All the while there was enough oil in your bike however you topped it up again and again. Not your fault. I experienced the same thing. Took my bike to the service center and he explained to me how to exactly check the engine oil level.

Either you Let the Engile Idle for 10 min or ride the bike for few kilometers. Kill the Engine, put the bike in center stand and then you will see the correct oil level. There were hundereds of instance where I saw the oil level below normal or never even saw oil level. So nowadays what I do is. After I go for a short ride, like to the shop or to my office, I put my bike on center stand and check. I see the correct oil level. My bike leaks oil like crazy. I mean, its only from the bottom, near the bolt. Its like when the engine is hot, the oil drips. When Engine cools down no more oil drip. Inspite all this, my engine oil level never goes down below normal.

Once the service center guys put some sealant when oil leak was found near the silencer gasket area and near the spark plug area. That issue is solved. But the oil drip from the bottom, irritates me. Only because it spoils my house owners garage

Otherwise I really don't care because the bike is just fine.

You need to remove excess oil otherwise may lead to other issues.
Thanks for your inputs @madelikeagun! I plan to drain the oil tomorrow morning to a correct level before I take it to service station. Need to resolve the leak issue. Can't wait for another 800 kms to my next service.

Now that I am educated on checking the levels, I will be more careful next time on wards.

    take care and ride safe

Dont put excess oil into your bike .. that may lead to the oil seal breakage.
So if you feel that the oil level is down, then show it to the service center . DOnt refill just like that

And one more thing, people who are feeling that the oil is leaking from the bottom, make it sure that its not the chain oil. A lot of times a lot of people get confused with this.

Also check if the kicker oil seal is broken or not. I had the same problem, and got it replaced. Its a big hectic thing, it takes almost 3-4 hrs to replace that seal.

      • Rear Carrier

        Hello fellow cruisers,

I intend to install a rear carrier. Its a small extension behind the back rest. The carrier will serve purpose of carrying a tent of light weight bags or a small fuel can.

Anyone have any experience fixing one of those found in Royal Enfield Zone - Carriers for Royal Enfield Bullet, Electra, Machismo, Thunderbird, Standard :: Royal Enfield Zone, New Delhi, India ?

        Appreciate your time.

        • Hello Riders

I am expecting my TB in few days (8-10 acc. to dealer) and by reading this thread, most of my queries are getting sorted out. Thanks!!
Am really becoming anxious to grip the accelerator!
Is it really needed to keep Rev. below 2K ? and for how many KMs?
What about driving in extreme traffic conditions?
Does the engine gets heated too quickly?

Since 1st day of getting my TBTS, I have rev. above 2K. So far, no problem detected. But, it will be great to keep the rev below 3K till 500km and will bve great if the same can be continued till 2000km. Its difficult to handle a beast like TBTS in extremely congested traffic, but I have never experienced overheating problem.

By the way, I have finished the 500km quota in 1st two days and 2000km quota in 10 days, so did not have that restriction of 2000km at the back of my mind for long.

Not sure as I have not checked. You may take your Bull to the spare dealer and check it out from there. It's just one screw to remove and open the headlamp case.

                • Oil Leakage + Oil Overfill - Interim report

                  Hi All,

Earlier this week I had reported Oil leakage through the middle part of Cylinder ( I guess gasket issue ) during my weekend ride. I filled oil, but accidently I over filled the same. I was suppose to drain the same and take it to the dealer.

                  Here's further update:

1st May was a holiday across Maharashtra and I used it as an opportunity to drain the excess oil. You need a 13" spanner to open the drain nut. Its easy to locate under the engine. I first tried with the open spanner, then with closed one. Its difficult to open with both open and closed spanner as there is very little space between the drain nut and adjacent engine wall. Its kind of half open and half covered on the sides. Finally, I was able to open it with 13" ratchet attachment. Was little cautious while draining the oil. Multiple newspapers spread on ground. A large 3 litres tin box that can fit correctly under the drain nut and not obstructed by main stand was checked before I started the exercise.

Slowly draining of oil took over an hour to ensure that I don't drain the oil too much. Finally tighten the drain nut at desired level. Its not very straight forward exercise but multiple iterations of draining, stopping and checking the levels led to the desired level.

Finally entire engine was cleaned, drain nut cleaned and checked for any drips. None were seen. Took the bike out for a spin for around 15 - 20Kms.
Service center was closed as expected. Checked for any oil leakage after a couple of hours. No spots below drain nut. No oil leakage visible from the cylinder. Engine as clean as it was earlier before the ride. no traces of oil streaks on fins or on the rubber as seen during the weekend ride.

Looks like the leakage is happening only at high speeds excess of 70kmph as only couple of times I had exceeded for less than a minute each time may had lead to oil leakage.

Planning to take bike to office on Friday (40+ kms to and fro) and check for oil leakage again and finally go to Service Center on Saturday for further inspection.

I will update further early next week.

                  take care and ride safe

                  Rajesh

Why do you want to go for the autopal/ambassador reflector ?

I am using the Phillips xtreme 60/55 for almost 9k kms. Still did not face this problem. and almost 60% is night riding.
Why dont you just go ahead and fit the new thunderbird reflector only?

Just try it out first. no need to change the reflector.

