I checked in a few IOC and BP bunks and none of the attendants knew what octane rating was being sold. They looked at me like i was from another planet. The owner/manager at these bunks said 87 octane.

I always tankup on shell premium. Not worth taking a risk at other bunks with so much adulteration and pilfering that happens.

The 'normal' petrol around available at most bunks is 87 octane.

Both shell normal and premium are 91 octane.

                      • Guys planning to tank up 91 octane vs 87 octane think twice. 91 octane is low on combustion & is useful on high compression vehicles such as Ninja. Though the CR is 10.7 for C250R, its better to check the owner's manual as what fuel is recommended or get a reliable answer from a knowledgable (or HMSI trained for C250R) technician.

Using a high octane on low compression engines will cause undesirable results, unless someone wants to bash HMSI for supplying bad engines.

                        • Called up Saphire Honda, and they too say that they'll be getting the bike around 15th April. Deliveries will take 1-2 days more as they need to do the registrations from RTO. Regarding the price, he said he'll give me a call on or before 5th April.

                          And hence, the wait continues...................

We saw the sticker on C250R tank saying 91 Octane! So that means company is recommending that.

EDIT: This is my CBR"250"Rth post!

Guys, is Shell the only company giving 91 octane fuel? And pardon my ignorance, but could anyone of you highlighten the difference in the fuel types, and also the possible outcome of filling 87 octane in CBR?
If I remember correctly, ajay(R1 Paper Cut Dream) had posted one thread about various 91Octane fuel centres in bangalore/India. Does that thread still exist, I am unable to find it now.

Shell fuels are 91 octane. Regular Shell unleaded is 91 octane while Shell Premium is 91 octane with additives.

Filling in lower octane fuels will cause knocking and detonation which is very bad for the engine. The engine internals such as valves, piston etc. will get damaged in the long run so avoid filling fuel of a lower octane rating than what is recommended in the manual.

I once filled premium fuel from a BP bunk which is 87 octane with additives (was told its 91 octane) and at another time filled regular 87 octane too. Just these 2 occasions as i had no other option. My bike did not complain by way of knocking but i wouldnt take a risk. Normally the ECU will retard the timing in case fuel quality is bad and it will adjust for optimum performance with that fuel but again not recommended unless you have no alternatives.
