    • Just saw a tweet from motomatters.com that Sachsenring might be hosting its last GP and might not be on the calendar from 2012.

I guess you were referring to this photo in particular?

More to do with slipstreaming than the top speed of the bike.
Also wondering if this can be related to the hot topic going on in motogp, the lighter rider vs the heavier one? The heavier rider won though

Sumit ... the link is just their to highlight as How CF-Frames have faired so far in the Different Classes of MotoGP until date. Further, I only have experience with Le-Man / Supercars & SAE-Formula race cars with CF. With Motorcycle Frame its a different ball game. The main focus in a race Motorcycle Frame had always been to get the maximum load concentration at the steering pivot which needs to absorb all the loads and as well exhibit some degree of flex to provide the required feed back to the rider. Look at the Pivot size & Load Bearing designs of the Modern Motorcycles against Old ones.

CF is more uni-directional in load applications unlike Metal ... kind of Concrete can take up huge Compression load but not that good with Tensile. It's the various layout of the honeycomb structure combined with the Carbon Mat layout plus pressure and backing time in the vacuum Auto-Clay that brings a huge variation in the final finished product.

It's far more easy with Metallurgy as the Industry has an huge understanding about it. Say a same material made out of SAE1008, SAE1010, SAE1023 Steel and so on can exhibit different characteristic properties with everything remaining the same. Even sometime for certain applications, after having all the necessary Metal inserts required for the application in a CF output does not save that much weight as regular Metal one. That`s why in F-1 some use Carbon Fiber Gear Cases and others Metal.

Further based on Engineering datas, properties and assumption its difficult to simulate and get accurate readings using CAE for CF unlike Metals. Further it`s far more time consuming and very expensive to make it in the first place and difficult to mend repair unlike Metals. Further Metals can be easily X-rayed for defects unlike CF. Even the Mighty Boeing has difficulties in perfecting their CF Composite Dream Liners.

                      Cheers - TZ750.

                        • Furusawa retirement influenced by Valentino Rossi's Ducati move - | Motorcycle Sport | MotoGP News | MotoGP Results | MCN

Yamaha boss Masao Furusawa has admitted he'd have delayed his retirement had Valentino Rossi not quit and joined Ducati in 2011.

Furusawa played a fundamental role in the most successful period in Yamaha's history, completely revamping the race department at the end of 2003 ahead of Rossi's arrival.

Rossi went onto win four world titles while Jorge Lorenzo continued the Japanese factory's domination of MotoGP last year.

But Furusawa retired last month and Rossi himself said one of the main reasons he left Yamaha to join Ducati was because of Furusawa's departure.

Furusawa told MCN Rossi's departure played a key role in his decision to step down, confirming that senior Yamaha management had tried to persuade him to stay.

He said: "I really wanted to ask Valentino to stop with us and be an ambassador of Yamaha for the future but he changed his mind. MotoGP is so much fun for him but I'd already decided to stop. If Valentino had decided to stay with Yamaha I would have maybe carried on for another two years. But once he decided to go to Ducati, I decided immediately I was going to stop. I had some requests from the President of Yamaha to continue but I need time to enjoy my life. I will have a position inside of Yamaha for one more year as an advisor."

                          • @TZ750: Thanks for the analysis I am no guru in this field but from what you said it looks like technology has still not evolved to make the CF chassis work as well as the metal ones, though CF have the weight advantage.
Still a long way to go...
