Re: Hero Moto Splendor/Joy/CD-Dawn/Passion

All, thanks for patiently answering my newbie questions. Really appreciate it as I really don’t have any other person to reach out to learn motorcycle maintenance things.

My question today is if it is okay to use 10w-40 oil for a CD Deluxe?

I bought 1L Shell Full Synthetic oil for an Activa 125 at home and the mechanic I took it to asked to not use 10w-40 in Activa as clutch plate and drive belt will prematurely wear out. So used the Honda Semi Synth 10w-30 he recommended instead.

Now wondering if I can use that already bought 10w-40 for my CD Deluxe.

Any rework or Brake plate need to be replaced ?

Please Guide

Solved this problem. My mechanic ask me to buy steel gear set & he fitted it

now seems solved

Sir, do I have to change the lock set & tank cap to solve the issue ? my bike has original lock set & its working fine, thanks to lubricating it with dry graphite powder as advised by you. Or should i just change rubber ring of tank cap and/or any other part ? Thanks.
And your Joy has completed more than 4 Lakh kms.. Simply wow. Your Joy is not a bike.. its a Titan. Amazing

I acquired one recently from a relative and as I had no experience with similar 100cc motorcycles before and was trying how the gears are setup. It’s surprising that even 4th gear works on speed breakers some times with half clutch. I know it’s not good for the engine and was only trying out to see what’s the lowest 4th gear can go.

I also shift up pretty early generally in motorcycle and cars and this motorcycle seem to be made for me with me with me being on 4th gear in no time at all.

Is this normal for these bikes or it has become like this because of previous usage?
It's pretty normal for bikes of these capacity to have smaller ratios. You'll easily find yourself shifting at these figures:

7km/hr: 1st to 2nd
22-25 km/hr: 2nd to 3rd
37-40ish (you can comfortably reach 40 in 3rd gear): 3rd to 4th

In 4th gear, half clutch can take you as low as 15km/hr. Post that, your chain will start making noise and loosening itself.

But isn't that too early? Asking because the other one that has done 1.5L is still on stick internals, even the clutch for that matter. Only service done is oil change and fork overhaul.

We did suspect clutch but there's not slipping at WOT in final gear under load.

Yesterday oil was changed to Rimula R4 and my friend reported that the motorcycle is running spectacularly as the gear shifts etc have become smoother than before, though top end has not been checked so far as its raining here now almost constantly, for the same reason I'm also not riding my CT100B and stuck to P220 for better road grip.

But somehow I feel that the old pre-y2k splendor has got a raw mechanical feel to it. I have ridden one nonstop from Chalakudy to Pollachi via valparai, ( 130 km ). The engine doesn't heat-up at all. It can consistently cruise at 70-80 kmph, no vibrations and returns 70 plus mileage.

Meanwhile my passion pro gets all heated up, may be due to the catcon. Max mileage it give is 65kmpl that too on strict economy speeds. If i try 70-80 kmph the mileage drops to less than 55 kmpl.

Once I was taken away by surprise when I was doing a friendly race with my friends during my college days. The scenario is like we 6 people on three bikes- my '10 passion pro, a 06' bajaj platina and a '97 splendor. The splendor was carrying the heaviest load as the pillon was 110 kg.

We are at the front line of a traffic signal on the Kochi- Coimbatore highway. First one to reach the next signal ( roughly 2 km away ) would win.

3........2..........1 and the race starts. The Platina enthusiastically Jumps ahead with a wheelie. 0-60, platina wins hands down. Post 60, the passion pro shoots ahead of the platina and the splendor also cathes the platina.

Now I was nearing the finishing line. the passion pro is doing 90 kmph, wide open throttle. The platina was already out of the league and had vanished from my RVM.

I could see the splendor was going away in the RVM. But wait ! Instead of going away, it was chasing me down. My passion pro is pinned at 90, refusing to go any further.

And at about 300 m to the finish line, the splendor gives me a nice fly-by at 105 kmph

I was like....IMPOSSIBLE !

So it makes sense to buy and restore an old splendor as it will only cost half amount of buying a new commuter bike. And I dont find a single present generation 100-110 cc bike which can easily keep up with 150cc+ bikes on the highway and still return 70+ mileage and also has a lot of character.
Tune your carb properly.its too lean tuned as a result engine is heating a lot. Also mileage is less due to too lean setting.

