In what is a startling discovery, several motorcycles from Triumph have apparently been detuned for the Indian market with a marginal dip in power and torque figures, when compared to the UK spec versions.

Re: All Triumph Motorcycles Sold in India are Detuned .. ?

    News Approved.

I was waiting from Triumph to reply to arrive at a more clear scenario. And this is what they had to say on their Facebook page:

Triumph Motorcycles India Private Limited would like to clarify that the earlier information on Triumph India website displayed the EU specifications, which was mentioned under the terms and conditions section of our website. The testing processes in India and UK are different, which leads to variations in the calculation of power output in PS. The specifications are now updated on the website and are as per the certification under the ARAI regulations.

Since our foray into the Indian market, all our CKD motorcycles in India have been registered as per the ARAI regulations and certifications and same is stated on our current website. Please note that specifications of all our motorcycles sold in India are of similar specifications which are sold elsewhere globally, with few minor variations to comply with Indian regulations.
We have also received some queries with regards to the Street Triple 675, Triumph Motorcycles. We would like to state that the motorcycles sold in India have always been the 85PS (79 PS as per ARAI Test Certificate) variant. We understand that some confusion has been caused to our esteemed customers in relation to the aforesaid. We request our customers to kindly allow us some time to review and revert on the same.

As a brand, Triumph Motorcycles India Private Limited values its customers and their satisfaction is of the utmost importance to us. We request our customers to directly contact the dealerships in their respective cities for any further assistance. The contact detail for each individual dealership is available on our website. Customers can also reach us at [email protected]

We will review each query independently and try our best to resolve in accordance with the brand guidelines and procedures.
All media queries should be directed to Mr. Siddhartha Varma at [email protected].
So, we're getting the international versions with a "few minor variations" to comply with the Indian regulations. ARAI's stand also needs to be heard, before we arrive at a conclusion. But you can safely assume you won't hear from them anytime soon on this issue.

(Matter removed after clarification by owners, about wrong claims made by Triumph)

Its wrong on Triumph's part that their dealers or company salesperson have sold this motorcycle (ST 675) claiming 106 PS (whether verbally or in writing). It is unfair towards the customers to be sold something by giving wrong information before the sale.

Paying almost double the money of a ER6n (because its a naked), they don't expect only a few extra (in single digits) horsepower. And the power isn't the big deal here, let me emphasize, the wrong information provided is the problem!

I can only perceive what the owners must be feeling now. They must be adequately compensated to satisfaction, is what my humble opinion is.

Even those owners who are not complaining, due to lack of information (those who're not much on internet, etc.), must also be compensated equally, because lack of information doesn't mean they're not cheated. They're equally eligible for a compensation of some kind.

Now, Triumph are on to damage control if they want a healthy presence here. Even if it means a "near to full" or full refund, they should go for it. Reputation once lost is lost forever.

Bangalore folks are taking Triumph to court?

Isn't there a law wherein a customer if unsatisfied with the product gets his complete moneyback within the time frame of its warranty? Even more strict in terms for FDI's like Amazon.in aswell as Triumph?

I request members to understand that our Fuel and Riding conditions are not exactly what we would call "Suitable" for imported motorcycles, specially the highly tuned ones from this decade.
Also, please understand that no company logically wants its customers to be deprived of the best experience. There's a reason for everything.

And also, every motorcycle has to pass ARAI's testing (except for CBUs).... So, do consider Triumph's point of view too.

Although, putting Euro specs on the Indian website would be ethically wrong, if proved so.
And this is what I have to say them:

Basic fact is that there is some difference between selling premium bikes and selling oranges.

As I write this a z 800 zipped past my street. I have appreciated that bike this moment more than the Street triple Parked in my parking. For that 47 Kgs extra on the Z my triple is stripped off by 26 HP!.

I was told my bike is 106PS. In fact it was 106PS till a week back. Dealer reassured the same.

Admitting the fault, apologizing is where you should restart.

Else Triumph Motorcycles India will always have its place in the Indian motorcycling history - A place of an arrogant, and untrustworthy motorcycle manufacturers.

