  • Hey Aditya, let's ride out sometime, man! Am going to Amby or somewhere similarly close by on Saturday morning. Lemme know if you wanna join in. Will be getting the Husky if you come, else the RD. Going with another rider who will be on a P220.

The old R1 engines always have a heating problem in city traffic. Don't worry about it too much. A lot of owners bypass the fan switch and make it manual. That seems to help a bit.

As for the clutch, it might be a non-hydraulic unit. The Husky has a heavy clutch too. You trade a bit of comfort for a lot more feel. You'll get used to it.
Who needs more than 70 bhp when you don't need to slow down for the corners?

The clutch is not a problem but the throttle is; it's like an on-off switch. I'm fitting a PC-V tomorrow, lets see if that helps. Else there's a mod called TRE or TRC which resolves the throttle problem.
PC-V with yoshi map being installed as I write.
On Monday I'm fixing a modified airbox, BMC air filter, modified butterflies, Fuel Cut Eliminator (FCE, to sort the on/off throttle response) and clip-ons (if they fit). Also will be gutting the primary cats in the mid/head pipe. Later if the need arises I'll fit an Ignition Module (IM).

Apparently all these mods with the correct map put out close to 150 bhp at the wheel. It also makes the bike super responsive at low and mid range.

I'll post the results of my experiment.

      • I am not sure, but I think gutting the cat is not a good idea. I read up online somewhere that the only thing it does is to cause turbulence in the exhaust flow and therefore cause greater resistance to the flow instead of the opposite. If possible, remove that section and completely replace with a straight pipe. That might be hard though because for BS-IV onward engines, they've moved the cat much closer to the engine so that it heats up faster.

In fact I've read the opposite, this is from Ivan who's a master tuner of the FZ1:

          -----------------------------------
Gutting the cat in the headers, is this really all that helpful?

Appx 8 hp across most of the midrange (3800 rpm - 9000 rpm) It's removal allows the pipe to resonate and scavenge the cylinders causing better trapping efficiency.
          --------------------------------------

Obviously I'll need an appropriate map for it.

Of course a new straight through header system would be better but that's over $500 plus shipping and duties. Unless I get one fabricated here I'm not looking to spend too much on the bike as I may not keep it for more than 3-4 months.

Earlier this year is when the thought started (after selling my pulsar 200) that I need to have a bike which is a bit more on the CC, I really didn't know which one though (thanks to all the showrooms who never give you a test ride for SBKs).

            1: Convince my wife
Was pretty easy as my beautiful lady never goes hard on me and I got the permission early on

            2: Which bike to buy
Honestly I was clueless here, so started talking to friends and researching on net. It took quite a lot of time to come to a conclusion that which bike I need to go for - and the decision was Ducati Monster 796!!

I went to Ducati Bangalore showroom and booked the white one with a promise that they will deliver the same in 2 months time.

            3: Twist 1
3 months over and there was no signs of getting the bike and more over got to know Ducati Bangalore dealer is totally screwed up (bare my language please) with their promise. Their promise date seems like a moving target (well I'm not getting into details as there is another thread which is talking about their issues in detail)

            4: Twist 2
I happen to travel to US (for official purpose) and my friend there gave me a chance to ride his FZ1!! I swear to God, back of my mind I thanked Ducati dealer for the first time. This was the bike I really needed, I fell in love with the 4 inline from the very moment. I spoke to Bangalore Yamaha dealer from US itself and did the booking.

5: Saw the bike coming out from her cage!
I don't know how that feeling is, but something similar happened when I saw my baby boy few years back for the first time!!

            6: My first real ride
Well not to add much +100 for what Niks has written

Here goes few iPhone pics, I will post some good ones sooner.

            Huge Congos Prashanth..enjoy the beast

Good to know you have an FZ1 man, you're doing well in life

So all fueling and intake mods done and the bike is transformed. It runs like a dream. Pulls like a twin from 3k onwards and screams like an inline high up. It's mind boggling what a difference these mods made. For anyone interested, this is the list of mods:
                1: FCE
2: Modded airbox with BMC filter
3: Cat in header gutted out
                4: New secondary butterflies
                5: Velocity stacks
                6: Yoshi TRC slip-on
7: PC-V with the correct map (though I still need to put the final map on)
To do may be later: Dynojet's Ignition Module.
(apparently with all these mods and the correct map it puts out 150 bhp at the rear wheel).

Other things put on the bike are: Frame, axle and fork sliders, rizoma rearsets, puig levers, bellypan & the wheels have been painted gold (I may switch back to black.

I'm awaiting a compwerkes LTD tailtidy, steering damper and 16/48 sprocks with a new chain. I've got Tomaselli clip ons which I'm trying to figure out how to install.

I love this bike, I wasn't sure if this is the bike for me but I'm glad I took the plunge.

I sold the SF, waiting for a new one or the triumph speedie. In the interim period I got a HD which I hated so sold it in 2 months and then got an FZ1. All these mods are on the FZ.

The flies and fce are from Ivan's Performance Products You can get the IM and PC from him too. He will supply you a map then which is claimed to put out 150 at the rear. Velocity stack isn't needed but you can find one if you like. Airbox mod and gutting the cat is pretty straight forward and a very much needed mod for the performance gains. Lastly, a nice slip on or a full system, if you get the full system you don't need to gut the cat.

My bike came with yoshi, the PC-V is 21k from PRS, they have plenty of exhausts too for the fz. For the other parts contact Ivan.

If you don't like the burbling/popping sound after a slip on you can block of the AIS hose. I kept it as I liked it.

Sorry missed the rest of the points. Yes I had a yellow 48. Dunno how much is it stock at the rear; I've read from 118 to 120s. Frankly, even that much is a lot for our conditions but the stock fz1 is pretty dead in the low revs and has a very jerky throttle. Power kicks in really high up ion the range, like a sports bike which again for our conditions is silly. I don't want to ride around town at 10k rpm. These mods transform the bike completely.

Damn this net, it's really slow today. I'll post some pics later, need to click more in good light. I really want to get the clip ons installed, some pics of that too if I manage it.

Ah the cat is in the header, gutting THAT should help. I thought you were talking about the secondary cat in the muffler like it is in some cars... not sure if the FZ has that.

What is the stock sprocketing on the FZ? Also, you weren't happy with the stock steering damper?

The secondary cat goes away when you install slip ons. There is no need to gut as there is no cat in the yoshi.

17/45. It doesn't come with a steering damper.
