covered 700 km after first service. The so called 'superb engine oil was' first boasted for a 10k run and now they insist for a change in 5k. It is not even fit for a 1000 km run. Did you notice any change in engine sound, pick up, smoothness of the bike when it is compared to the time just after first service ? In anyways 30kmpl is really worrying, I get 54kmpl. (Normal run is around 50 kmph, short 55 - 57 - 59 included at times)

I didn't felt any difference in engine sound smoothness and pickup but now I'm concerned about the mileage if u are getting 54-55 than I thing something is wrong... Are u sure about ur mileage.. And which engine oil u r going to use after ur next service

I thing u r right about the engine oil my engine oil has turned transparent brown already if its a 10k km oil than it should atleast remain clear till 2k

I will change to motul (if rich) or castrol, but will never use bajaj dtsi oil (HP), because it is sure to degrade ur bikes perfomance. I have never used it in my pulsar 150, (after first 2 services) it ran 148000 kms, i travel in 90+ daily on my way to office & back (xpress highway), but still returned with 44 kmpl. I request you to complete your running in under 5000 RPM. After first 1000km i moved to 50+ kmph, & i m very sure about my mileage. Even if i move up to 60 kmph (after 2000km) i am confident to get atleast 50 kmpl. Just follow some simple steps for a better mileage.... 😊

I LUBRICATED THE CHAIN WITH MOTUL C2 LAST SUNDAY, IT IS REALLY A GOOD ONE. IT HAS A SHINY APPEARANCE & VERY STICKY NATURE. WHEN SPRAYED IT RUNS VERY EASILY IN BETWEEN THE PLATES, AND THE CHAIN ROTATION HAS BECOME SMOOTH. IT WAS DONE BEFORE BY BAJAJ GUYS AT FIRST SERVICE. LET ME CHECK HOW MUCH LONG DOES IT STAY ON.

Nearly 1000kms after changing the oil,
The smoothness has affected a bit, the engine sound has changed, and the engine braking has increased a lot [emoji35]. The oil color is still golden with decreased transparency.

I think motul is a better option, I'm never going to use bajaj oil again because I too had same experience with my xcd 135 when I used gulf premium it has way better performance than bajaj desi less vibrations nd very smooth. Me and my cousin(he owns a 200NS) both are going to use motul on next service. N u r right about mileage keeping her below 5k rpm is healthy for now and mileage. 👍👍