I mean the bike is serviced & taken care of regularly. The riding style & conditions are the same as before, but now it feels like the tank is getting empty faster. The speedometer is not working (some very costly sensor is faulty according to Service Center), so cant measure total Kms ridden on a full tank. I have checked the spark plug, air filter, chain, tyres etc. They are fine. The carb tuning also seems good as the bike runs fine.
Also there is sometimes petrol smell when I sit on the bike. I checked for any leaks but didnt find any. So what could be the problem ?
sibun sir, your Joy has completed so many Kms & years. So have you faced anything similar to this with your Joy? And please guide on how to check if petrol is evaporating from my bike. Should some part in petrol tank cap be replaced( like the rubber ring) etc. ? Or if there is anything else that is needed to be done for the peace of mind, then please advise.
Thanks.
I have changed the lock set once which also changed the tank cap. Even my bike had petrol evaporation due to tank cap rubber getting hard. Infact my bike had so much loose tank cap that the cap will rattle at 50kph. Changed cap and it was awesome.

So share something about the bike. This group needs experience about the bike. Today's kids don't ride splendor. They directly go for 200+. So splendor ownership experience has become a treasure hunt.

A friend owns a 2010 Splendor and the things can haul ass like no other even after clocking 1.5L on the stock cylinder, within Kerala roads I can't keep up with him on my CT100B due to the Splendors superior roll-on acceleration, the guy can and has run circles around me.

But at the same time a while ago I had gone on an interstate run with another friend who owns a more recent Splendor with self start 2013 I guess, the thing refuses to cross 80kmph on the interstate, has only 55k on the odo, while my CT100B can scream on the interstate at speedo indicated speeds nearing the 120kmph mark(100kmph true speed measured with Sigma cyclocomputer).

Payload was similar as I'm heavy(About 120kgs) and carrying everyones luggage whereas the Splendor was hauling 2 rider. We couldn't try the other way around as the CT100B handles like a pit-bike, front goes up when accelerating hard with a pillion whereas the Splendor rides like a true motorcycle no BS or drama.

We didn't check FE then but on an earlier instance where I'd rode at WOT for the better part of 8k km's on the GQ circuit the CT100B returned a FE of over 60kmpl as the fuel expense was between 8~9k, don't recall the exact figures but when riding within Kerala my FE seems to drop hard to about 50kmpl mostly due to riding style and short stroke nature of engine whereas the Splendor maintains consistent FE when ridden on our challenging roads, the earlier mentioned Splendor with about 1.5L km's returns over 60Kmpl when ridden on the MC route shuttling between TVM and Adoor and you know how irritating the traffic conditions can be on that route.

Splendors seem to be the only model that is immune to the year end price drop due to demand, back in 2017 when I was urgently looking for a commuter as my Wego developed a cracked chassis after a bad wreck Venad Motors quoted 10~15k discounts on the Splendor Classic for previous year makes, I would've gone for it but the exchange rate on the Wego was way too low and that meant I'd have to shell out money I didn't have at the time, so went over to Sarathy Bajaj and they were kind enough to offer exchange value of the IDV of the Wego as it was TL anyways, hence making it possible for me to go home with the CT100B.

Though to this day I'd still say that if money wasn't an issue I'd be on a Splendor Classic instead of the CT100B, plus the lack of a rear seat on the Classic was something I was looking forward to.
Yes splendor and it's members like cd,joy, passion have a beautiful chassis. No matter how much the load.they will never lift front and also will not oversteer on ghats.

And that splendor not going above 80 is because at 55k his engine will be needing decarb, clutch plate changes and timing chain change. Happened with me when I was new to joy. After 40k bike didn't pull, nor crossed 70. It used to make a racket after 60. Head cleaning, valve polishing and clutch work did wonders. Bike became smooth like the day it was bought.

And I still say after 4.15 Lacs km joy is still fresh as I have done regular maintenance.

But I haven't done anything that is not needed. My mantra is do what is needed. Don't do anything over the top.
It will destroy the bike.

Thanks for the information brother. It is especially good for people like me using 10w30 oil which almost loses all its viscosity at 1000 km itself

And thanks for being an inspiration for us. I have read most of your team-bhp travelogues of the interstate runs on your CT100B and Wego.

You have proved that a commuter motorcycle is no less than a sports tourer. Only your average speed will be low but you would get much more range.

And the slower you travel the more you enjoy and soak in the beauty of nature. Especially on our kerala roads it feels much better to tour on a commuter than to tour on a 200cc + bike as no matter how you ride, the maintainable average speed is just 55-60 kmph.

To second Dumbo, check SP tip and Exhaust tip, if both are dry then move on to inspecting for oil leaks if that is clear as well then simply ignore and ride on. Make sure to change at 2k intervals or less.

My P220 looses quite a bit of oil on 2k drain intervals, but then mine has quite a few oil leaks, the upside being SP and Exhaust tip are bone dry.
