  • It would be wrong to compare Pulsar's 15ps engine with KTM's 15ps engine. Obviously pulsar's engine is not as technically sound as that of KTM's. Also, KTM with lighter weight should be generating more power at rear wheel which matters most. The top end of KTM 125 may not be high considering it's a naked bike but it would be right there challenging all 150cc bikes in India except only R15. Light weight, much better chassis than all Indian bikes (again excluding R15), much better suspension, this bike should be extremely inspiring and fun. With a 200cc version, things can only get better

    • Of course the KTM will be more fun. But at the end of the day, top speed is basically about how much power the engine is putting down on the tarmac.
Your biking tells a lot about the person you are!

Topspeed doesnt depend alone on power,
Aerodynamics play a major part(if we are talking about these on road not on dyno)

Anyway, thanks for reminding me, though it does little to clear my curiosity that how can a 15PS engine deliver such low top end, unless it has a very meaty torque curve, shorter gear ratios and high final drive ratio......all aimed at one thing, massive acceleration.

I however assume the Duke 200 would be differently configured.
Who said 125 duke's top speed is 100 kmph?? it's zma quick.. i.e. top speed is 125kmph, but in Europe due to laws over there it's limited electronically to 65mph. Just to give some perspective.. P135LS, producing 13.5 bhp is capable of doing 112kmph, while weighing 122kgs.. 125 duke is even lighter at 118 kgs and producess 15ps!!

          • For the kind of initial kicks that he KTM125 gives (wheeling popping acceleration), it will be short geared, it will definitely not have a great top end.

Is the 125cc Duke a focused off-roader with more torquey output than usual ???

I am just pondering over the top speed of a 15PS bike !!!!
It cannot be 100mph(160kmph) for just a 15PS bike, so the possibility of typo error can be ruled out.But that doesn't mean that it would do only 100kmph !!!

Maybe it is a very different kind of bike.It reminds me of those torque friendly Enfields, which has big engines, high bhp but low top speeds.Only that the KTMs are way lighter.

An interesting bike anyway, would like to find the segment it targets or opens up !!
Let me clear your confusion... Since KTM 125 is made for the EU market which allows riders to ride any motorbike <15Ps / 125cc without any driving license whatsoever. Such riders though are not allowed to go over 65mph or 104kmph. Thats where the KTM 125 has been 'electronically limited'. Without the 'electronic limitation', I know an xBHP member who has taken the KTM 125 till 122kmph on the speedo (when he requested the bloke riding the test mule for a test ride). And according to him, the bike had some revs left in it to go faster.
Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

                    Slight correction.

A license IS Required. In most European countries to ride a 125 cc, < 15 Ps bike, either a "learners license" (which 15-16 yr olds can get) or a "4 wheeler license" is ok (a seperate 2 wheeler license is not needed).

Plus a 125 cc motorcycle enyoys huge insurance (which seems to cost a small fortune for cars and biggers bikes) benefits in those coutries

Therefore it is the 125 cc bikes which sell most in terms of volumes in countries like the U.K

Thanks for the correction . Even I looked at it long and hard before submitting because I was not quite sure what I was writing could actually be true

                          Now that sounds normal........

I was looking for this answer..........though had been to Europe but never ridden anything that goes so slow.

Hence for commuting purposes within city limits, the KTM125 is restricted.
Though Europeans use scooters and bi-cycles for commuting purposes most.

So my assumptions about the KTM200 to be a fast bike is true afterall.

From the pictures I see, the bike is well suited for small riders.

This bike seems to lack the big bike feel, but with its abilities would remind many, of the two-strokes like RX135 and Shogun, ie, enviable performance but trimmed
