  • Meanwhile, I am experiencing a very slight-just audible intermittent pinging at a particular low rpm. This pinging occurs in 1st, 2nd and rarely the 3rd gear when I vary the throttle(small opening), when I am stuck up behind some some slow moving vehicle. I am not lugging the engine as my speedo shows almost 30-40 in 2nd when this momentary pinging occurs. I first suspected a lean pilot jet as the ping occurs between 1/8th to 1/4th throttle and richened the pilot and set idle correspondingly. Didn't work. Next culprit could be timing. So, I retarded it by increasing the plug gap only to have a sluggish low rpm response but the pinging remained albeit at a higher frequency than before. This is the only way by which timing can be varied by a layman like me on the TCI ignition(factory set-and-forget unit). So, a timing issue is not too probable. Now I am looking at a plug issue or the fuel. I use Shell Super Unleaded. So bad fuel very unlikely but not impossible. This tank up, I will switch to Speed93. I am buying a Mico and an NGK Iridium tomorrow. Hopefully the plugs/fuel or plugs+fuel should solve the issue over the weekend. If it still persists, a worn out pilot jet/carb slide problem could be the culprit. Lastly, I am looking at the entire TCI module/valves. Could valves be a cause, especially for low rpm intermittent ping? Someone please chip in. I am not going to the A.S.S. for this as they wouldn't be able to do much since the pinging occurs very intermittently and only with a hot engine.

    2Write,

Did you change just the valves or the valve springs, valve guides etc? 1300 sounds expensive. I just spoke to Shobha Automobiles, JC Road a few days back and he quoted 380 for a pair of OEM valves and 780 for OEM rockers.

    • Changed the valve.

Also at RE Workshops the Labour charge is high and RE Parts are not the same price as OEM parts plus VAT and the oil required.

      • I got an NGK BR9ES. This is one of the coldest plug in the NGK range and is OEM for the LB500. There is a notable increase in the smoothness of the engine now, especially at my cruising speed of 90 Ks.

Even, with the newer plug the slight, intermittent ping/knock continues. For now, I am running speed 93. There is no ping till the engine get's hot, which typically is about 10 Km of running. Tonight the plug will go under my magnifying glass for any signs of spotting or al deposits on the electrode. If the plug shows deposits, I can confirm that it is pinging indeed and I'l have to do something soon. As of now, I have ruled out the timing. Either it is the octane level or worse a malfunctioning carb. I will try some speed 97 octane first to check for the octane issue. Meanwhile, will my engine have too much carbon in just 5000 Ks of running. My spark plug doesn't indicate a very rich mixture, just a light ring of soot. Also, I couldn't find larger jets for the BS29 in JC road.

The plug shows almost no Al deposits or splotches of black on the elecrode which is a good thing. I was relieved to see that. So, I am thinking that it is pinging, but only a a very mild one. The heat mark on the plug shows an almost perfect timing, just a little above the apex of the side electrode. So I'm ruling out ping due to excessive advance. Coming to the octane issue, today I tanked up on Speed 97 from one of the most trusted bunks in Bangalore, G.B.S. Reddi and sons, Sheshadripuram. And surprisingly, no change in pinging. Same mild rattle under partial-low throttle openings, happens both in singles and doubles. So, I am ruling out the octane issue. Now, I am zeroing on the blocked pilot jet/carb problem theory. I've ordered pilot and main jets from CMW, US and now I'm waiting for it to arrive here. BTW, on Friday, I'm sitting with my mech and pestering him to take the carb apart and see whether it is playing truant. Wish me luck.

        • I have a question?
When i was just a baby, my father owned a "Mini Bullet". I have no idea what it was and my father doesn't remember too much about it as he sold it off some twenty years back .
Can someone shed some light on this?
          He thinks it was 200cc

              HELLO ALL,
I AM NEW TO THIS THREAD .AND GLAD I AM.
i own a 99's Taurus and Standard (a 15 days old ).I am planning to change the handle bar to more straighter and wont mind even if its shorter bar . please suggest which one to opt for and your experience with them ,if any.

I may also go for a change in the back tyre for a big daddy tyres . Is it ok to go for it without changing the wheel? if so which one will be the best .
i read in one of the msg in this thread , if i can remember properly, that one of the bullet lover has changed his original tyre to a 4.25x18 Moto C tyre by MRF . It looks fantastic for his bike ,but still i would like to hear from all of the experienced thumpers ,which to select and if selected the change in the performance of the bike.
Like wise , i would welcome any suggestions for number plate butification.

              DHAK DHAK ..
My heart beat..its my Bull's thump..

              • Samrat Clutch

Any one tried the Samrat clutch with the rubber inserts? I am aware of Royal enfields supplying similar ones as OE in the 50's especially on the twins and was surprised to see Samrat ones available in Delhi. Got one fitted to my bike and trust me it is wonderful. Just removes all the jerk at low speeds and the power delivery is very smooth.

I dont know about the life of this clutch and hence wanted to know if anyone else has fitted them.

                      • Guys, My RPM meter stopped working and at times its getting idled up at 2k rpm and stays there, No increase / decrease even after opening the throttle. And rarely the rpm meter kicks off automatically

there is no problem with the battery, with the horns / indicators working perfectly but the Neutral light behaving like the rpm meter, working when ever it wishes

                        What should i do ....?

                        • Ananth,

The leads of the tach may have come loose due to the vibes. Same case with the neutral light indicator. Take your tbts to the A.S.S.

                          Zoranamo,

The Taurus takes a lifetime to get up to speed. A larger rear tyre will only slow your down further. Same case with the standard. More rolling resistance will reduce mileage too.

The 4.25-18 Moto C isn't exactly suited for on road application though you can get by. Top speed also will go down as the tyre is smaller. If you are doing a lot of off roading/kuccha road riding, the Moto-c is a good bet.

Took the ride to the service center, they just booked my bike and asked me to come on monday to check the bike...

                            • I threw out the oem valves/guides and got kibblewhite valves&guides for my LB500. This cured the mild ping/valve clatter. Last time around, the RE brand store did a shoddy job of changing my valve guides under warranty. This time, I gave the RE Brand store the miss and risked the warranty and went to my mech Mubarak who did the job done mighty well. The valve guides weren't seated well and this caused the intake valve to partially seize. Now my bull is hitting 120 easy even with a pillion aboard. This, with a slightly loose exhaust tappet = slightly more vibey. I will tighten the tappets after another 200-250 clicks. I also got a larger pilot(20) and a larger main jet(125) from RoyalEnfield, USA and an NGK Iridium(BPR9EIX). Now the mid range is stonking with a sexy kick at the top end. Next up is a Shakeel goldie next month to maximise the jetting gains. I threw the PAV out and I am contemplating removing the entire ES assembly for a cleaner look and bullet-proof reliability.