Remember please that riders are probably the finest of humans. Deal them nicely. That is the least thing a motorcycle manufacturer should learn.

Sad that I have to say this to a British bike maker who have more than 100 years of history.

I agree with you bro. Being apologetic is from where the company should have begun in the first place after this fiasco. But it's sad, it began blaming the end users. Now whenever you see a z800 r others which u could have bought in place of triumph, u will obviously feel bad. It's like putting right money on the wrong product. Hard luck. to triumph.

But to say the truth, I still love street more than z800. I will do what it takes to bring my back to 105 or more. If I fail in that, I will get a green bike that can make me happy. But that bike will not be z800.

Well am not a sucker for z800 either, although I do agree that its a beautiful naked which I wouldn't mind owning some day. I was just trying to say that triumph india should have been more forthcoming with info regarding their products. All of us here love our respective rides and hence we are on xBhp.

I didn't mean anything like that bro. Just said that I still like my bike. Bike is fine. The manufacturer sucks.

Even z800 is a nice bike. Just that I prefer st3.

That was my point. If I am not getting what I paid for, I will probably buy a kawasaki.

Samarth, totally agree with you that the high performance engines may face challenges in Indian riding conditions, but, here the question is how ethical was for Triumph to hide this information till it was arguably forced to divulge it? Not a single person in any of dealership had an iota of idea about this detuned version, let alone the populace. Should they just be let off just because they had mentioned EU standard and not Indian standard? They did not intentionally try to hide this information till now? What about the customer who bought it thinking its power is at par with other bikes? Shouldn't they (Triumph) at least come up with an written apology instead of cleaning its hands off the whole fiasco terming it as Consumers fault to read the fine print? That's bad and they should deservedly be taken to court and made to stand trial.

I am surprised this took so long to have a thread here. There has been a thread on team-bhp for ages now!!
Actually triumph should have mentioned India specific figures. The bike sold here is a detuned version like that in Brazil, but they were very forthcoming in explaining that in Brazil before/during the launch. This is classic legerdemain!! You need to specify what you are selling here not what you are selling elsewhere. Did they mention the price in pound sterling ? No. Then why the figures as in UK ? All the test rid ebikes had arrow exhausts. Was it deliberate to give the bike the extra oomph to mask the emasculation ? I remember the duke 200 gettinga revised tuning lowering he 6th gear limiter and I was incensed. But this 'revision'(actually there was none, all the bikes sold were always 85/79 BHP) means you take one duke 200 from the ST. This is absolutely unforgivable. They should be taken to court.
This is the land where big corporates get away fooling , looting, killing the public. Let's not treat them as we did the East India Company. let them bleed.

Triumph is such a renowned brand that a detuned version would have sold anyways. But, by simply concealing this very fact they have let themselves down very much. Not that the owners would feel a 'huge' difference in performance(as they were riding the same bike before this confession), but some of them would definitely feel cheated. At least there should be some kind of complimentary compensation as a token IMO.

Marketing the bikes with EU specifications on brochure and social media is simply irresponsible of Triumph as a manufacturer. Though they might have saved themselves from any legal repercussion by mentioning the disclaimer in fine prints in brochure, it's simply not the right way to sell vehicles in the market. They have tried to do the damage control by updating the specs on website and releasing an official statement but how satisfactory it is for an existing Triumph owners, is argumentative.

From what I understand, Triumph had plans to bring in Street Triple R since a long time(coming in 2015). The R will supposedly have the actual 106PS engine(which will be detuned by some 5-6 PS). The non R is the 85PS sold in Brazil with slightly different engine components, which is further detuned here to 79PS. That was the main reason why we saw the huge price difference between the Street and the Daytona.
Needless to say, I'm appalled to see them trying to put the blame on the customers for trusting them.
Our so called expert reviewers should do proper dyno tests and present the figures from the dyno tests like the foreign magazines instead of just going wow, wow, wow all over the 'reviews' which just look like advertisements for the manufacturers.
