Mine is corroded and broken too. luckily the battery is still a tight fit due to the side cover pressing the fuse holder tightly against the battery. Since the strap fits to the frame with screws, i'll have to get an exact replacement from the svc. If it was a simple rubber strap, any kind of jugaad would have worked.

raccoon, in another thread, had mentioned about the sealed amaron batteries to be very good. i guess when this battery dies, that's the obvious replacement. atleast our rtrs use a standard 9aH battery unlike the cbz, etc HHs with the 6/7/8 aH wierdness.
You guys should take this up with TVS to get the damaged parts replaced. I have brought this up with Hero Honda and they have agreed to replace the parts damaged because of the Amco battery.

In my Shogun, the Exide also leaked and corroded Metal around it. And it would ALWAYS eat up the rubber strap first, that held it in place. And replacing the strap was a big headache as you need to open a lot of things and took lot of time. The TVS ASC would cooly say I'd need to leave the bike for a day, just to replace the strap!

And this acid belching behaviour is not unique to my bike... many others with these batteries have faced the same issue. Thats why Exide and Amco are amongst my most hated brands.

Have mentioned this somewhere else - besides Amaron and BOSCH, Base Terminal is also is pretty good & cheaper. It has been sitting in my Shogun for around 8 months now, without even a whiff of leakage... not even traces of gas! No change in electrolyte level either... so no need to top up for a pretty long time. Just make sure the electrolyte is not above the MAX level when you buy the battery. And no, you can't just drain off the excess, once it has been put in!

I'm sure that's the problem. The level is a little above max. Dunno if the idiots put it during one of the 'free' services or it came that way when i bought it. Either way too late. And i can probably convince the svc to replace my strap, not that it's gonna cost too much anyway, but i doubt anything can be done about the wiring connector housings, which have much more serious damace, because the wiring is part of a complete harness AND tvs warranty does not cover 'electrical wiring'.

p.s. btw, i completely forgot about the battery warranty card when and after buying the bike, and the other day when i was cleaning up the bike, fixing the acid damage, etc. i see the warranty card taped to the back of the battery and conveniently completely destroyed by the acid too. So there goes my battery warranty! not that i would want another leaky battery in my bike again.

        • Well, don't be too hard on yourself, because those batteries leak even if you keep the level upto MAX... LOL! My Base Terminal does not leak even though its level is above MAX. I had to buy the battery even though it was above MAX because I needed the battery immediately and also I was in the part of the city where the BT dealer is. Else would have insisted on a fresh battery being prepared the right way, which takes a day.

Remember to regularly dab petroleum jelly on the battery terminals and exposed part of the connector. Best to use petroleum jelly made by some small scale manufacturer. Vaseline is too thin, less effective for this purpose and more expensive.

As for the warranty, though it may not be explicity covered by the warranty, you can still try escalating the issue with at least the regional office. If a company is customer friendly, it will not get into legal technicalities for a genuine problem. And TVS is generally more responsive and customer friendly than Hero Honda and some other companies.

Same about the battery - they know that the warranty for OEM battery begins from the date of sale of the bike. So that part is not in question, even if you dont have the card. Just give it a try if you want it changed. Can't hurt to try.

And really, a customer should always demand the above. Things will improve only if you make them take responsibility and replace defective stuff. If nobody bothers, nor demands, they have no incentive to change... they may not even get to know that there is a quality problem with their stuff!!

          • Water clogging in fuel tank

            Hi All,

I've a Sep '07 RTR 160. A few days ago, I noticed water clogged above the fuel tank when I opened the fuel tank cap. The rubber gasket surrounding the tank cap is worn out. I inquired in TVS SVC but they said the rubber gasket is not available separately for sale. However, the head mechanic told me there is a hole which drains out the water if it seeps in and maybe the hole or the pipe through which the water drains is clogged. I tried to find it but couldn't. Can anyone of you help me locate it ???

Had a 470km ride yesterday. Throughout the ride did frequent speeding above 110kmph, went through very bad roads(as bad as off-roading), rode to high altitudes. Bike behaved beautifully in all departments After the day's hard ride got a mileage of 40kmpl too

Just remove the tank. U will find a rubber pipe of approx 10mm dia below it.

                          • it's not a 'leakage' as such....
slight deposit like this is normal in RTR and you'll find the same around the 'head' too....
