I am looking for a complete makeover and so want to replace the tyres and the rims...i dont know much about tyres but can i up the size of the rear tyre and rim... I am ok if the rear suspension and the suspension arm needs to be replaced ....i will replace everything,,money is not an issue.... but i need meatier tyres at back at-list as meatier as a CBR 250R tyres.... the bike will go for repainting(Rs3000)(silver) by this month end and the engine will be opened and will be sent for chroming(Rs5000). I want to retain spoke rims....no alloyes. please guide me.
    Thank you
    Barkha
The plan that you have is very much doable .... I have seen a couple of Thunderbirds in Bangalore like that ..... you need to find a guy who mods bikes , as a lot of things has to be changed to fit a thick tyre in the back ...

But one question i have about chroming the engine. Will the chroming last , and can you say something more about this , as i also want to go for chroming. and one more thing, where did u give your engine for chroming ??

      Hi surajit.

The chroming will be done in Rajmundhari, about 300kms from vizag. chroming will be done for clutch cover and the other cover of left side also. engine head(top past of engine...engine fins will also be chromed(i was told it will last about 2 years but depends upon how i keep the bike. the part that will not last for chroming is the engine cooling fins.....about 6 months as the chrome will crack under extreme heat.

        Hey thanks
Yah i was thinking the same. Engine heat damages the chroming. But the factory made chrome lasts because they use different metal for the engine that time.
Any way have a nice time with your modification ..... Best of Luck to you , and dont forget to post you experience. A lot of guys here will surely find your experience a lot helpful

        • Guys in the manual for Tbird I remember seeing that the service interval is 6000 KM when I booked it. But the users of the bike recommend 3K KM. What do you guys do? 6K or 3K?

i dont know how old is your bike, or which version is it ... if it is the new thunder bird twin spark, then u have to follow the manual till 10000 km ... then its 6k . The new bullets are different. Dont compare them with the old ones . The engine oil is also a good one that will last for 6k km for sure. Just keep a watch on the oil before you start the bike in the morning.

If your bike is a new one then no need to change the oil before 6k.

As rightly mentioned, the Engine oil quality is good enough to last for 6K. Now, I strongly recommend a servicing at 3k in case any of the following conditions hold true for you:

              1. Driving in the Ghat roads: If you drive on the ghat roads with lot of hairpin bends, chances are there that your clutchplates need a check-up. I have seen lot of experienced riders who don't do half-clutch riding but still their clutch plates get damaged because of ghat roads. So, a must check in case you are planning for a long ride after 3k.

              2. Check out the Engine oil level. Though the new TBTS is a good machine, but I have experienced oil leaking problem in my TBTS which I could fix up recently. Even if small amount of oil leakage happens, it would reduce the engine oil level substantially after 3k. So, no need to change the oil, but if required, please top up.

              3. Drum Brake check: Check whether you need to tighten it up a bit.

              4. Brake fluid check: I had to top up Brake oil after 3k.

              5. In case you are driving in monsoon rains, do check up the chain condition.

I guess it helps. TBTS is a gift of god for highway cruising. And keeping it well serviced adds to the joy of cruising.

              Happy motoring.

              • tackey service by royal Efield Vizag.

I had my TBCI serviced at vizag, i paid Rs2000 for oil change, new switch gear for LHS,genral servicing and washing. took delevery same day in evening. i was doing 60Kmph when suddenly i was faced with a big speedbraker, i pressed the clutch and brake to shift down but to my disbelife the gear lever was missing from the bike...i stopped the bike ,walked for 1 km in search of the gearlever but didnt get it. asked for a torch from a shop and found the gearlever hanging below the bike.well i placed the gear lever and pushed it in with a peace of cloth between it and the nut, i thought my luck returned...but no..as soon i kicked the bike to start the kick came off...i was fuming with anger but then...fixed it same way as the gear lever. took the bike to a local garage. fixed everything in Rs30 and i made a promised my self never to service my bike in authorised dealer ever again.!!!!!
one the good side after service my is running smooth but the battery is dead..any suggestion on bartties please?

                  Gear leaver hanging

Thats really shocking ..... I dont know about the service centers at vizag, but what i have seen in Bangalore is that, the company service center at BTM, Bangalore are pretty good, not bad. I see almost 80-90 bikes coming daily for servicing .... And i have seen that they are really very skilled.

But i have a question here .... u did not see this before :-O

                    • Hey guys, sorry I could not finish the bike review in time. If you have questions do ask me.

Anyone know who does modifications of Bullets in Hyderabad. I want to change stock silencer to something better. A larger fuel tank and possible Alloys with Tubeless tyres. I have seen a few designs on the road. And the perception that alloys dont go well with bullets proved me wrong.

                      Appreciate your replies.

Pray that I ride to Leh this year.

Authorized dealer's are the same case with almost every manufacturer. My personal experience is that road side mechanics with a passion for their job do an excellent job You got to hunt for one.

The stock Exide batteries are not a choice for me. Search on battery sites for maintainence free ones like Amron or Tata. What is the specs? 12V 14Amp ?

Again, a custom one or that of TBTS 500 (once it's available.. ) ?

Really ! Can you pls post some pics, if possible. I personally feel that those common white alloy don't look good on bullet. (just IMPO...) Have you thought of chrome plating / powder coating alloys ??

Really Doesnt matter if it looks better or sounds better. The stock ones are too low IMO.

Custom. Im just looking for someone who knows a mod shop.

No, I dont have pics, you may see some on the roads. I saw a Classic 500 with alloys today, like the ones on the Harleys. They looked fantastic.

Aah this site I've been to a lot.

Anyway my mod requests are specific to my Leh trip. A larger tank will help me with range. A shorter or upswept silencer will help when crossing river flows. Yet I know a guy who has been up there with the stock silencer of TBTS. Anything is possible, I'm just trying to perfect it.
