Tappet/Crank chatter? In a Ninja 250R? I'm not so sure...

@bluevolt : so if it is tappet/crank chatter, what do you think the mechanics need to do to get rid of the annoying sound? and could you indicate the reason why this chatter starts in the first place? - Thanks.

Sorry, I don't have a answer to your question... I said what I said before because I normally associate tappet/valve chatter and the like with a Royal Enfield engine and not a brand new Ninja 250R.

Are you sure it is not your fuel tank whistling? That is normal and happens from time to time. Before jumping to any conclusion, just try and isolate the source of the sound first and then take remedial action.

Thank you MG! A couple of hours, but absolutely worth it. And one gets comfortable with the bike too after opening it up!

Thanks, but I am not a very meticulous guy in everyday life though there are times when I chose to be. One has to be careful with a bike like that!
And you're welcome to pop in anytime - preferably the weekends, though...

Thank you Satyen! Great suggestion, but even if I did create a new thread, it will get flooded pretty soon

I feel (my personal opinion and only mine) that the windscreen sticker looks better than the fender one! And yes, I thought I might have a run-in with the cops here.

Nope, no sound. What kind of sound is it? Are you able to exactly pinpoint the source of the sound? Did you check all your bolts and stuff on the body? Side cover properly fastened into the grommets? Something loose in your under seat storage? Spare bulbs/fuse loose under the seat? Chain? Fuel tank vacuum lock whistle?

Could be anything, but if you know where it is coming from, it will be easier to isolate and rectify.
@bluevolt : i have a feeling it comes from the engine...cause i dont think anything is loose(bolts...etc) & the chatter only starts @ 8000 rpm & stops @9000 rpm. Incase it would be some bolts then the sound would go on even post 9000 rpm right up to 12500 rpm..rite? Its not the chain for sure. The fuel tank whistle is the sound that comes from the fuel tank right when you insert & turn your bike key to ON right ?

If this was my bike and the sound was not very loud or irritating and stopped after 9,000 RPM, I would not think much about it.

I was not talking about the beep you hear during the start up sequence. The sound you hear is probably from the tank releasing gases through its vents. This can happen anytime, from the time you are riding or even when you park it. I hear it too sometimes too, and it is a Ninja 250R thing.

I dont know wether it is from the engine or some loose nut/screw. At 10000, 11000 & 12000 rpm the sound dissapears. I am quite worried about this sound. Any advice? I have spoken to the service manager in pune & he is comming to mumbai on friday morning & will inspect my bike. Any of you guys hear any sound form your bikes? - Thanks.
RELAX ! I have that in caps cause you are way too worked up. And that happens.

Its no tappets or anything of that sort.

As you run in the engine the engine sounds will go on changing with due course of time and kms.

You have mentioned the sound/noise to be a chiming one in your original post. Somehwere down the lane you mentioned of a chatter.
Only for the purpose of being more helpful to you i ask you to describe the sound in more words here. Use your imagination to describe the sound...like an old lady singing or anything...
If its a chiming sound then its normal. I got that at 4k and it went to 8k after some run in. Now its to be found at 5k. The charachter of your engine will go on changing untill 5000 kms. After that the sound starts to settle in.
Again, Relax...these bikes are built to last a lifetime. Nothings wrong with ur bike...just describe that sound more though so that ppl can help u with it.

Tank releasing gases is as loud as a fckuin tea pot on my Ninja. Somehow I love it lol..

P.S. invincible..what gear are you in when you are at 9k rpm ? Theres no right gear you should be in at any rpm..so just a guess would do.

All that applies if u r under 5k kms. I am making that assumption

                  • @tenhut: The sound between 8000-9000 rpm is more like a chatter..it is not a chiming sound. I used to get the same chatter when the piston of my 7 year old suzuki shogun was screwed up years ago....may be i'm paranoid. So apart from the normal engine vroom when you pull the bike i get this chatter which more like banging a hammer very quickly between to steel plates which starts exactly starts @ 8000 rpm both in 2nd & 3rd gear & stops as you cross 9000 rpm. Now, if i keep the bike between 8000 & 9000 rpm lets say hovering @ 8500 rpm the sound is constantly there. I've tried this atleast 15 odd times before calling Santosh Achawith the bajaj senior service manager in pune. So lets see what it is .. i will hopefully know on friday & yea i dont think its the tank releasing gases since i get the sound each time between 8k & 9k rpm. Let me know what you think. Thanks - Karan.

I think you have a fairly good idea of whats going on. Judging by the description given by you contacting the service manager was the best thing to do.

Well! I am not an expert but still an input from my side-
I guess its not an engine issue, but some vibrations issue, simply because its happening at a specific rpm range, and that too, not in all gears.. Somewhere some part may be loosely fitted and is reaching its natural vibration mode, at that specific rpm range. I would again try to pin point the exact location from where the sound is coming.
