  • I've seen clutches last almost a lakh km with no degradation in function. Changing any part in a motor vehicle should be when that part ceases to function adequately. It could be a 100km or 100000000.

My personal experience with forks is to not touch it until it starts to give trouble. I.e. not operate smoothly or leak oil. Fork seals bed into the stanchions, and once set they usually don't require maintenance unless they're leaking. It's best not to touch a properly bedded in fork seal. The best kind of forks are ones that have drain screws at the bottom of the tubes (like on the rd350) this way you can drain out the oil and refill with fresh oil without touching the seals.

The best maintenance any person can do for their forks is to keep them clean. Dust and dirt trap moisture and cause pitting of the stanchions which will eat up seals and cause leaks. So whether the fork has a dust cover or not, keeping them clean is always beneficial.

      +1 for bolds.
RTR is the first with i've not experienced any fork issues till 9200kms, pther wise with both KB100 and Fiero, they had fork issues before 4000kms.
Oiling or putting the "vaseline" in the forks is the best way to Fu%k the seals.
and drain screw forks are the first i heard and i never knew RD had them.

If you think about it, this makes sense really. Though forks may not have as much crap running through the internals like an engine, oil does have a limited life. The molecular strings eventually break down and the oil loses its lubricating properties. So fork oils too will stop functioning optimally sometime. And i guess if TVS recommends changing the fork oil every 18k kms, it's probably not just to sell 300ml of fork oil. In short, following the maintenance schedule given in the manual should provide years of trouble-free performance.

Btw, when installing new seals, a light coat of fork oil is recommended on the inner surface so that the stanchions can slide in smoothly. Vaseline is probably a bad idea.

This is OT but the RD was advanced far ahead of it's time. Even though escorts messed it up to reduce costs and fuel comsumption, things like the disc brake were replaced by a twin-leading drum brake which had better performance than some crappy discs we've seen on indian bikes.

        • I changed the fork oil at the prescribed 10k kms for my Pulsar. Motul Fork Oil was used. The old fork oil had some minute metal particles in it.

The upside : I could immediately feel the change in the ride. The forks dived in and out very smoothly, in a never before fashion.

The downside : After a few kms of riding , one of the fork oil seals went bust. I promptly replaced it. No problem whatsoever from then on.
When everything comes ur way, u r in the wrong way ;)

            • Reading this stuff about periodic fork oil replacement, I'm now wondering what about the R15? Nothing is mentioned about the fork oil at all in the manual!

I too never bothered to change the fork oil in my FIERO and KB100, i used to do that when the seals used to go.

                • fork oil

Today i replaced fork oil with new one (any idea what kinda oil is use for fork..?) and did some 50-60kms ka small test run Bike felt lil more stable on Strainght Run and it(Front end) was super stable on corners even u can feel difference on hardcore braking So result is .

                  + Straight line stability
                  + On corner stability
And am very much satisfied with this oil change . But am still very much confuse about Do i need to replace clutch plates or not as there is nothing wrong with pickup/average/top speed... Bike goes easily up to 123-124kmph @ around 8.5K-9K

Its not enough to know how to twist the throttle; you must have judgement to know when and where to do it.

If the bike is not moving as per the throttle input is given, i.e, it's taking time like revving first and then moving, that indicates a worn out plates, if the signs are not like this, no need to replace them.

Exactly. This is a sign of the clutch slipping. Other symptoms could be a sticky clutch, not releasing smoothly or in jerks. If everything's fine don't bother just because it's run many 1000 kms.