Since madelikeagun mentioned in his post his bulb had burned a portion of the reflector i did not want to take any chances. Now that you have been using it for a long time now i guess i'll stick with the stock one and go ahead with the Phillips xtreme 60/55.

You just reduced the cold viscosity range. Which means I do not know how your bike with respond during the cold winters. The 20w number is the cold viscosity and the 50 number is the viscosity at 100 centigrade.

Right now, its sweaty summer and you won't have any issues. I would always use the oil rating recommended by manufacturer. You are basically killing the warranty of the engine "if" the manufacturer finds out.

Will it ruin your engine? Definetly not. But I would'nt take that risk.

i've been lucky so far dat im d only heavyweight on the bike......... ! all my pillions r pretty lightweight havent felt the need to cross 2k as bike does 60kmph at 2k rpm only! i got my thunderbird manual from the showroom only yesterday, n 60 is the manufacturer recommedation. newayz, all dat patience i've developed during last 7 months of waiting is being pretty useful for now

wont........ bikes r way too different. bt it jst so hapens dat both are the only affordable cruisers in india ...........
Regarding helmet, I have the Studds, downtown (1900 Rs) and I am pretty impressed and satisfied with the product. It's not like those old studds helmets which was just a piece of metal. But you are looking for world class quality, sure - nobody stopping you from getting a LS2 or Cross.
Yep, i checked out the downtown and it looked pretty good. But personally, i preferred the design of the rhyno and scorpion more. Where studds scores negative points IMO is dat the size of helmet is much larger than normal........ end result will b rider looking like one of those big head toys.......... i dont think this is case with all studds helmets, only rhyno and scorpion. i finally ordered ls2 from bikegear.in and am in d middle of yet another waiting period !
As for GPS, I found Map my India GPS to be the best. With the amount of Local information it has, like ATMs, Lodges, Hotels, Restaurants, Dhabas, Govt Bulding, Mechanic shops, shopping malls, all the small tiny roads, etc. This is the best GPS money can buy. I love the MMI 20K model you were looking for. It is fully water proof and comes with a Mobile charging station of its own. Your fellow riders can also tune into the specified Radio frequency from their Mobile radio and listen to the Voice guidance system. What more do you need. Due to its heavy cost, I have the Road pilot 2 which costs around 8K. So I got an external Bike charging station for 250/- from IdeaForge India and the GPS works fine as they are continously charged while on the run. The GPS battery is 1Amp while the Idea Forge output is only 500mAh. This is the only drawback I have seen in this setup. But hey, if you have the money to spend 20K, knock yourself out.
thanx for the MMI review! i wanted to get trailblazer outright....... bt den i came across this thread
                            HTML Code:
                            http://www.indiamike.com/india/buses-automobiles-motorcycles-and-bicycles-f117/mapmyindia-trailblazer-gps-experience-anyone-t125678/
so i thought better to avoid it and get the software installed on some budget garmin.gps is still a few months away.......... need to save for that! bt i've already ordered for a RAM mount from ebay and ideaforge charger so that i can atleast hit the road with my mobile's agps! will surely update about progress in dis matter

My TBTS is like a week old, i handled her wid butter fingers for the first two days. Now i dont really feel the weight wen im riding, mayb its coz im 6'2'' or else is jst got used to it! i dunno abt the 2k rpm thing...... bt its sumthing i decided after observing my friend's tbts touch 60kmph at 2k rpm in 5th gear. bike is not really suited for traffic conditions IMO, bt u'll surely get used to it. i've observed that my engine gets a bit hot when bike is stuck in stop n go traffic. The little faults the bike has disappear to the back of ur mind once u hit the road n listen to that thump!

Lastly, hyderabad riders, RE brand showroom at Erragadda is organizing a 280km to Adilabad on 12may wid night stay dere........ i dont know whether this is RE/showroom effort, but it sure seems like a good initiative to me........ will b missin out on it though They are planning to do stuff like this monthly, are rides being organized at other places also ??

i am in mumbai it was only last year the temprature dropped below 15 degrees in mumbai so in the morning when i used to start my bike i used to pull the choke idle run for 2 minutes then used to ride right now it is sweating summer temprature is above 20 degrees

so what do you recomend should i change the engine oil immediately or continue with it for next 2500 km and switch back to manufacturer recomended engine oil? and recently my 10 month old thunderbird had developed some major engine problem my bike was lying at the service station for 10 days engine was fully opened and 4000 rupees worth parts were replaced(it is under warranty so i did not pay 4000 rupees) the service station guys told me they had changed gaskets, piston rings, timing gears etc.

                              • how to change engine oil in UCE

is there a DIY pictorial manual, video or anything which shows how to change the engine oil of UCE engine cause if you check TBTS manual it clearly tells you that the engine refil qty. is 2.35 ltrsl. i am asking this question becasue when the garage mechanic open the drain nut to remove engine oil approx. 1 ltr. of engine oil came out where did the rest of 1.35 ltr of engine oil went so he opened the nut below the gear box and the rest of engine oil flows out. this is really confusing RE tells just open the refiller cap pour the engine oil and check the level in window but none of them tells that you need to open the nut below the gear box for the oil to completely drain out of the engine and while filling also only 1 ltr. approx goes from the filler cap and the window shows that it has maxed the desired level then why is manual showing 2.35 ltrs. of refil qty.
