But the real question is -- would he had taken that kind of risk, had he been fighting for the championship? No way.
Coming to analyze the Rossi-Lorenzo duet (rather than duel), it's not so sure that Lorenzo would have made it ahead of Rossi at the end of his first lap on slick tires, had he completed it. Those calculating the 10- seconds advantage of riders on slicks overlook the fact that Lorenzo had been starting from the pits. That advantage would have become effective in the next lap, so Rossi could have entered the track still ahead of him. That position wouldn't have lasted, probably, since Rossi was still on cold tires, but gives you the idea that they were indeed very close. Lorenzo was 6th when he crashed; he would not have finished better than 5th, as Rossi did taking his place.
Rossi had already achieved what he wanted by inducing JLo to stay with him for 2 laps rather than entering the pits with Marquez: whatever points Lorenzo would have taken after those 2 extra laps, would not have made a big difference because the podium was lost fro both of them at that point. Rossi would have been happy to concede just a couple of points, -- Lorenzo gifted him the full bounty.
There are still plenty of points up for grabs and anything could still happen, but this is an excellent championship. Let the Best win.
